I did 3 different hikes in Imperial County, CA, with each hike going to a wilderness area high point:
1) High point of the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area (elevation of 500 feet and prominence of 126 feet)
2) High point of the Milpitas Wash Wilderness Area (elevation of 875 feet and prominence of zero)
3) Well Benchmark, the high point of the Buzzards Peak Wilderness Area (elevation of 1,604 feet and prominence of 484 feet)

North Algodones Dunes
(7.67 miles with 859 feet of AEG)
This wilderness area is about 8 miles wide and 40 miles long, and it encompasses one of the largest dune complexes in North America. I had to walk about 3 miles across the sand to get to the area with the highest dunes. The sandy walk wasn't all that great, but it was pretty cool going up on the dunes. I marked waypoints for the 3 highest dunes, and I thought that the one to the SE was the highest.

Milpitas Wash
(0.17 miles with 4 feet of AEG)
This was basically a mailbox hike. I parked at a curve in the road and walked over to the highpoint, which is about 50 feet off the road.

Well Benchmark
(4.33 miles with 753 feet of AEG)
On this hike I was in a wash for about 1.5 miles, and then went up a steep slippery slope to the peak. I found the benchmark and one reference mark. On the descent I followed a ridgeline back around and took it down to the wash. This avoided the steep, slippery slope that I went up on my ascent.

7.82 miles and 350 AEG (35 floors) on FitBit Imperial National Wildlife Refuge :next: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/imperial/

Headed north on SR95 until you reach Martinez Lake Road. At about 35 miles from Yuma, turn onto Red Cloud Mine Road. Pavement ends just beyond this intersection. Stop in at the Visitor Center and check out the Meers Point Trail (HAZ :next: [ Meers Point Trail ] ) boardwalk overlooking Martinez Lake.

Painted Desert Trail (HAZ :next: [ Painted Desert Trail ] ) is a 1.3 mile loop heading east from the trail head parking (with restroom and picnic table ramada) along Red Cloud Mine Road. Painted Desert Trail is comprised of rocks tinted by minerals - iron creates the rusty reds, copper the blue-green tones. In the washes saw plenty of evidence of wild burros. Also saw about a dozen deer in the TH vicinity when we passed by after sundown...

Smoke Tree Point (HAZ :next: [ Smoke Tree Point ] ) to catch sundown. Plenty of ducks, coots, and cormorants in nearby Butler Lake.

Didn't have time to make it Red Cloud Mines and Ghost Town :next: https://www.in-the-desert.com/redcloud.html Maybe next time...

Checked into our Yuma AZ base camp at the local, dog friendly, Holiday Inn :next: https://www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/u ... oteldetail

10.18 miles and 650 AEG (65 floors) on FitBit Indian Pass Arches and Imperial Dunes (North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area )

Headed west from Yuma on I-8 into California. Turnoff at Ogilby Road and headed north about 12.5 miles to Indian Pass Road. Take Indian Pass Road (aka EC649) about 8.5 miles to the TH Parking and Kiosk. It is strictly high clearance 4WD beyond this point. Hike down 0.63 miles into the main wash (Gavilan Wash). EC649 will continue to the right (east) as you enter Gavilan Wash. Hike to the left and enter the Wilderness Area as you head up the wash another 1.39 miles to Indian Pass Arches. You will notice the arches up on your right as the wash enters a zone of distinctive white/yellow conglomerate surrounding rising bands of black/brown volcanic rock. My iPhone GPS indicated 2.02 miles one-way from where we parked my truck to the three arches. Indian Pass Arches on HAZ :next: [ Indian Pass Arches ] This trio of arches is located in the Black Mountains at the Western edge of the Picacho Peak Wilderness.

Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area via Osborne Overlook (HAZ :next: [ Osborne Overlook - Imperial Sand Dunes ] ) and Watchable Wildlife Site (HAZ :next: [ Watchable Wildlife Site - Imperial Sand Dunes ] ) to access North Algodones Dunes Wilderness :next: [ North Algodones Dunes Widlerness Trails ] Caught sunset on the dunes at Osborne Overlook.

5.61 miles and 110 AEG (11 floors) on FitBit Betty's Kitchen :next: [ Betty's Kitchen ]

Checked out of our Holiday Inn Yuma base camp and headed to the iconic territorial prison (my hommage to "3:10 to Yuma") and a local wildlife and agriculture tour via Levee Road up to Laguna Dam and Imperial Dam. Found a roadside tank and artillery exhibit just before Imperial Dam Road joins onto SR95.
