| no partners | | This hike was actually 3 different short hikes, each of which led to a Utah County Highpoint:
1) Kane County Highpoint (elevation of 10,080 feet with zero prominence)
2) Brian Head Peak (elevation of 11,307 feet and prominence of 3,747 feet), the highpoint of Iron County
3) Monument Peak (elevation of 10,452 and prominence of 1,617 feet), the highpoint of Carbon County
Kane County HP
I drove to the junction of FR-055 and FR-1642 and parked there -- most any vehicle could make it to this point. The road degraded past this point, and there was a downed tree across the road after about 1,500 feet, so you might as well park where I did. It was an easy road walk almost to the summit, where I had to weave my way through some trees to get to the highpoint.
There were no views along the way and none at the summit, so this one is mainly of interest to those trying to get all the Utah county highpoints. There are a lot of aspen trees along the hike, so late September/early October would be the best time for this hike.
Brian Head
You could drive to within about 200 feet of the summit on a well graded dirt road, but I stopped at a TH about one mile below the summit and walked the rest of the way. There are not many trees around, so this one had some good views along the way and at the summit. This seems to be a fairly popular area, so you won't likely have the place to yourself, especially on a weekend.
Monument Peak
This one is in a somewhat remote area, but there is a well graded dirt road to within 1,000 feet or so of the summit. There was a bit of snow on the road a little over a mile from the summit, so I went ahead and parked and walked the rest of the way. There were great views along the hike and at the summit, and I really enjoyed this little hike. I doubt if you'll see anyone else at the summit on this hike.

Kane County: 2.46 miles with an AEG of 445 feet
Brian Head: 1.94 miles with an AEG of 370 feet
Monument Peak: 2.62 miles with an AEG of 412 feet |
