After my big hike I only gave myself 1 rest day. I really needed 2 days, and should have either come home to roast, or better yet gone to Utah for some R&R at Cedar Breaks, to come back to hike again, rested. Oh, well, live and learn. I planned on McFarland Peak, which is a solid interesting 10,700' summit. My legs were not having it, and by the time I made the Bonanza crest, uphill was painful. No way was I going to enjoy a 1000' gully scramble. I'm a little surprised I was as sore as I ended up being, as it wasn't a huge hike, but I think the steep slope had a lot to do with it. I'm not normally that sore after Kimball.

So, just past Divide Peak, I turned back and headed to the summit of Divide. It was enjoyable. Nice views of the Spring Mountain big boys.

Most of this is the lower Bristlecone Trail, and part of the Bonanza Trail. Those are nice, but fairly busy hikes. The bristlecone on the Bonanza is not as nice as the ones on the North Loop, but this area is probably drier, and more exposed, as well as lower. The Bristlecone trail is really mixed conifer, but there are some huge ponderosa pines.

I descended early and enjoyed diner at a picnic area in pinion pine, before a brief nap and a return drive to the valley oven where it was 117 today. Part of me wanted to go to Cedar Breaks, but the persistent Arizona Smoke was also in Utah, so maybe later this summer or more likely next year.

This is about as good as it's going to get here. Leaves beginning to brown and fall.

One last full pack training hike before our Thunder River / Deer Creek trip.
It was cool at elevation and the ground was still moist from recent rains. Even a few patches of snow on the north slope of the peak. About 1/2 the hike down with headlamps after a late start. Hiking in the dark is so much slower on an unfamiliar trail.

It's always fun to check out a trail you've never been on before, especially if it gets you well above the valley heat in August! :D

With this idea in mind, we drove over to the Cold Creek end of the Bonanza Trail, with a plan of hiking up to Bonanza Peak. The trailhead was easy to find, and we quickly prepared our packs and headed up the trail. This part of the trail consists mainly of switchbacks - 76 up to the point we left the trail, to be exact. But, the switchbacks are not steep, and almost the entire trail was shaded by trees. Near perfect conditions!

Broke off from the trail and headed along the ridgeline to Bonanza Peak. This is not a huge peak, but views were excellent in all directions and well worth the effort. Looks like a few people sign this peak register each day on weekends. Saw not a single other person on our Tuesday hike.
