Weather looked about perfect and I haven't been out here for 2.5 years, so figured why not. Planned on getting in Friday afternoon for a lazy fishing jaunt and a buddy joining me on saturday.

The road in is mostly pretty fine. There's this weird sand dune .25 miles once you turn off of 260 that I may have taken a little tooooo fast going in but whatever. On the way out, I saw a sedan almost get stuck (they did make it though!). Outside of that, it's in good condition until the initial decent into the canyon where it's fairly rutted and then when you make the turn for the final decent where it's fairly rutted as well. Take it slow and you're good to go; on the way out I saw a tesla at the trailhead so anyone can do it.

I was really expecting this to be a nice productive fishing trip as, in the past, I've never been skunked and always get 10+ fish easily (C+R) in a short period but man. I saw maybe one or two 3-4 inch fish the whole time and the water was crystal clear. Not a single nibble. I expect the flooding from two years ago wiped out/swept away the population and it just hasn't recovered yet but that was pretty disappointing. Would be curious if other people have had a different experience in the last two years and it just wasn't a good day.

The camping was fantastic; lows of 40ish, highs of mid-70s, good company. We did have a group of 4ish boys and their parents come into our campsite area and just like... try to hang out? Not talk to me or my buddy, but do their own thing 10-15 feet from us... After a little bit I mentioned to them that it was generally not considered good sport to just come into someones camp area and hang out and the two adults didn't give any pushback or anything like that but just was a weird experience. It's a wilderness area, tents are set up, don't go goofing off right by me. Everyone was perfectly polite so no biggie but just basic etiquette.

All in all, good trip until I had to drive home. First time hitting the i-17 re-routes on the weekend and it took me 70 minutes to go 1.5 miles where they dump you on to carefree highway. It almost would have been faster if I left Camp Verde and went to my NPhx home via beeline instead. Boo for that.

First time hiking at WCC, nice flow and crystal clear water. Even though trees were past prime fall colors still had a great fall feel. Very quiet on the trail saw 1 person on way in and a couple on the way out. Awesome area and trail well maintained.

This is another hike that has been on my wish list for several years. I think I shied away from it because of descriptions of the drive in. We started from the Bull Pen side. Most of the road was ok, but I would definitely recommend high clearance. That said, there were several "low clearance" cars at the TH, though I'm pretty sure they are worse for the wear.

We got a little later start from the Valley, but when we arrived at TH, there were still a couple of parking spots in the main area. It is a popular area, but most people stay close by, so after we passed the Bull Pen ranch structure and hit the Wilderness Boundary- (about 1 mi. from the TH), we enjoyed a lot of solitude. (The non-hikers will likely peel off at the ranch structure and head down to the creek, where there is a large/deep swimming hole, with a 25+ ft. cliff jump and a couple of rope swings).

Prior to the wilderness boundary, the trail does not go near the creek until just past the Wilderness Boundary sign. At that point, the creek narrows to create a nice mini slide rock. Another 30 yards up is a small jumping spot on the north side of the creek.

The trail then parallels the creek on the north side until the first crossing, about 0.3 mi. from the wilderness boundary.

Camping is permitted beyond the first creek crossing. From there, we just tromped up the creek to the second crossing, which was close by, and also was banded on the north by a beautiful red rock cliff face. (I recommend this option, as we took the 2nd crossing on the way back and asked ourselves: why?).

After the second crossing, we followed the trail, occasionally biting on side trails that lead down to the creek. I highly recommend this as well, since the highlight of the hike is the creek, after all. Doing so helped us identify some lovely campsites.

After the third crossing (now travelling on the south side of the creek), we again took a side trail to the creek and were rewarded with a couple of lovely swimming holes and an ideal camping area (which was occupied).

After playing around at the swimming hole and eating our lunch, we decided to once again just explore up the creek itself. We enjoyed this, but after a time, found it a bit of a challenge to reconnect with the trail. The trail was not far off the creek, but the south edge was bounded by steep walls with thick vegetation. So, we ended up going a little further than originally planned, until we found a slight drainage that involved minimal bushwhacking.

Back on the trail, we thought we'd make it to the 4th and final crossing, but decided that, given the hour and our energy reserves, we'd turn around instead. Before doing so, I followed one more rabbit trail down to the creek, which led to a nice confluence of three cascading falls, and dipped myself at the base of each for short "creek massage." It felt wonderful and provided a nice "end point."

