Found a large rock resembling a skull off the side of the road that was pretty sweet. We camped out near the top of the canyon. I think you could make it to the top of the canyon in a high clearance vehicle with offroad tires, but you may be more comfortable with 4x4.
The next day we headed down to horse tanks and gray tanks and hiked around checking out the sights. Then up to Kofa and North Star mines. Kofa mine is private property and they're pretty serious about you staying out. Any HC vehicle could easily make it to Kofa mine. Looks of exposed camp sites in King Valley. After exploring the Kofa mine area we headed up Engesser Pass trail which was beautiful and fun to drive, but I would not chance it without 4x4. A few good camping sites were here and there along the road. We set up camp just pass the Hoodoo wash junction. That night we were visited by a brave little kit fox.
It rained on and off all night and by morning things were pretty wet. He headed out about 7 in the morning and made it to Vicksburg road around 9, gassed up and headed home. This area doesn't seem to see much use so you probably will be alone other than the snow birds visiting Palm Canyon from Quartzsite. It's quite beautiful out there and there's a ton to explore, just make sure you have a capable vehicle! |
