Frigid morning in Moab, decided to start with Grandstaff Canyon; ice hadn't even started to melt by the time I got to the empty TH. Everything was frozen and there were a couple of ice patches to work around on the trail, but it was pretty. The first rays of sunlight that reached the ground hit a frosty tree, which made it look like it had glitter in it. Never seen anything like that before.

Morning Glory arch was pretty cool. Someone on a google review complained about how disappointingly small it was - it went half way up the canyon and is like 200 feet across, what in the world were they expecting?! But I digress.

Saw the first other human about a quarter mile after heading back down.

Decided to follow a trail up a side fork on the way back, which led into a pretty cool box canyon before petering out at a huge alcove. Was worth the detour, maybe.

Started seeing more hikers in the lower half.

After getting back to the parking lot, I headed to Island in the Sky via Potash Road, which was a lot of fun, especially after Thelma and Louise point. Some day I need to drive the White Rim road (partially closed last time I checked).

Did a little hike to the Upheaval Dome overlooks while I was there. Originally wanted to do the syncline loop, but it was much longer than I expected... Saw 3.7 on the map, but turns out that was only the northern leg.

Our first hike in Canyonlands National Park was on the Upheaval Dome overlook Trail. This is a short .8 mile hike to an overlook of upheaval dome. A little bit of elevation gain from the trail head but not terrible. The trail is marked and easy to follow. The first overlook is about .4 miles in but continuing on the trail another .4 you come to the second. Really windy day and at times you thought the wind would blow you over the edge. There are explanatory signs at the first overlook explaining what they think caused it, two trains of thought are, salt dome the other meteor.

Claire and I had half a day to do some exploring in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands. We made the drive in from Moab on a cloudy day and stopped at the visitor center. From there we headed over to Upheaval Dome and headed out to the two lookouts. It is a very cool geological feature. After that we stopped at some viewpoints as we worked our way south heading for Grandview Point. We made the easy one mile hike to the point and were in awe of Canyonlands. There is so much to explore in The Maze & Needles Districts. I wanted to see more! We returned to the jeep and had some lunch at the Buck Canyon overlook and then stopped by the iconic Mesa Arch. It was really cool seeing in person. Several people were around but it wasn't crowded. We got our pics and then headed back to Moab. We're planning on camping in Gooseneck State Park to break up the drive back to Phoenix. This was a nice day in Canyonlands but left me wanting more. A trip to Needles District is on the radar for later this year.

spent thursday at island in the sky district
planned for an easier day doing the shorter hikes and overlook trails
mesa arch:
short loop to a classic arch
great views east through the arch
whale rock:
short ascent to a high hump that looks kinda like a whale
good views of interesting terrain
upheaval dome overlook:
a decent hike with some ups and downs on a fun trail
went to the second overlook that had good views into the crater
hit the first overlook on the way back, but the second one was better and made for a more interesting hike
had lunch at green river overlook
grandview trail:
followed a long neck of land between two drop-offs to the east and west
best views of the day on both sides with some rocks to climb up on at the end
could have added a couple more little things, but with a big hike friday, we just hit a few more overlooks and headed back to moab
got a cuppa coffee for the drive to monticello
spent thursday and friday nights at the monticello inn
monticello = twilight zone
had dinner at the peace tree juice café
limited menu but pretty good food
a fun, relaxing day with a decent overview of island in the sky

So there is a mystery here, or at least a debate. Inside the Upheaval Dome is a crater. Was the crater formed by the Dome collapsing? Or did a meteor strike cause the crater? Geologists disagree. So therefore I felt it was my responsibility to settle this dispute. Of course I have no geological training, but I tend to be correct quite a bit -- at least in my own mind.

So up the trail we went. Pretty well marked, scenic, pinion and junipers, and sandstone out the wazzoo. Stopped off at the first overlook. Yep, just what I thought. But no need to jump to conclusions or into the crater either. Trudged on up to the second overlook. A fence here made sure there was mo jumping here either. Yep, more viewing led to more support for my original idea of what caused the crater. Rubbed my chin, which hadn't been shaved in over a week and that lent the required gravitas. Debate settled, no question.

The track now connected to this triplog is actually for the Syncline Loop hike and will be moved there when I get better internet connection. The track I posted is NOT for the shorter and much easier spur out to the Upheaval Dome overlook. Sorry for the error. I only realized it when I read the entire description.

The Syncline Loop is an excellent but much more difficult hike around a fantastic geologic feature in Canyonlands National Park Island in the Sky District. We did a side trip to take advantage of the sun angle, but stayed on-trail the rest of the time. Good boulder scrambling just before reaching the lowest point in the hike. Highly recommend the hike.
