This lollipop loop hike started out from the Blue Wash Trailhead on North Cave Creek Road then going down the wash to Camp Creek. On the return from the falls I followed a small side canyon going northeast to connect with the Maricopa Trail which then led me back to Camp Creek and Blue Wash to complete the loop portion of the hike. The trailhead parking lot was empty when I started at 8:30am except for 2 cars belonging to 4 hikers who followed me down the trail. When I returned at 12:30pm the lot was full with hordes of hikers heading to the Falls. It was a pleasantly cool day with threatening rain clouds to the north. I took my time enjoying being back in the desert foothills. There was very little water flowing over the falls and the creek dried up about 140 yds downstream from the Falls. The threatening rain clouds appeared overhead on my way back on the Maricopa Trail, so I stopped to put on a rain jacket and put the rain cover on my pack. I have found from past experience that these actions are usually successful in stopping the rain. After a few minor sprinkles, the rain clouds retracted back to the north and the sun came out.

A pretty quiet morning for a Sunday at the Blue Wash Trailhead. We were the first ones there and we only passed a handful of people on the hike out. The falls had a light flow and the temps were generally perfect. We made the popular loop option with the wash just before the falls and then took the Maricopa Trail back to Blue Wash, with a quick detour to a pile of rocks along the way. Most of the trail was flagged with blue flags at various turns and intersections to include the wash we hiked, they appeared to have been related to some type of bike race that occurred rather recently. There was also a little extra trash on the trail presumably from the race, but I am sure they will grab it when they pick up the flags.

I parked at the Camp Creek trailhead, hiked down to the Maricopa Trail. From there I went up a wash a short distance to find a geocache. I had to walk up the wash a bit farther to get up the side of the wash. From there, I tried to head downstream to get out, but didn't see an easy way down, so backtracked the way I came in.

My main objective was to head north on the Maricopa trail a ways to find two more geocaches. They're basically off the MT around the highpoint to Bronco Butte TH. Once I found the caches, I turned back.

I've never been on this section of the MT, so I've been looking forward to getting out here. There was more climbing than I expected, and the last part was fairly steep. I was moving pretty slow up there.

The day started out calm, but the wind was howling by the time I turned around. I had to catch my hat a couple of times. I was planning on stopping and having some Gatorade at the turnaround, but it was too windy, so I headed back down to where I found some shelter in a wash.

There were spots of Lupine and Poppies and some other flowers too. I haven't seen poppies yet this year, so that was nice.

It amazes me how many people visit Camp Creek Falls. The parking was mostly full when I arrived and there were still a lot of cars and a lot of people heading down on my way out.

I hiked along some trails in the area to find some geocaches. It was a loop out to a wash, down to Camp Creek, up a hill to some ruins, over to Camp Creek waterfall, and back up the Maricopa Trail to my start.

It was cold, windy, and overcast when I started. I put my wind-jacket on at the truck before starting. For a while, I wished I put my gloves on too.

I was planning on heading farther north on the Maricopa Trail, but the weather was looking pretty nasty, so I turned back down, then headed up a nearby hill and checked out the ruins. It started sprinkling a but while up top, so I didn't spend much time looking before heading down, then over to the Camp Creek Waterfall.

The waterfall is a popular spot and there were plenty of people there, even today. The water was flowing fairly well.

On my way out from the falls, it started raining fairly hard. I pulled my umbrella out and continued on. Shortly after reaching the Maricopa Trail, I put my pack's rain cover on. It rained most of the way back to my truck.

I've lived near Cave Creek my whole life and only learned about this spot recently thanks to HAZ. I waited until after a good winter rain because I wanted to see the falls really flowing. I was surprised just how easy the hike was, round trip was only 1.5 hours even with me carrying my baby in my arms the whole time--it's no wonder this is a popular hike. We saw about a dozen people and this was a weekday. The majority of our time was spent enjoying the waterfall itself. The entire hike is gorgeous and there were a lot of surprises for me. Even though most of the route is below 3k feet the scenery is more akin to higher elevations, for example there are lots of healthy junipers as well as scrub live oak, and obviously a semi-permanent waterfall is not something one expects this close to the Phoenix metro. I'm glad we waited until after a rainstorm, the weather was humid but cool and overcast making it perfect for hiking. Blue Wash had some trickles coming out of the rocks and Camp Creek was running with clear water down to the confluence with Blue Wash. Sadly there is a lot of invasive arundo donax reeds along Camp Creek, hopefully there's enough water to go around so that they don't dehydrate the native trees like the last spring I visited. Overall this spot is definitely a new favorite of mine and I will be doing it regularly. I got lots of great pictures of my baby and I'm sure when he's older he'll enjoy playing in the water.

