Fourth day in Vegas. First serious hike in a couple of months. Rough, but fun way to get back on the horse. This hike takes place in the Red Rock Canyon Conseravation and this trail, along with most of the other trail in the area are accessed via a one way scenic drive route. Not a huge deal except that through the end of May, between 8am-5pm, you need an appointment to drive the route. (Not sure if they make allowance if you come just to hike)….because I arrived at 6:15 :D . There is a fee to enter this area, but my National Park Pass got me in for no charge.

The trail is located at the Quarry Sands TH. There is enough parking for about 30 vehicles. There was only one other car there when I arrived, but I imagine it fills up fast once the masses awaken. (This is Las Vegas so it’s probably not that early :) ). There are four official trails that begin and/or intersect with this TH, one of them being Turtlehead. The trail is fairly easy to follow and well marked for most of the duration. A couple of hundred yards in the trail splits at a marker - to the right Calico Tanks to the left Turtlehead. The first half mile of the trail is probably some of the prettiest you’ll hike…and some of the easiest. The trail weaves between large, colorful monolithic rocks and then has a short gradual climb to where the hike really begins. The track for this first climb was well defined. It gained elevation fairly aggressively and there were multiple rocky step like sections. I was thinking that when I hit the saddle the hard part would be over was somewhat misguided. The saddle was pretty cool with the rock formations but I discovered that there was still quite a bit of elevation to be gained. The trail markings from this point to the top are not quite as solid. I hung more to the left, taking a more gradual approach to the top and I felt like I was on a trail most of the time. However, there is good chance I was on several different threads that intertwined on their way to the top. The foliage up top is quite a bit sparser, so one can take any route they desire. That being said, they all lead to the same spot and they got me to the top. Views from the top were nice. Las Vegas being the the biggest eye catcher. I’m sure it would be a very cool view at night. Took the same route down. No wildlife and only encountered three hikers on the trail.

I went to Vegas to hike up to Charleston Peak, and decided to hike Turtlehead the day before doing Charleston.

This is a short but steep hike, and the trail is a bit slippery in the last mile or so to the summit.

This turned out to be a fun and scenic hike, and I am glad to have bagged this peak.

The park did not open until 8:00 AM (perhaps due to COVID-19??), so we started a later than I would have liked. Fortunately, there was some cloud clover and there was a bit of a breeze blowing, so it turned out to comfortable weather-wise.

The trail was mostly easy to follow, but as you get closer to the summit there are multiple side paths to choose from. There were some painted dots on rocks, so it wasn't too difficult to stay on course. As we neared the summit, we took a path that looped around to the east in order to make the final ascent less steep. We took the more direct route on the way down. There were nice views at the summit, so we hung out there for a bit.

Shortly before getting back to the TH, we took a short side trip to climb up on some rocks at an old rock quarry, which was kind of fun!

While you might not want to go all the Vegas solely to do this hike, if you are in the area I'd recommend this hike if you are looking for a short but sweet hike!

On day two of my Vegas excursion I did some solo hiking in the Red Rock Canyon area west of Vegas. The first hike was up to Turtlehead Peak. This is about a 2000 foot climb to a peak with great views to the east over Las Vegas and to the west and south of Red Rock Canyon and the Keystone Thrust Fault. This hike is what I call strenuous, in the order of Pusch Peak near Tucson, except the trail isn’t as good. The trail starts out as a super highway at the Sandstone Quarry Trail Head in Red Rock Canyon but deteriorates to a route that scrambles up a gully on the northwest side of Turtlehead Peak. This must be a trail because someone marked the route with little paint spots along the way. There are numerous side trails where others have thought they found an easier way. Once on the ridge on the north side of Turtlehead I thought the tough part was over but the climb up to the peak was just a continuation of what I just came up, maybe not quite as steep. Once on top the view make the hike up worth it.

After coming down from Turtlehead Peak I still had time so I headed up the Calico Tanks Trail. This is a cake walk of a trail with lots of hikers. At some points I thought they needed traffic lights installed to help in managing the crowd where the trail heads up a few narrow stairs or steps. The Calico Tanks Trail heads up to of coarse Calico Tank but continues about 100 yards further up to a saddle with great views over Calico Basin and Las Vegas. The hike in is among the red and white sand stones of Red Rock Canyon and makes for a very picturesque hike. This hike might be better in the spring when calico Tank has water in it. Also might make a good morning sunrise hike to be at the saddle to observe the event.

