The initial descent into the canyon is a free-for-all. It is moderately steep slickrock, with moderate vegetation. There are multiple "trails" that zigzag down, with cairns everywhere, and different groups choosing different routes. Once in the canyon, there are multiple crisscrossing trails, all marked by cairns, and all generally going in the same direction. Eventually there is another steep drop, with several ways to zigzag down. After that, there is one main trail through thick trees along the river, with five river crossings, which range from 12 inches to 3 feet deep. There are steep embankments, and those under 5'5" had a bit of a challenge climbing out of the river at some of the crossings.
Eventually we reached Neon Canyon, which had a lot of cool rock formations to walk through and climb around. The cathedral itself was fascinating, with the shadows and reflections on the cave walls. The water there was quite stagnant and I don't recommend entering it. We spent a couple hours relaxing there.
We took the direct route back, which was quicker and far less scenic, with one river crossing, two steep climbs, and a lot of sand.
Overall, a great time and a unique adventure. Very crowded at the beginning and at the open area near the first river crossing, but no other people at the Cathedral for almost 2 hours. |