Easy hike along an old OHV trail and sandy wash. Falls were running nicely. It seems there are a lot of people on spring break or visiting from out of town, so we had a lot of company. Worth it to put my feet in the water. When hiking out, keep a close eye out for the junction that takes you back onto the old OHV road. We easily missed it and then had to do the "advanced" hike back to the parking lot.

I started planning this day hike with FOTG. We would start at the Blue Wash TH and follow it to Camp Creek then follow the Maricopa Trail out to the vast expanse of foothills on the east side of that creek to do some off-trail exploring. By the time our planning was completed the day before departure, FOTG had added a couple more hiking partners in addition to Katie and their 2 dogs. The next day we gathered at the trailhead at 8:00am with only 3 other cars in the parking lot. Both the trail down Blue Wash and this section of the Maricopa trail have a good tread on reasonable grade so we made good time with the exception for stopping to take photos. We soon headed off-trail up to the top of a ridge which we explored at a leisurely pace before descending back to the Maricopa Trail for the return. The off-trail experience was pleasant with a minimum of prickly things blocking our route. Some evidence of ancient habitation may have been encountered.

We decided to follow the bottom of a dry wash back to Camp Creek with its confluence a short distance below Camp Creek Falls. The wash has a smooth sandy bottom with a trickle of water here -and-there which made for easy walking on a gradual descent besides offering an opportunity for the dogs to cool off and a scenic slot canyon section. I highly recommend making a lollypop loop hike encompassing the parallel section of the Maricopa Trail and the bottom of this wash. This provides both long distance scenic views of this area and the beauty of this small canyon bottom with a short detour to see Camp Creek Falls for a total distance of about 5 miles starting and ending at the Blue Wash TH.

When we reached Camp Creek we took a short detour upstream to look at the falls. The place was a real zoo with people and their kids and dogs all over the place on this sunny spring day. We took a few photos while John9L explored above the falls. He returned with the news that he had encountered a Diamondback rattlesnake. A warning that these critters are already out-and-about this early in the year (Feb 20). Returning to Blue Wash we started the slog uphill to the TH. The youngsters in the group (everyone except me) took off like horses returning to the barn while I maintained a "more measured" pace. It had been an enjoyable hike with good company and a chance to catch up with John9L who I hadn't seen since the Haunted Canyon HAZoween Hike in October, 2014. Also was a pleasure to meet Michelle, a friend of Katie's.

The Maricopa Trail is actually a deceptively nice stretch of trail for these parts. It’s a shame the last fire killed off so many saguaro, or it would have been even more scenic. We visited some rock piles in the area too and then made a stop at the Camp Creek water park and day care on our way out. Good day overall, with a fun group.

First hike of 2023...we almost went to the Superstitions today but decided on two hikes in the Cave Creek area--this one and St. Clair Peak/Indian Butte. We started with the falls first since this one was likely to get busy later in the day. We were the first ones at Blue Wash Trailhead just after sunrise, but a truck with two hikers pulled up right after we arrived. We had a nice sunrise over Four Peaks to the east and the just-past-full moon to the west as we got started...the temperature wasn't bad, but the wind chill made it a little cool.

The hike was pleasant and easy following Blue Wash, and the rock formations along the way were more interesting. As others have mentioned in triplogs, there are plenty of side trails that would be interesting to explore...the route to the falls was marked with arrows in quite a few places, some just drawn into the sand, others made with rocks, and some of the larger side trails also had rock arrows pointing toward them.

The couple that started ahead of us got lost near the Camp Creek/Blue Wash intersection and asked for directions when we caught up. We got to the falls before them, and I was happy to see that there was a decent flow of water...despite the rain last week, I wasn't expecting much given how dry it's been overall. I'm sure the falls get much bigger than what we saw today, but I was still pleased.

[ youtube video ]

We went above the falls and explored a short distance farther up Camp Creek before turning around, and the two hikers were already gone, but another one showed up with two dogs as we got back to the falls. The hike out provided confirmation that it was a good decision to start early for this one--we passed a group of six or seven hiking in, then a few more pairs of hikers closer to the trailhead, and there were six or seven cars in the lot when we got back. I'm sure it was only going to get busier later in the day as the temperature climbed. This was a simple, straightforward hike and a good warmup for the rest of the day, and we headed for St. Clair Peak next.

For some odd reason we both felt the need to walk uphill in loose sand and gravel this morning so we headed on over to Camp Creek Falls. Cathy hadn't been here in a couple of years and wanted to see if the falls were running after the recent rains.

We were the only car at the TH and had the falls to ourselves the entire time. They weren't gushing but any water is better than no water. Only on the way back out did we run into a couple of people just starting the trip down.

The entire look and nature of both Blue Wash and Camp Creek in particular was drastically changed from previous visits. Flash flooding of epic proportions was evident and the landscape was quite different.
Plant life was lush and the cool, moist, morning air and breeze was so refreshing we didn't want to leave. :)

My sister Michele (PilatesLady), from Tucson came up for the day to visit with Cathy. We decided to get in a quick hike before the day got too warm. She had never heard of or been to Camp Creek Falls and since it was close by we headed on out.