3rd time doing this one and it is a butt kicker for sure. The first mile lulls you in, but don't be fooled. it was breezy on the way up, then the wind really swept up on the peak and for the descent. I felt slow ascending, but I guess under 56 minutes is respectable. Two other couples on the summit and passed another two groups above the saddle... most people I've seen on this trail thus far. they've added signs for the beginning portion, which I find helpful.
I stayed way right for the final push to the saddle, even further right than the last time I did this. there was a small screw chute to negotiate, but I still enjoy the more direct path than the official trail, which goes way to the left and switchbacks into the saddle with a clear vantage point. I went down this way as it is less steep. once on the saddle, you could hug the cliff at right via climbing some initial rocks (I've come down this way the past two times), or choose any of several paths to the left.
on the peak, I was looking at the closest higher mountain directly to the north and was wondering if you could get there as an offshoot from this trail. maybe, with a lot of work. i didn't see any snow on charleston. I hope the forecast for a dry and warm winter for the southern US holds!

Off at 9:36am to 64 degrees, overcast and windy. The first mile serves as a warm up, taking you to the base of the climb. Not too much reprieve from then. Surprisingly, little to no wind on the summit, while the wind was gusting on the strip. I'll be sure to do this one every time I am in vegas. Bonus was sharing the summit with the cute female I passed just below the top.

I woke up this AM and decided to go for a hike. I got off at 11:09am to plenty of cloud cover. That persisted for most of the ascent, including a few drops of rain. I don't like the beginning of the trail, with the washes, but the climb up is a good, steep one. I had to stop several times, but did okay on not enough sleep and after a little workout yesterday. Just under an hour up. Stayed at the top for ten minutes, then headed back down. I took the path along the cliff edge going down, which was a more direct route and required a bit of hand use. Next time, I will go up that way, but it is not obvious from the saddle.

Trails always seem steeper to me going down than up. This is one of those where it falls into the category of not steep enough to use your hands regularly, but steep enough where it is not advisable to go too quickly (for me anyways). I also unwittingly took a different path down, as there seem to be a few up to the saddle.

Near the bottom of the draw, I came across a guy and girl heading up. They asked me how much further to the top and I pointed at the large rock face looming above, "there". We chatted for a minute or two, I told them the trail was going to get much steeper, that the easy part was the first mile and they hadnt gone half way yet (not quite true, but they weren't half way in time and elevation, which are the critical factors). Now, the guy wasn't in the best of shape, said the trail was difficult up to that point and each one of them only had a single bottle of water. I'm not one to tell people what to do, but did discuss their water and said to take it easy a couple times. There was still cloud cover at that point, but the skies cleared and it was sunny the rest of the hike back.

This week was my annual trip to Vegas for the annual Western Petroleum Marketers Association conference, which is a big deal in the oil industry. Basically all I have to do is make my nightly Trophy Wife appearances at the dinners, and my days are free to do whatever I want. Since I don't play well with the other oil industry wives (spas and extravagant shopping trips aren't my thing), I chose to hike both days.

I headed out to Red Rock Canyon first thing Monday morning. I'd been out here before, but had never really hiked any of the trails, so Turtlehead Peak was first on my list. I parked at the Sandstone Quarry parking lot and got started. The first mile or so was pretty easy with a steady, but fairly gradual incline. I saw some burros, and a lot of jackrabbits. After about a mile, the trail starts to get steeper and rockier. Trail signs gave way to green dots spray painted on the rocks. Close to the saddle, it appeared that I had two choices to reach the saddle--continue straight up while climbing over some rocks, or head up some switchbacks that approached the saddle from the left. Neither option looked more difficult than the other, so I chose the switchbacks. Once at the saddle, the trail continued up the backside of the peak. At this point, it was pretty much just choose whichever trail you wanted to follow to the top. Everything led to the same place, so it didn't matter. I stayed on the trails mostly to the left (east) as the looked a little smoother. This ended up bringing me to the summit slightly from the east, so I had to head west a couple hundred feet to get to the very top.

