We meant to do this out and back hike starting from the roadside trailhead on Tioga Road which is just .5 miles east of the turnoff for the May Lake Trailhead. Unfortunatley, there was road construction and we missed this pull off and ended up parking at the larger parking area just across the road from the May Lake Trailhead turn off. We got some bad information that the road to the trailhead was closed for paving. (They were just striping the freshly repaved parking lot at the May Lake Trailhead.) Long story short, we hike up the road for 1.7 miles to the May Lake Trailhead and then proceeded to May Lake. On our return trip we took the trail 2.1 miles from the May Lake Trailhead to the Tioga Road and then hiked the road .5 miles back to our car. Hiking the road up was actually pretty nice as it was well shaded and there was no traffic on it as everyone thought it was closed. It is a narrow road and well shaded under the trees. It took us an hour and 10 minutes to get up to the lake and 90 minutes to get back to the car. May Lake is beautiful and you can see why the High Sierra Camp there is so popular. The total hike came in a 7.0 miles with 1,100 fee of AEG in 2 hours and 40 minutes, not including a long stop at the lake. We then enjoyed lunch and beers in our hammocks at Lake Tenaya.

1st trip
With the Ferguson Fire ongoing, conditions were not optimal for this trip, but it kept most of the people away, so for the first 4 days I felt I had the entire backcountry to myself. I met more bears than people until reaching Glen Aulin.

Day 1: Starting at Tenaya Lake, I headed up Grant Creek Trail, and then over Tuolumne Peak pass into the South Fork of Cathedral Creek. It was a struggle to adjust to the elevation and the weight of all the food and water also slowed me down. Unable to find a trail report on these areas, I ended up carrying way more water than needed. The tarns near 10000 ft were still flowing, and the South Fork was flowing beautifully. I ended up camping out near a granite slickrock cascade in a beautiful area of this fork of Cathedral Creek. The trail routing was fantastic and I was constantly amazed how they had routed the trail.

Day 2: An early climb out of the canyon to beat the heat on a smokey morning, and then onto the Ten Lakes Basin. This area seemed peaceful, and I passed several ponds and eventually reached the main lake, though I couldn't even see to the other side or to the pass in front of me. Over the pass I go, where I encounter a butterfly migration, then down the trail and towards White Wolf. I setup camp the legal distance short of Lukens Lake junction.

Day 3: I pass the turnoff to White Wolf Lodge and head down the steep trail into Pate Valley. The smoke limited visibility to less than a quarter mile all day, so I couldn't see Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, and couldn't even see the river until I reached the bottom. The park service reports the bridge over the Tuolumne River destroyed, but there are still 3 timbers left, and good balance will get you across just fine. Based on the trail conditions it looks like they are running horse pack trains down there brining down materials to begin to rebuild it next year. I continue up river and find a great campsite. Unfortunately for me, right at dusk a large bear comes wandering in within 70 yards, and I yell to scare it away. Stood guard for an hour with no sign of it returning, but didn't get much sleep that night as the slightest noise had me wondering if it returned.

Day 4: I wake up after what little sleep I got and find my bear barrel untouched (Yosemite requires food canisters - neither hanging nor sacks are permitted). I walk upriver admiring the creek, and small cascades, before I reach the bypass around Muir Gorge. The waterfalls and sheer walls make the trail detour quite high, much higher than anticipated. But soon enough I am past it and continuing upriver. I pass a small juveline bear, which was an obvious problem bear, based both on its behavior and the obvious tags hanging from both ears. The skies begin to clear slightly and I am able to admire Waterwheel Falls, Le Conte, and California Falls before finding a small campsite late in the evening. I was quite tired from all the elevation gain and fell right asleep.

Day 5: When eating breakfast, a bear strolls up the trail about 10 yards from me, and surprised I yell at it. Turns out to be momma bear, because there is a tiny little furball following her around. They both pick up the pace and luckily don't appear to want any of my cereal. A little bit more climbing, and I enter the flat expanse of the river leading to Glen Aulin. After a short day I setup camp, explore the waterfalls above the camp, and generally relax all day reading a book, watching all the people come and go. The camp has tents for rent, as well as a backpacker campground with 30 sites, running potable water, and the composting toilets, like you find at Indian Gardens, as it is one of the High Sierra Camps.

Day 6: A short 8 miles and a little bit uphill to reach May Lake, the 2nd and last High Sierra Camp I will visit. The place it lightly populated and I generally laze around, watching some people fish.

Day 7: Smokey morning, so I head downhill back to Tenaya Lake and walk along the road and several trails to reach my vehicle.

denny and i wanted to do a hike on our way out of the park
we had several options, but mt. hoffmann was our first choice if we felt up to it after half dome
it's one of the featured hikes in denny's yosemite hiking book
chums has written a nice description for haz [ Mount Hoffmann Trail - Yosemite NP ]
got going early, arriving at may lake trailhead and beginning the hike at 0700
nice trail up to may lake, then a use trail along the lake, and up toward a meadow
a steeper grade up and around two false summits
we didn't see the peak until about a half mile to go
there is a flatter section of smooth trail leading to a saddle
the last pitch is a scramble up large granite boulders
a radio tower and a benchmark on top
this peak is the geographical center of yosemite, and the views are excellent
it wasn't quite as smoky or hazy this morning
we spent a few minutes on top, then headed down
the trail was easier to follow on the way down
i thought the unofficial trail on mt. dana was more obvious
another great peak and we were both glad we did it, even if the weekend's mileage and elevation gain were catching up with us
a good way to end the trip :)

denny, thank you so much for:
inviting me along - i had a great time
the stellar housing at yosemite lodge, more luxurious than our normal method of operation
driving - i liked the vegas route; very little traffic
safety first and watch out for clowns
you're a great hiking partner, and :yr:

Between our Yosemite book and some encouragement from Haz triplogs, this was on our short list of last day hikes. We picked a handful of hikes in different degrees of toughness. Get a good nights sleep and see what we think we are up for. This was our first choice and neither one of us wanted to be the one to yell uncle. Let's do it. The trail to the lake climbs 4 or 500 feet but was in good shape and went by smoothly. The Sierra Camp did not open this year so there was no one there when we started. From there the route goes around to the left of the lake then starts climbing and goes to the left of the two peaks you can see from the lake. A good little climb. Once you get to the next level the trail is better until you get to the base of the summit. There are some cool rock formations on the ridge of the summit. There is a little antenna on the north summit and it is a little scramble to get up there. There was a little ice before the climb that looked like it had no bottom to it :scared: . 360 views from the top were awesome. Even on a hazy day. The clmib down went great. We saw about half a dozen Marmots and Sooty Grouse. We didn't see anyone until we got back to the lake. He was going to hike Mt. Hoffmann also. After that it was a few people closer to the car. They all looked to be doing May Lake only. Great hike and so glad we got to do it before the long drive home. We stopped at the station at the bottom of the hill after leaving the park. It would be the first of many caffeine stops for the both of us on the way home. Driving home we stopped in Tonopah at the brewery for a late lunch and the food was delicious! From there it was 2 more quick stops and Kelly home a little after 11pm. What a great day for our last one before heading back to reality. My first trip to Yosemite was awesome! Thanks to Kelly for making everything go so smooth! :y: :app: :y: :D

Backpacked the short hike into the May Lake campground, unloaded a bit, then headed up to the peak of Mount Hoffmann. It's a bit of a scary scramble near the end (the radio antenna), but the views were stunning, and the milky way on a clear night can't be beat!

Brian wanted to get some good photos, so we stayed up there until 11pm, and lemme tell ya--got a tit bit nipply.

We headed to Yosemite on our second day and set up camp in White Wolf. We had the afternoon for some hiking so we headed back towards Tuolumne Meadows. Claire and I had our sights set on Mount Hoffman while Chumley was heading for Tenaya Peak. We dropped him off at the Sunrise Trailhead and then drove over to the May Lake Trailhead and started hiking soon after.

The first mile is fairly easy as you hike up to May Lake. From there we headed southwest on a well defined trail. The trail makes a solid climb up a rocky gully and then turns to the northwest and makes an aggressive climb for the summit. This climb took some effort as we made steady progress and stopped to admire the amazing views of Yosemite. Mount Hoffman is the geographical center of Yosemite and climbs to 10,850 ft. It was a clear day and we could see for miles!

The true summit finally comes into view roughly a half mile out. We could feel the elevation at this point and slowly headed up. The final push to the summit is a scramble that gets the heart rate up but is fairly straightforward. We took a direct route up and felt elated on the summit! The 360 views are just jaw dropping! We took a break and enjoyed a snack. There was a father and son on the summit too and they were good company. After we had our fill we started the descent. We opted for a safer descent that made a zigzag down. Once below the scramble section we made solid time back to the trailhead and met up with Chumley soon after.

Mount Hoffman is a sweet hike that only takes a few hours. The views are jaw dropping and the climb up is really fun. This is the perfect hike for those looking to get away from the crowds and off the beaten path.

The plan was to hike Mt. Hoffman. Took a couple friends, and was going to have them hang out at May Lake while I hit the summit. The road was closed, so we had to hike 2 more miles in on the road to get to the TH to May Lake. Lots of snow on the trail, but once at the lake, it was mostly still frozen over and couldn't find the trail to the summit. Didn't have spikes or shoes or anything, so got shafted on the summit, but MAN was May Lake stunningly BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! We hung out there for a couple hours and just enjoyed the view and lunch. Saw about 4 other people the whole day - LOVE these off-beat hikes!

I saw Chumleys post of Mount Hoffman before heading out to Yosemite and thought it would make for an nice day hike. It was the perfect follow up to Half Dome, and I personally thought the views were better!

Hippy wasn't feeling well, so she stayed back at the trailhead and took a nap while I explored this awesome (nearly) 11,000-foot peak in the geographic center of Yosemite National Park. The weather was great ... mid 60s, cloudy, and an occasional sprinkle. Ideally it would have been clear, but the views were still unbelievably spectacular. I made great time for a first ascent despite lots of stopping to take pictures, 90 minutes. I probably passed 20 people coming down, and saw another handful still going up. But it was a pleasantly unpopulated trail for midsummer in this National Park ... and for the views, this has to be the best short hike Yosemite has to offer.

I took some photos up top, but didn't spend a lot of time exploring. Another trip and I might visit the other two "false peaks" east of the true summit. It would be a great place to spend an entire afternoon (as long as no lightning threatens).

To anybody driving the Tioga Road, I can't recommend this hike enough!
