This little gem most people probably have never heard of.
It's reminiscent of a miniature Wotan's Throne and it's out west on the South West side of Powell Plateau nearest to Wheeler and Dutton Points.

In fact King's Crest is immediately East of Dutton Canyon. And wow what a gorgeous Canyon it is!!

A group of us from all over AZ meet annually (last year 6 of us spent a day and a night out Pt Huitzil way) this year 9 of us met and camped at Swamp Point and headed out on an adventure.

Jamie and I planned to summit the crest from the rim. No beta is available, all we know is what Butchart made available in his papers. We found a "secret" route down from the rim and ended up using it as out exit route as we took a different drainage down to the Coconino rim and contoured to the crest from there.

As far as we can tell there are 5?! Different drainages that all "go". Have fun choosing the "right" one!

We made it to the crest but opted out of the summit due to incredibly warm temperatures...and the fact that our exploratory route was frustrating, thorny and oh did I mention HOT?! It's like flatiron in midjuly only at 8,000 feet!

Anyway, Powell Plateau is my new favorite place!

I'd not suggest the average hiker heading out to the crest. It's not as easy as it looks or sounds, and that's coming from this acrazy Canyon Freak so....yeah.

No water.
Southern exposure.
No path, trail, nor even a marked route.
Some extremely sexy Coconino tilting out there too.
For most folk this "hike" is not worth the drive out there, nor the time it takes to get to the Crest...now if you live here it's a whole different story! :)
