Saturday's exploratory drive on the Cherry Creek Road FR203 ended with me taking a short hike to these Salado Cliff Dwellings. A friend from church, Steve, who had been on this road many years ago, was kind enough to take me along for the ride.

Mile markers indicated our progress for the first 20 miles. It felt like driving on the Peralta Road FR77. The next three miles were not so friendly. Steve did an excellent job of maneuvering through all the rough spots.

We searched for the access to many of the dwellings located along the way. Coon Creek was first. We did not hike there but now I know where to start when ! am able to return some time in the future. We stopped briefly at the parking lot for the Devils Chasm. There were two hikers ready to begin the ascent.

We drove a little farther to a staging area for Cooper Forks Canyon and Pueblo. That is as far as we went. There were two more hikers going to the Pueblo Dwellings and a couple in an ATV who continued to drive farther to the north. They caught up to us on the return drive with news that the road had been closed short of reaching Young, AZ.

On our way back we took the side road west towards Bull Canyon. There was a pull-off for the access to the hike out to the Nordhoff-Hope Cave Dwellings. I followed the fence line to below the dwellings. I got a little off trail when I followed a game trail. It doesn't seem to have been used recently. Lots of vegetation to navigate around, especially if you get off-trail.

Steve had stayed back at the parking area so I did not spend too much time at the site. Next time I will take time to explore.

I was very appreciative for this first excursion along the Cherry Creek Road.

Decided to spend New Year’s Day in the Anchas given the crowds in the Supes & Sedona. We didn’t see anyone hiking, but did see people camping along the road. Honestly, this “hike” brutal for me. Basically, we would just follow the path(s) that looked the least painful to navigate. You are on a steep slope, heading sideways towards the dwellings; there is a ton of scree, catclaw, and various cacti everywhere waiting to zap you. It was super nerve wracking for me because I was fearful of pace planting into a cacti. (I somehow even managed to bushwhack a chunk of my left eyebrow completely off :pout: ) James was extremely patient as I moved very slowly and cautiously; it felt like the longest mile ever, lol. We finally reached the first set of dwellings & the climb to get up there was nuts. :scared: It was about 50 feet of vertical climbing with questionable hand/foot holes AND an active bee hive you had to scramble directly over. James tackled it first while I tried to calm myself down with a white claw. (My first attempt, I was spooked by the bees). James said it was amazing up there and I didn’t bushwhack through hell to not see them, so thankfully he helped me up and I got to experience them as well. The dwellings were beautiful and the views were absolutely stunning! I particularly enjoyed the ledge that offered the view into the dwellings. After savoring the scenery for a while, we had to get back down. James went first and informed me that the beehive was agitated and that I’d need to move as quickly as possible getting down without panicking. Somehow this was achieved (with his assistance) and we didn’t get stung! :y: We traveled further down and saw additional dwellings that looked almost impossible to get to. We were actually able to get in there by finding an alternate route around that put us on the correct level. We enjoyed the views, had some snacks and then ultimately headed back the {awful} way we came. Although not a long hike, it was very mentally draining for me and I was happy when we finished. We popped over to camp grasshopper to set up for the night. The campsite was decent, although a bit windy and rocky. It got cold FAST at night and despite having a {responsible} fire, we were inside the tent, in sleeping bags somewhere around 7pm. It was difficult to get warm even with two sleeping bags, multiple layers and hot hands. Sunset and sunrise were very pretty and we got some rest for the next day’s adventures.

I'm not 100% sure how to use this site yet but here is my attempt at posting pictures and a trip-log.
This was my second venture into the southern Sierra Ancha mountains, and involved a partial on trail loop
and partial "shortcut" which is always a mistake.
Coon creek is beautiful and really has some great views and shows the ruggedness of these mountains,
and takes you through multiple different types of terrain as you dip down toward the creek bed and
climb to the rim.
The Nordhoff-hope ruins are impressive in how many rooms you can find, but leave you with plenty of
cactus needles and catclaw scratches as souvenirs. They are very exposed and do not have as many
standing walls as I had hoped, but were still amazing.