Just as I had reached the cairn at the summit, I said Hi to another woman who was standing next to it, and I started to look at the rocks out over the edge. There's a small outcropping about 20' below the summit that stuck out about 20', with some little paths that led down there. I had decided to climb down there, and was still chatting with the woman, when suddenly from the west an old (WWII era?) plane started flying towards us. Before either of us could really react, the plane flew RIGHT BY us, so close I could clearly see the pilot in the cockpit as if he had been standing right next to me. The other woman said "He was 10 feet away!!!" I replied, "Maybe more like 30 feet." Her answer was "He was closer than that. If you had already climbed down to those rocks, his wing would have hit you." And she was right. Suddenly I didn't feel like climbing down there anymore, so I took some pictures and headed back.

The hike back down was a little slippery below the saddle--lots of sand and loose gravel, but uneventful. By then, there were a lot of people headed up and I was glad to have beat the crowd. Fun little hike, and a good workout for only four and a half miles.

With very poor air quality in the valley today, we decided on something easy that wouldn't require any deep breathing. ;)

Ok, not really, but we figured this would be one of the last weekends this spring cool enough to enjoy such an exposed hike. There were far fewer people than we expected, so that was nice. Pleasant temperatures with a slight breeze. Stopped for lunch at the top, where we enjoyed watching the cliff swallows blast by. I had a really close encounter with a leopard lizard - always amazing! The only bad thing about this hike is that the descent is the worst part, with a shallow layer of very loose gravel and soil over bedrock, and no real trail.

The BLM has now put up a few half-heartedly placed signs at the top and bottom of the steep drainage portion of this "trail." They don't really provide much help, and you still have to resort to simply following whatever way you can figure to the saddle on the top ridge.

Scattered shrubs and cacti were flowering - creosote, indigo bush, senna, ratany, cliff rose, Mojave mound, beaver tail, and hedgehog. Redbuds are done and desert willow not going yet. The agaves are getting really close!

Continuing search for Ron Kirk. Today, my husband had to work, so I teamed up with 7 other folks who were out to help with the search. We spread out and climbed up the washes and ridges to the main ridge - further east than where my husband and I traversed last weekend. Nothing new found.

One of those hikes where you wish you'd started earlier, since there were a great number of extended photo stops, bouldering, and quite a bit of route-finding. In other words, just about perfect! :D

We started out on the typical route to Brownstone Canyon via Calico Hills/Calico Tank (will post a description some other day). We took off from the typical route to cut across the slick rock, in an attempt to cut time. As usual, the route is the route for a reason, and cutting cross-country (with plenty of unexpected manzanita thickets) only increased the time. After reaching Brownstone Canyon, we ran out of time to check out the petroglyphs and pictographs, in fact we ran out of time for anything other than getting back the shortest way we could figure. We followed an old road out of Brownstone Wash and up the back side of the Turtlehead ridge. After the road petered out, we continued up to a saddle in the ridgeline, cutting east along the ridgeline to one of the "trails" heading down from Turtlehead. As we headed down the steep canyon that is the trail, darkness began to fall - somewhat alarming since it's the type of descent with plenty of loose gravel just barely covering the bedrock :scared: . We thankfully made it off the steepest part just before full darkness arrived. Pulled out the headlamps, hiked out in the dark. We were amazed to find the car waiting for us in the lot without a ticket. :y:

So I thought this would be a nice "trail" after what I'd just been through in the canyon looking for Wilson Mt. peak. And it was, for the first mile & a half. Then my route finding skills were put to the test again (but thankfully not my phone finding skills again! :) ) Wow, what a climb! This was intense, and I loved it! It's only 2.5 miles up and the first mile & a half is fairly flat. 1000 ft a mile basically after that. All loose scree & rock, no real "trail", at least that I saw.

Once at the top, there was a register box. Just in case you're not winded enough from that climb, someone was kind enough to leave some cigarettes in the box. Gee, thanks, just what I needed. :oplz:

Great little march up 2000 ft peak, just outside of Vegas inside Red Rock Preserve. Took about 4 hours total. Lots of loose talus-type stuff near the top. Some class III climbing, nothing huge. Great day to go and great 360 views. Went with my 8 y/o son and 17 y/o cousin.