The hike back was fine. We dipped ourselves in the creek at the crossings to keep cool. And a the ranch structure, I decided to go down to the big/popular swimming hole/cliff jump to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out, the fuss was justified. There were about 25 people in the area, but it didn't seem crowded, and was a lot of fun. There is a rope assist to get to the top of the cliff for jumping.

On the way back, I took one of the alternate trails, and it worked out great. I spooked a white-tailed deer who didn't notice me until we were about 10 yards apart.

Back at the parking area, I wanted to see where the closest creek access was, so I wandered over, and ended up seeing a nice blue heron hanging out on a rock in the middle of the creek. Nice way to end the trip.

I'll definitely be back!

I usually hit up WCC every April, right as stockings begin. I rolled in Friday afternoon and checked out the lower area by the 260 bridge. Lots of folks parked, playing guitar, and just sitting in lawn chairs along the creek, but nobody fishing. The water is high and murky, I would be surprised if they had stocked.
The bullpen road is pretty good, all the way to the locked gate at the cattle guard. Uh oh... Oh well no problem on the mountain bike. At least I won't be battling any cars during my hike-a-biking. As I rolled into bullpen, whoa! It is destroyed. The road to the parking lot is a creek now with several pools over 3 foot deep. Deep sand, huge rocks, mud, and fence parts all over, a terrible mess. The actual parking area is completely not accessible, half is part of a flowing creek. I pushed my bike through and rode on to the wilderness boundary sign. Saw a guy fly fishing, he said the first crossing was chest deep, so that's a no go today. We chatted a bit before I headed back to the parking lot, I mean creek bed.
I didn't feel like pedaling and HAB back out, so I went ahead and camped in an obscure part of the parking lot. I know you're not supposed to camp in the parking lot, but since no one can park there, I figured I could camp there. This area will be closed a long time I'm guessing. I filtered some water from the road, gathered some firewood, and settled in for a quiet night. I was packed up and headed out by 7:30AM, drove over to Tonto creek and caught over a dozen trout. They are stocking Tonto heavily above HWY 260.

Annual trip to Maiden Falls. High temp for the day was ~105°, perfect day to be at the creek. Parked on Cedar Flats Road, 1 mile from the true trailhead, because that last mile is impossible for my low-clearance vehicle. Accompanied a family (a dad, his 3 daughters, and a friend of 1 daughter) on the 2-mile descent to the creek, where we all jumped in, and it was amazing. The family stayed at that swimming hole while we traveled upstream, stopping at each cascade along the way. The water temperature was perfect. There was a group camping at the top of Maiden Falls. We hung out there for a while, relaxing and cliff jumping, then headed back. The sun went down as we left the creek, and the temperature was much cooler for the 2 mile ascent out of the canyon, just as we planned. Feet were a little sore from all the rock hopping, but otherwise felt great. We passed 3 other groups of people along the 11 mile span. I picked up a couple discarded water bottles and a long stretch of fishing line (with bobber and treble hook attached) out of the creek, didn't see any other trash. It was a beautiful day and enjoyed by all.

I've been wanting to try out fishing while backpacking for a bit now and had picked up a cheapo telescoping pole that only weighs 7 or 8oz for that. Had some time to myself on Sunday night and nothing scheduled for the morning so headed up to WCC and got to the trailhead around 2:30 or so. I was here last Fall/early winter and the road, while not bad then, is better now. Very smooth except for a little washboard action in the half mile or so near the TH.

Hiking in, I saw just a few groups headed back to the trailhead and two ladies soaking in the creek who had decided it was clearly top-optional. Good on them, no complaints here. I didn't hike too far in as this trip was just about relaxing and trying out the fishing thing. I found a good spot that looked promising for fishing and absolutely perfect for my hammock.

Once I got everything set up, went to fishing with a small roostertail and what do you know, got a small mouth on the first cast! Best part is my daughter had asked me to take a video of me fishing so I had set my camera up and got it on video, which she'll love. It was about 7-8inches, so bigger than the 2 inch guy that was my only score when I came out here with a buddy last year (that trip kicked off my interest in the fishing thing). I ended up fishing this spot and a couple of others and ended up getting 6, all about the same size. Tried my luck again for a half hour before packing up but no luck. Fun time all in all and was a beautiful spot with perfect weather.

