My GF and I had been wanting to do this for a while. Then My friend and his wife showed some interests so we called and made the reservations. This all took place in April, but our trip was planned for sept. that gave us plenty of time to gather the stuff we needed.
Thurs - we met our friends in Seligman, they were driving down from Utah. We had a nice meal and a good nights sleep in the Romney Motel. We were in our cars and headed to the trailhead at 4:15 am.
Fri - Had our packs on our backs and our feet hitting the ground at 6am. wanted to get an early start. the hike was great. We hit the village and 3.5 hours. visited the store, and had breakfast at the cafe. Also noticed a long line of people waiting for the helicopter. Left the village, saw the new navajo falls area. then Havasu falls, then arrived in the camp ground. Found a nice spot and half way down and set up camp next to the creek. We rested a bit and then headed back to Havasu falls to play around for the afternoon.
Sat - Woke up, dehydrated eggs and bacon. Headed off to hike down to Mooney. What a great climb down. Explored around a bit. Never found Beaver. Climbed out and back to camp. Rest, and then back to Havasu falls for some swimming around a bit. We really enjoyed Havasu Falls. Hit the sack early this night.
Sun - set our alarms early, we were packed up and hiking out at 4 am. We wanted to get ouut before the Sun was too far up. Hiking in the dark was cool. Also, one of the random dogs adopted us. when we were packing up the dog came over and laid down. The dog hiked out with us. He actually helped us out a few times. In the canyon area we missed the trail a few times as it would go up one side of the canyon then the other. turned out to be a good thing this dog. We gave him water a few times, wish we had some food at that time for him, but we were down to 2 cliff bars. About the half way point we ran across about 5-6 tents set up in the canyon. Seems a group made it half way and I guess decided to wait until day break to finish things up. THe dog laid down in the middle of their camp and thats where we parted ways, he was a good dog. We also saw a fox in the canyon. The sun was just coming up the last few miles, but we lucked out, it was overcast and the clouds did a good job for us that day. Made it to the parking lot in 4 hrs 40 mins, I was happy with that. Stopped in Seligman for some doughnuts and chocolate milk at the gas station, then made our way back to Phoenix. Still got to watch the Cardinals game!
This hike was great. We all really enjoyed it. I do wish we would have made it back to the new Navajo area as I now hear its a great swimming hole. I guess that gives me a reason to go back right? |
