Opted for an easy-ish hike at Cedar Breaks today since it’s not too far from the cabin and I didn’t feel like another day of driving.

Lots of construction at the monument—looks like some new buildings going up, and parking is somewhat limited.

Headed out on the Spectra/Ramparts trail around 1000. As usual, great views and not too crowded. Temps felt a little warm, but there were some clouds to help. It was my first time hiking around 10k’ in a while, and I definitely noticed it.

The Ramparts viewpoint used to be the end of this trail, but I was slightly confused today since I noticed a trail continuing west from Ramparts. I decided to follow it, at first thinking I had forgotten this trail, but if was definitely new to me, and clearly an official park trail. Some quick research confirmed that this is all the ‘South Rim Trail’ now and it ends at Bartizen Viewpoint almost a mile west of Ramparts. Will update the guide with all the new info when I get a chance.

The new portion of the trail has limited amphitheater views as it continues downhill, but is still quite pleasant. Approaching Bartizen is very pretty, with a double window in the rocks to the left of the viewpoint. The clay/rocks look very unstable, so I don’t know how long that window will be around, especially since anyone can walk over to it. The viewpoint was nice and seemed to be where the trail now ends, but there was a use trail leading up to The Bartizen. Only about 15’ of the use trail was steep, the rest was easy. If you’re going to hike all this way, you might as well take the extra five minutes to follow the use trail. Views from the top were excellent, and among the best of the entire trail.

The hike back out was mostly uphill, and I would have preferred temps at least a few degrees cooler, but I really can’t complain about 75 degrees. Great hike for an easy day.

Day #1 of our weeklong road trip that began at Cedar Breaks National Monument. Our group had a lottery ticket to hike Mt. Whitney on the 18th. In order to get some altitude for a few days, one of our team had stumbled across Cedar Breaks on a map and suggested camping there. The campground itself sits at 10,350 feet and has a clean restroom and hot showers. The campsites are perfect for car camping. We learned earlier that our reservations for Whitney Portal and Mt Whitney had been cancelled, but with a week off from work and family responsibilities me and one other of our group decided to stick to our original plan of going to Utah and from there figure out where to go hiking.

We lucked out on weather, despite the higher elevation it only got down to about 40 degrees at night and about 70 during the day, plus miraculously little to no wind. Got nervous about the wind when I noticed a lot of trees with branches dramatically shorter on the west facing side.

This trail starts from the visitor's center parking lot and offers in my opinion the best views of the park. Just be warned there are no guard rails and a few steep, sandy drop offs. There is also a section of bristlecone pine trees to look at along the way. A simple out and back trail with just enough AEG to flush out the effects of an 8 hour drive.

Services in the area are minimal, but did find a surprisingly good Thai restaurant for lunch one day in Brian Head Utah which is about a 10 minute drive away.

Sort of a stormy day, so we were lazy in the morning, then headed out in the afternoon for a quick hike at Cedar Breaks. Hiked the Ramparts-Spectra trail out to the end and back. There were a couple of sprinkles here and there, and a few rumbles of thunder, but it didn't rain until after we were done. I promised the kids a marmot, and we did see one--thank goodness! Always a fun hike.

Quick stop at Cedar Breaks before the long drive home. Only went out to Spectra Point. Definitely not a place to let small kids run around. The early morning sunlight is not great at Cedar Breaks, late afternoon is best, but we still got some good pictures. The 55 degree temps were most welcome too. Most of the snow was gone, with just a few drifts here and there.

Back at Cedar breaks camping for 2 nights found me hiking this in the early afternoon. Storms built fast and I got a little wet, but it wasn't as bad as the mud on the trail which glues itself to your shoes. Didn't get to relax at the trails end, but I enjoyed a drive up Brian Head.

Most of the photos were from Brian Head, driving, or just random Cedar Breaks pics, so I made this generic. Stats are for the Ramparts- Spectra point trail.

Went up to Cedar Breaks after we had checked in to our hotel in Cedar City. I like Cedar Breaks in late afternoon, since I think the sunlight is best up there at that time of day. The kids and I walked out to Spectra Point, then turned around. As always, great views and hardly any people. Temps were in the mid 60's, and it felt great.

Zion was simply too dam hot! After a trip to Lava Point during the day Sunday, I drove to the East Rim Trail trailhead and when I arrived at 6 PM I still found the temperature near 100, with an overcast. No way was I doing that trail! Besides, I was still tired from the day before on the West Rim. So, I was going to Cedar Breaks!

Like a small version of Bryce without the Asian tourists screaming at each other in the amphitheater or the Dude Ranch horse tours, it is quiet, cool, and a nice place to relax and enjoy the scenery. This is what I think of as the Monument's main trail, as it is the longest out along the rim, and it has great views. There are others, but this takes you to some spectacular scenery. Bristlecone pines are at both view points, btw. Also, a creek runs right along the trail in parts, and is enjoyable to stop at.

Medium for the creek, I guess. Clear, cold running water just yards from the rim edge.

Third hike of the day. I absolutely loved Cedar Breaks! We got here late afternoon, so only had time for one trail. The views were incredible and the late day sun added to the colors.

Stopped in for a short trip and photo op with nice light and clouds. Squirrel tried to intimidate me for food, and a marmot was a total photo hog. Love the Bristlecone pines! Not too many folks on the trail and everyone in a great mood. Even got my windshield cleaned while I was getting fuel at the Conoco in Beaver, UT! Definite positive vibes in this area of the state---

This park is just gearing up for summer visits. Still some snow around, few visitors yet.

Went down to Cedar Breaks for a few hours today. Beautiful area, comparable to Bryce Canyon. Some pretty neat Bristlecones growing on this trail, although these are younguns, the oldest bristlecone at Cedar Breaks is a mere 1700 years old! :o