A weekend in paradise!

Arrived at the our 5 star Air BNB late Friday night and slept in luxury which led to a fresh early start.
This was my first time in this area and I was in awe of how beautiful and rugged the terrain looks as we descended down to upper Coon Creek spring.
Rather vague cow paths and a bit of bushwhacking with steep gain after crossing the creek and heading up #124 just as the description states which at the time of the hike I had no idea someone had done a portion of this specific route/agenda before.

Even in the morning the sun exposure was a bit rough until reaching the shaded forest immediately after crossing a side canyon which at that point most of the climb was already over with.

Saw a shiny new 4Runner at the remote TH and left them some fruit snacks because I figured they would enjoy a sugary treat.
Not a cloud in the sky and not much wind made for such a surprisingly warm day, 82oz of water was packed but complete lack of shade during high sun seemed to drain us all.

The remnants of the ancient civilization housing was amazing as expected and would love to spend some more time climbing around and inspecting other areas of interest nearby.

We had agreed about the idea of not wanting to do an out and back throughout the day and were willing to take on the challenge of taking it off trail in the Anchas.
Again the sun exposure was an issue and it just felt downright hot as we descended and fought through some gnarly vegetation.
Cliffed out the Coon canyon edge but continued downstream and it was that point I was literally praying we would find surface water near the lower spring.

Caught a glimpse of slick rock and saw what I was hoping was water and not a crude mirage and after a few more minutes we were splashing around in a cool bounty of much needed H2O.

With relief we took a much needed break in the cool shade, filtered and loaded our bottles and marched up and out back towards home.
After that it was more of them same going up and down through some rough land but after many scratches and pricks we finally made it back to our homestead.

We had company over at the house Saturday night as we were joined by two bearded beer beasts and a legendary schnauzer.

Just a quick little jaunt to this interesting and unique little site. I don’t think there is a shortage of pictures for it, so no need to post any, but it’s definitely worth the trip. In fact, I may go back and explore a little more closely.

Here’s yet another old, but not too old, hiking journal from Bud. We, 4 hikers from the Friends Hiking Club, were doing a pre-hike for an upcoming Coon Spring Trail #124 hike. Along the way we decided to see if we could find nearby ruins that one of us had heard of. Sure enough we found a coral off of Nf-203a which was supposedly near the ruins. Today, thanks to the CannondaleKid (aka Mark), I found out that the ruins are the Nordhoff-Hope Cliff Dwellings.

More than meets the eye here at first glance. Faces in a southern direction, catches full sun and general wind from south. Perhaps partial reason for it being in such sad shape.

I did this hike to the Nordhoff-Hope Cliff Dwellings along with a hike to Coon Creek Ruins on the same day. To get to the Nordhoff-Hope ruins take 188 out of Globe to 288. Follow 288 to Cherry Creek Road (FR203). Follow FR 203 past the first water crossing up the hill to FR 203A. FR 203A leads too the Bull Canyon TH, but you'll want to park at a corral you will see .8 miles South of the TH. FR 203A is narrow, has a bit of exposure, and requires a high clearance vehicle at times, otherwise its pretty smooth. I had a 4WD. The TH and end of the road is 5.5 miles in. Once at the corral simply follow the fence line West until you pick up the trail to the ruins, only 3/4 of a mile in. If you happen to find a small pair of bushnell 8 x 25 binoculars I'd like them back

A fun hike to see some ruins with my family. I'm going to venture to guess that my girls (ages 6 and 8 ) might be the youngest to see such ruins in quite a while. They weren't fans of the prickly pear, but they were real troopers! :) I am so proud of them!!!

