Got a late start on this day due to cooking a big breakfast and yakking with my neighbors over coffee at their campsite. So I decided to take it easy and just explore these two lakes near the Mosquito Flats/Little Lakes Valley Trailhead. Even with extending the hike in a loop around another lake I was able to far exceed my goal "to take it easy". Only 2.2 miles with almost no elevation gain. I didn't see another person on this weekday hike although the well worn trail and its closeness to the trailhead indicates it gets lots of use on weekends and holidays.

If you're looking for an easy 2 mile hike for toddlers (or worn-out oldsters) to see a couple of scenic mountain lakes, this is your ticket. Just don't take them past the two Eastern Brook Lakes to Serene Lake. The small amount of off-trail thrashing isn't worth the effort for that not-so-scenic lake.

My dad had the chance to work in Mammoth Lake, California. So I told him to drop me off into the wilderness while he had to work for the 3 days we were there. Mosquito Flat is a beautiful place! Cold, but beautiful! When we made it to the trail head, I realized I forgot my sleeping bag.....uh oh! :( So we hit the trail and it was hard, we could barley breath in this 10,500ft elevation. The trail was only 1.5 miles to the second lake(our destination), and it took us about an hour and a half. The first night we all slept in a Kelty 2 man tent, warm but very uncomfortable! The second night I slept by myself in my other tent, had more room but very cold! I went swimming in both Heart Lake and Long Lake, the water was around 45-50 degrees. I'm so used to searching for water holes here in AZ I just had to do it! We all had a tad bit of altitude sickness. But I felt better on the third day.....my friends felt worse! All in all, it was one of the most beautiful places I've been to, and had an amazing experience! Can't wait to go to the Sierra Nevadas again!
