Beginners Luck...

I took my friend out for his first day of kayaking on Saturday. Not only was this his first day in a kayak, it was also his first time on Canyon Lake. If that were not enough, the conditions were literally "once in a life time". I can count on one hand how many boats we saw. I believe that many people decided not to go due to fear of the storms that were moving through the state. My gut feeling was that it was going to be perfect because the storm was basically on its way out and quickly loosing steam. It was exactly what I thought it would be. Dead calm, no boats, and really cool photography conditions with the sun peeking through the clouds off and on throughout the day. I love when subtle light mixed with shadows move across a hillside. Oh, did I forget to mention the Big Horn Sheep silhouetted against the skyline on a high cliff top overlooking the lake? Taking someone out for their first day kayaking with conditions like this is ridiculous. Talk about getting spoiled right from the start. I remember telling him later in the day to soak as much in as you can because it will likely only go down hill from here. What we experienced on Saturday was anything but typical. You usually have to go to Apache Lake to get conditions that good. I had to keep reminding myself that this was Canyon Lake. This is the same lake that is complete chaos in the summer. Paddling up through the initial narrow channel heading up lake in the summer will scare the @#%# out of a first-timer. Large continuous boat waves slam against the canyon walls and bounce back and forth all day, creating rogue peaking waves that come at you from all sides simultaneously. It is an interesting and unsettling feeling to say the least when you're only sitting about three feet above the water.

Saturday was really special. I think I had as much fun as he did. I have been solo kayaking for the last ten years. Being able to easily talk to each other while paddling along the lake is really cool. I loved watching his boat skim across the calm water along side of mine. It was a great day. I can only hope that all of our future trips are this good...