Eight cars at the trailhead when we arrived. That's eight more than what was once usual for a weekday morning pre-covid. Things sure have changed since the virus arrived. We passed some folks in both directions on the way down and actually had the falls to ourselves for a while. Not a lot of water flowing but enough to make the trip worthwhile. The ash, willow, sycamore, and cottonwoods were all showing signs of leafing out. It should be much greener in another month or so.

After the hike we had a nice home made ravioli linner with leftover apple blossoms a la mode from the recent hike with @tibber , @johnlp , and @trekkin_gecko . Thanks for making the drive up sis...it was great to see you!

Another local hike with my 11 year old Grandson, Michael, this time to Camp Creek Falls. This one scored high with both me and my Grandson - lots of rocks for him to climb with no trail stewards to worry about, a flowing waterfall, and a Red-tailed Hawk sighting. The distance reported was Grandpa miles. Michael probably came close to doubling that distance with his constant dithering back and forth exploring along the route and climbing practically every rock worth climbing. Unfortunately I had to limit his exploring because I wanted to get back to the car before dark. The creek was flowing with crystal clear water with sufficient flow rate to put on a decent show at the falls without getting wet feet hiking up the creek. The trail is well worn and easy to follow. However there are many well worn side trails leading who knows where that beg to be explored but could cause some route finding problems if the hiker doesn't know to stay in the bottom of Blue Wash until reaching Camp Creek where you turn left to follow the creek to the falls.

So this is why this trailhead is always so packed when I drive by it.

This was my(our) first time to the falls and I think we caught them at a good time. Our expectations were more than met in terms of the water we came across and the flow at the falls. Meanwhile, the hiking was easy and the dogs had a good time. It rained the entire time of our hike and conditions were approaching about as cold and wet as I like to be, before calling it. Nobody else at the trailhead and nobody else on the trail.

A promising start to this storm system and a perfect rainy morning hike before family holiday obligations. Happy Christmas Eve HAZ peeps.

About a year or more ago, I was returning from a driving adventure somewhere beyond 7 springs, and I saw this trailhead on the side of the road. I later looked it up and saw that there was water and thought, I should go there some day. This was that day. Got there about 7:30, 1 other car there, people still sitting inside. I headed out with the directions drop into the wash, follow wash, turn left at next wash. That worked out perfect. I will say there are about 10 different options to drop down into the wash. on the way down I saw a side trail, that looked more well traveled than the main wash itself so I took it. It went up and over and into a smaller wash that then connected back to the main wash. From the looks of things this was the horse bypass. Found the falls fairly easily. Wasn't sure what to expect for water flow, but there was a decent amount. I was the first one there that morning, hung out until a group of 5 showed up, then I passed several groups in as I was on my way out. Stuck to the main wash all the way back, found the old car, figured with all the climbing over rocks and under trees in the one section is why the horses use the bypass. Liked it out there.

Lots of cars at the TH and lots of people on the trail and at the waterfall. I needed a short hike for my kids (sadly, they do not enjoy hiking), and this one fit the bill. Lots of families with very small kids on the trail. The waterfall was flowing well. Despite all the people, it is a beautiful area.

I saw that Cave Creek was running nicely yesterday on my hike so I assumed Camp Creek would be as well so I decided to go see the waterfalls. This hike is close to home and Mrs. SloFolks has always enjoyed it so I hiked it for her. Cathy says "Hey there!" to all the HAZ folks out there. She hopes to get out of the hospital and start hiking again soon.

I descended down to Blue Wash from the equestrian trailhead instead of up the road at the wash to save myself a little bit of boulder scrambling. I tweaked my knee yesterday and had to wear my brace for the first time in a year. Everything felt OK but I'm still going to baby it for a while.

After reaching Blue Wash I was saddened to see what Covid and social media have done to this once beautiful hike. I was glad in a way that Cathy wasn't with me to witness all the vandalism and trash. Many of the large granite slabs in the narrows have been spray painted with BLM, BLACK LIVES MATTER, "F" the POLICE, and DEFUND THE POLICE in LARGE letters. I lost track of how many "disposable" face masks a saw strewn about...even above the falls towards Sears Kay Ranch. And don't even get me started on all the used toilet paper. ](*,)

Anyway, the falls were beautiful as always and were flowing nicely and the uphill trek in soft sand on the way out is always a joy for the calves.

Nice flow into a large pool. Camp creek running well past the confluence with Blue Wash.

This isn't my usual kind of trip, but one of my colleagues at work invited me to join his HOA walking crew for a short trip. The company must have been good. I didn't notice the graffiti discussed in the next log, though I have no doubt it was there.

The waterfall was flowing prettily. It is amusing how the water flows down stream from the falls, then just disappears into the sand.
