| no partners | | Went back to one of my favorite little spots in the Catalina's. Started up the Soldier Trail and then went over to see how much water was going over the first couple sets of waterfalls.
Saw fresh bear scat again this year and numerous tracks from bobcats, bear and I think a mountain lion in the sand near one of the big watering holes. But didn't see anything other than a few birds the entire time. Love getting out early and had the entire place to myself. Didn't any other people until I was almost back to my car and then had to wait for a train of hikers from Canyon Ranch. |

| no partners | | My first time canyoneering! As a long-time rock climber, scrambler, and puddle jumper, I'm not sure why I haven't tried this before. Tons of fun! We set up a car shuttle and took off from Gordon Hirabayashi. We took our time and set up a couple of rappels--one in the middle of a waterfall. We saw (and utilized) some existing webbing rappel anchors that were in usable condition. |

| partners | | Organized a Cave Grotto trip down Soldier Canyon on a full moon. Caving and Canyoneering have a lot of similarities so it is nice to be able to have a larger group hangout! Normally cave trips are limited to 6 people. 12 members attended the hike. We did 3 rappers. There was a pool at the bottom of the first rappel which was surprising because it hadn’t rained in a while. Then on the second stage of the second rappel a dead tree was in the way. We used the sneak route out of the canyon back to the trail. We got all 12 of us through and back to the cars in less than 4 hrs! |

| partners | | Joel's first canyon after the incident! Took a caver friend, a newbie, and a few experienced peeps. Had a great time. I find it interesting how quickly the webbing leaves this area. I believe we only found one piece of webbing and Joel had done this canyon about 5-6 months ago. The beauty of this area is that it is all natural anchors so you need to know a thing or two. |

| no partners | | I did this hike two days after a big winter rain storm and the waterfalls were amazing. If you have enjoyed hiking the canyon when it is dry or with just a trickle, it is definitely worth going back to check it out after a rain. |

| partners | | Very windy in the canyon, it made for some of us wishing for sun. Nice time with only a few surprises. The two Gopher Snakes in the grass woke Joel up in a hurry.
There was water today after the Monday visit from the remnant of Himmicane Norbert. |

| partners | | Belinda had a longer palisades trip planned, but was out of commission. The rest of us decided to do something a little shorter - plus I had not done Soldier yet. The canyon was great with all the water from the previous storm. We either did 4 or 5 rappels. There were anchors in place at every rap, but I replaced everyone. They either had hollow rap rings or faded webbing.
Fun half day of canyoneering. Temp was pretty perfect. |

| no partners | | Conned a friend into playing hooky with me since I've been off all week enjoying time between jobs. I wanted to do a recon mission of this canyon to see what it's like. I discovered a very beautiful canyon!
We met at Hairpin at 5 AM. We left one car there and then drove up to Prison Camp. The campground was closed which means we had a bit more walking to do...
We dropped into the canyon early to ensure we didn't miss much.
We ended up doing 5 rappels in which I used natural features to build all the anchors. A couple rappels we had to work really hard to avoid all the wasps that were around. On one rappel the rope got stuck in a crack so I had to use my microtraction and VT Prusik to get up high enough on the rope to fix the issue. We did pretty good with teamwork and learned a bit from each other.
I had a lunch date at 11:30 and I was only about 15 minutes late! |