I would have to describe this hike as a tease, especially driving down the last mile and all of a sudden seeing this ribbon of lush spring green along the river valley. I almost thought this might be like Aravaipa! Not! I hiked a little beyond the 4th crossing and 95% of the time the trail was not near the creek, nor even in the shade under all the cottonwoods that lined the banks. Crossings were uneventful, with only the first crossing thigh deep. The surrounding cliffs and mountains were scenic, but couldn't offset my disappointment with how dry and exposed the trail was. Why the trail was sited the way it was is a mystery. For me, this trail is not worthy of a repeat, though I'm glad I at least checked it out

Made a last minute trip to WCC for some fishing upstream of Bull Pen and to check on a familiar campsite. The hike in was warm Tuesday morning but the crossings always cool you off. Before reaching my final destination campsite, about 7 miles in, I came across an unusual find. Hanging from a tree off trail was, a large black Bear Grylls type backpack, with a black folding chair, and a medium sized black zippered bag, all clipped together hanging from a tree with a small piece of mule tape. I didn't dig into it of course, but it was difficult to pass without bumping into it. In a side pouch I noticed a can of bear spray in the Bear Grylls type backpack. Odd, maybe, for this area? There were no spider webs, dust, or debris on the gear leading me to believe it was recently placed. Kudos for carrying the large folding chair this far, they should get a Medal. When I left on Thursday the gear was still there. I suspect maybe someone was setting up a Maiden Falls trip and stashed the big stuff ahead of time. The campsite has continued to erode but it is still pretty nice.

Backpacked in from Bullpen, dayhiked to Maiden Falls and a little behind to the next narrows area. We saw a few people at the falls on the way out, but definitely not as many folks as I expected out on the long weekend.

Decent road. No need for 4x4 just take your time in some places. Get here early for parking. A nice thru green vegetation. You will get wet at the river crossings. Be prepared to take shoes off at the third one. Only went just past the third river crossing. Great day!

The road is decent. A couple of ruff spots but a two wheel drive can make it. Get to the trail head early. This is a popular spot. Beautiful day to be on this trail. Only did 3 miles out so 6 all together. Did three river crossings. The last one there was no way to rock hop across. So, off with the shoes and wade across. Nice and refreshing. Nice easy hike. Next time I'll be ready to play in the water. You should too.

First trip into the WCC Wilderness. This was a post-vaccination hike with Luna. I am probably the last person on HAZ who has never been to West Clear Creek (up until now).

We started out at the trailhead at 11:30 with temps in the upper 70's. I was one of 3 or 4 vehicles at the Bullpen parking lot.

This canyon starts right out with stunning views, but it is a lot less narrow than the pictures I have seen. I imagine Bullpen is the wide end of the WCC.

Luna and I crossed the creek twice and turned around at the third creek crossing. I stayed dry by rock hopping, but Luna was incredibly comical trying to copy me jumping from rock to rock. She fell in the water at the first crossing and ended up remembering how to swim on the fly. She was a little bit lethargic from the heat and first hike of the day. The swim put the spring back into her step.

The trail is 100% wide and clear. We saw no one on the way in, but 9 hikers on the way out.

There was a Prius parked when we got back to the lot and I saw a minivan driving in so I guess that gives the all clear for virtually any vehicle. I personally would not drive a sedan on any of these roads.

Looking forward to exploring a few of the entryways into the wilderness further upstream and going deeper into the magical area.

I took advantage of the warm Friday and headed into lower WCC for a few days to fish. The water is low and clear and the fishing not so good, but I did catch 4 Smallmouth Bass on spinners. Saw plenty of trout and the hole by the parking lot is loaded with fresh stockers. Just look for the folding metal chair and fish there.
Saw a rattler near the 3rd crossing on Friday, not sure which variety, in the bright sunlight it looked greenish.

A pleasant, surprisingly warm, and secluded one-nighter clockwise around Blodgett to West Clear Creek Trail. My first time on an AZ classic! A tip to aspiring backpackers- be creative & seek previously camped spots on the "esplanade" if the main locations by the creek are already taken. We had neighbors thrashing about in the brush by the water for a less than desirable camp.