Greg Joel and myself decided to do a double this day, we started with the Nordhoff-Hope site and finished with the Coon Creek dwelling.A good pair to visit in the same day since they are practically within sight of each other. We took the 4-runner up the mountain (cool and windy) Our goal was not only to visit the sight but access the penthouse suite at the sight. In reading other posts it seemed obvious that it was not climbable (at least not safely) so (here's your first hint) we decided to do it the way the indians would have. There is one more hint in one of the photos. It was still a little nerve racking accessing the ruins. While the ruins themselves were not the best in the area, the view gets my vote for the "best view from a cliff dwelling" I know everyone has a different comfort level when climbing rocks but even when we accessed the top dwelling we didnt see any path that a sane person would try to access free climbing. As far as the upper dwelling the photos will tell most of the story, no connecting caves, just a half moon alcove in the cliff. The one disappointment at this site was the quantity of graffiti in the upper dwelling. I looked around and the only art was a good 500 years away from being called anything but graffiti. the oldest date we saw was 1945, no dates after HAZ was started, I think this site attracts good people. All the walls on the site were built without mortar of any kind, unlike the other ruins in the area, most of the walls along the base of the cliff have fallen over, the original site appears to be larger than ones first impression. Once you start deciphering the rock piles it becomes more clear. It was easier to see from a perch up on the cliff side where you could see the outlines of the ruins. I accessed the room that Bart01 climbed to awhile back (not too technical freeclimbing). on this ascent "NO BEES WERE HARMED" BTW Bart01 I took a photo while hanging off the cliff below the ruin of what I believe is a ringtail cat perch. there was scat and pieces of honeycomb lying about. I think you might have your revenge. I also snapped a few pic of cactus flowers on the same cliff, I'm starting to make a habit of taking pics with one hand on the camera and the other hangin onto cliff sides (might end up with this on my headstone) Joel rousted a Rattler in rock pile , but we were never able to put eyes on it. We had a few humming birds flying around and they even visited us on the upper ruin. I also witnessed a falcon chasing a raven that it eventually ran to ground (I was not close enough to view the gruesome details) almost forgot we saw a spot inside a fallen down ruin where someone or something was digging into the floor (maybe a bear) hopefully not someone digging for artifacts. note: I saw the same type of dig in one of the rooms at coon creek ruins later that day??? Great tip , well worth the visit, did I mention great views?? well if I didn't GREAT VIEWS!!!

After getting through the Coon Spring Trail hike with a gimpy back, we got the "trailhead" for this short hike and my back still felt ok. It had tightened up just a little bit during the short ride over, but I knew I could handle it. When we arrived, there was already a black Toyota SUV parked there.

We followed the GPS track I downloaded from HAZ, which basically follows the wire fence from the corral. After a while, you can see the trail. There is an actual trail, by wilderness standards. It's pretty faint, but it definitely is there. On our way out we scaled our way down from one of the ruins and it became obvious very quickly how much of a difference it makes when there is no trail. As you approach the ruins the hillside gets steeper and full of loose rock, prickly pears and century plants. Having even a faint trail in this area was a blessing.

When we got to the ruins we met the people who came in the Toyota. It was fellow HAZers Johnnie, glutz (Greg) and Joel. They had already explored most of the ruins and had even found a way to get to the upper rooms. I was lucky to get as far as I did today with my back, so trying to climb up the vertical, crumbly walls was NOT on my itinerary.

Thankfully, the bee hive written about in previous triplogs seems to be no longer. Johnnie said that he saw what looked to be ringtail droppings and a bit of blackened honeycomb in one upper room. So it looks like the ringtail had a nice meal and helped the hikers out. Johnnie and Greg said that they saw a couple rattlers but thankfully we didn't run into them, either.

The views from here over Coon Creek and all the green were amazing. It's a huge contrast to the layered sandstone and red rock you see along most of the trails. After checking all the lower ruins, we bushwhacked our way down to the trail, which for me was even harder than usual. Bringing both my hiking poles was definitely the right move today. Perfect day for hiking and it was really nice to get this side trip in and check out these ruins.

We knew the weather would be less than ideal, but when bart01 graciously offered to risk his truck, I didn't expect conditions to change quite as suddenly (or frequently) as they did. Despite that, it was a great day to be out. There's no way to describe the beauty of the wind-blown snow or the delicious bite of the breeze. Even the mud didn't seem bad, and it wasn't compared to what came next. The bees left us alone, but the slippery conditions dissuaded me from venturing up the crack for a better look.

