After we hiked the short Running Eagle Falls Trail we headed to two Medicine Lake and the Aster Falls Trail. This trail heads along the south side of Two Medicine Lake and would eventually loop around the lake back to the start point. There are multiple trails emanating from this trail that will take you up to the ridgetops/saddles that surround this lake and to upper two Medicine Lake. Most of the upper end of these trails, especially on the north facing slopes still had quite a bit of snow. We took a short side trail to aster Falls on our return trip.

The Two Medicine Lake trail is in good condition although a bit muddy and snow covered in places. Fairly level walking as would be expected along a lake. We made it to Paradise Creek where the bridge was being repaired. There was no crossing this creek it was running really hard. A crew was working on the suspension bridge and we were told if we wait about an hour we would be able to cross. We headed back at this point.

On the return we took the short Aster Falls Trail, pretty good elevation gain for such a short trail. This is a north facing slope trail so the snow was considerable but manageable since it wasn't frozen (Temps were in the mid 50's in the afternoon). Once off the north facing slopes the trails were clear. Aster Falls is impressive and a short way after the falls a bit higher up is a viewpoint overlooking the Two Medicine Canyon, very impressive. There are many options at Two Medicine Lake for hiking from short to long hikes, low or high AEG Pick your poison.

This hike into scenic paradise is easy to follow, well maintained, with little elevation gain, and parallels the north shore of the "very" scenic Two Medicine Lake. The first .5ml provides wonderful views of the lake, as well as panoramic vistas of the dominant 9513' Rising Wolf Mtn. to the north. Just across the lake to your left is the much photographed 8271' Sinopah Mtn. with 8164' Appistoki Mtn to the south...all just a picture perfect setting!

The mighty "Twin Falls"..a very unique set of falls that is technically cascades, but that makes them no less impressive! Beautiful wildflowers reside at the base of these two side-by-side falls. This impressive falls is fed by major drainage's further up the Dawson Pass TR and from an upper lake called "No Name Lake" off this same trail.

After arriving in East Glacier Park,MT the day before, this hike was to be our first of nine full day outings planned in Glacier National Park. I was much looking forward to this "Two Medicine Section" hike having been earlier recommended by previous Montana resident and HAZ member-Crocodile Ryan.

It is worth repeating what I stated in the hike description "A day hike or backpack to this lake or beyond ranks among the finest in Glacier NP. This trail goes by beaver ponds, crosses several green, lush meadows, passes two waterfalls- Aster Falls and 4-level Rockwell Falls. Before the falls there is also a .4ml side trip to Paradise Point on Two Medicine Lake which is an outstanding viewpoint. Hikers may camp at beautiful Cobalt Lake known for its rich green of surrounding forests and meadows, the alternating bands of deep red and cobalt that run through the cliffs and the bright blue of the lake".

For this late June hike into Cobalt Lake(considered early season for GNP), we weren't able to view the bright blue of this lake, instead we saw a beautiful blue-iced lake at 6570' with a chance to sharpen our snow hiking skills for approximately 25% of this 12ml R/T hike. We also witnessed some of the most beautiful lush green forests, meadows, and active beaver ponds in this section of the park. With all the snow that Glacier had received this past winter season and now with the alpine snow melt in full force, beautiful Aspen and 4-level Rockwell Falls were just roaring. This hike into scenic paradise of Douglas fir and lodgepole pine also offered us many scenic cascading water flows down the numerous rocky cliffs as we hiked to and back from Cobalt Lake. This hike was also my first chance to put to good use the "go to" and "reverse route" compass options on my new Garmin GPS(when we were within ~1ml of the lake, the trail had pretty much disappeared under snow with little to no recent hiking activity to the lake). It worked and I was able to find our way there with only a little confusion getting us three back out again to the actual trail..I am still in learning mode! This dayhike was truly a wonderful introduction to GNP for us! :GB:
