Couple of side quests on the way to Escalante. Lower Hackberry was on my radar from the last time I passed through, so we decided to check it out. Light flow in the creek made it enjoyable. The bartender in Page let us know on the way home that we should've done this barefoot. Walked about 2.5 miles in, decided the canyon wasn't going to get any more spectacular for awhile, and turned around. Really cool canyon, would like to check the rest out some time.

Got into Escalante, had a few hours of daylight left, so we decided to head up to Upper Calf Creek Falls. Trail isn't as well marked as its lower neighbor, quite steep for about a half mile, but didn't see anybody out there, which is a nice change of pace from Lower Calf Creek Falls. More views, too, since it starts from the canyon rim. The falls aren't quite as picturesque as the lower ones, but there's still a nice little lagoon, some cool alcoves, and you can access both the top and bottom of the falls. It's a worthy visit if you've already seen the lower falls.

Flowing for at least 2.5 miles. Enough water that you have to get your feet wet.

Stop number eleventeen on our weeklong utadventureh was a really pleasant and enjoyable walk along lower Hackberry Canyon. The light flow of water here really added to the experience. We chatted with a couple of Hayduke thru-hikers and managed to find a couple extra beers in the cooler to donate to them along with a gallon of clean drinking water. (We topped off our supply at the 24hr spigot at the Paria contact station later in the day).

I'm not sure I could drive past here again without stopping. It's that nice. At our turnaround point we could smell the very strong scent of rotting flesh. Hiker reports online indicated there were a couple dead cows in the canyon and while we didn't find one we were obviously not too far away.

Back at the trailhead we had a really interesting and educational discussion with a guy on horseback who we learned was the rancher with the grazing lease in the area. His family has been ranching here for generations. This winter presented conditions he said they had never experienced before. They lost three cows to quicksand in Lower Hackberry, an unprecedented occurrence in that drainage.

He also informed of us some dinosaur prints that we had missed along our route (another good reason to check it out again). More interestingly, he was completely befuddled at why we would be out there hiking just for the experience and enjoyment of it all. "Why would somebody from Phoenix come all the way to Hackberry just to walk through it!?"

Back in Hackberry Canyon again! This time we went a bit further up than we had been before. There were hundreds of little frogs and we hoped to see other wild life but this trip there was none.We saw no one else which was good.

We hiked up to the dinosaur tracks in this canyon in early March of this year and decided to come back and see what it was like in September. And boy were we not disappointed with what we saw, Just after where the water starts to appear we saw a large Garter snake but it did not stay for a photo, also further up we saw a Tarantula on a stone in the middle of the water and it was gone by the time we came back down. We had to cut short the hike as the rain was forcast for the afternoon and the dark clouds were starting to gather. We wanted to get down Cottonwood Canyon road while it was still dry, about half way down the road I saw some Pronghorn Antelope. All this wildlife on the first days hiking of our vacation

This was "part two" of a weekend trip. Loved this canyon and have been anxious to get to it for almost a year. It was as beautiful as I had imagined it would be. We walked a few miles back into his narrow canyon through a few inches of water on hard packed sand. This was pure eye candy! Thanks PageRob for setting the weekend up and taking a few of us into your backyard.