I've been meaning to get back here after last years bee attack had me escaping with one blurry picture 30+ stings a broken pair of sunglasses and a broken gps. :o This was a warm up hike for a day of exploring the Cherry Creek side of the Ancha. Got back on Friday and initially the weather looked like rain, but changed to forecast of snow. Alex had not been here so we parked by the corral and headed for the dwellings. The clouds were low and a mix of snow and rain started to fall during our traverse to the dwellings. I made this a little difficult by not going to the fence and following it (which made the trip back much nicer :-k I have to say the weather made pictures difficult as it was raining and snowing pretty hard by the time we got there. We toured the area which is a lot bigger site than I realized due to my previous hasty retreat. Main ledge was innaccessible safely due to snow, ice, and water accumulation, but I was able to walk up to the base of the cliff(where I was stung last year) and climb up to the room that has a small opening on the edge. :) having not read the description in a while I thought this was the one that had a room inside or connected to another room. I was wrong, just a small room. I hope to get back during a dry time of the year to see the larger balcony as there is some modern rock art in the back of room 17. According to SAP "hunter-aims-at-deer" "deer-gores-hunter". The hike was the foreshadowing of all the weather conditions we got to see on this day. Great to hike with Alex again.

After exploring the Coon Creek Ruins it was time to gain some elevation along FR#203A until well above Coon Creek for our hike to the Nordhoff-Hope Cliff Dwellings. It's a steep climb but the road was in pretty good shape so the Pathfinder took it with ease. From the trail head it was just a matter of following the fenceline until the reaching the cliff dwellings. Ok, so it wasn't just a walk in the park... the closer we got the steeper the angle and the less sure we were of our footing.

When we arrived we found the most interesting part of the dwellings was out of our reach and/or past our climbing abilities so we had to be satisfied with exploring the ruins along the base of the cliffs. After checking out the various walls nearest the main cliff dwelling we continued farther to make sure we didn't miss anything. We looked up a ravine to see if there may have been an easy way up to the dwellings but no joy there. On the return we stayed as close to the cliff base as possible until we hit the last of the stacked rock walls. Just before the last one there was another deeper ravine that may have led to a path to the top. Unfortunately it was so overgrown we didn't attempt to find out. After the taking a few photos at the last remaining wall we headed back down to reconnect with the trail. It turned out the best way to get back down was to glissade down the loose rock and gravel. With all the bits of grass and other bits that would have gotten into shoes it was nice being in Teva's.

Once back to the car we decided to find the closest place to park to the area above the dwellings and hike out to see what it looked like from above. I had set a waypoint at the dwellings so we drove along the road until we were less than .2 mile away when we got out and set out for the edge of the cliffs. The going was relatively easy with only a few detours to avoid a few thorny thickets. When we were within a few hundred feet of the waypoint we came to a point where it looked like layer after layer of terraces, dropping down 3-6 feet from one to the next. We went down a few levels until the drops were enough to prevent us from easily continuing. At that point we took some photos before headed back out. One of the ravines I could see all the way down to the spot where we were less than an hour before. With more time and cooler weather I'd be willing to venture down the ravine from the top down. But for today we had more 4x4 paths we wanted to check out for unique photo opportunities. More than a few of the paths got so tight I wished we had the Samurai. Being more than a foot wider, the Pathfinder ended the day with more scratched surface than not. Oh well, I got it for 4-wheeling not for looks and it did just fine. The only casualty I found a few days later was what appeared to be a pincushion thorn that had pierced the sidewall of a tire. Not willing to replace it that quickly, I had it patched so we'll see how it turns out. Still it was a very worthwhile day for adventure.

One of the weirdest things on the day was the temperatures. Even as late as 11 am at Coon Creek ruins (around 2000') it was only 77 degrees, but as we drove up toward Nordhoff-Hope the temp kept rising until it was 105 at the top. All I could think of was an easterly wind blowing hot air up and over the top of the summit. Then as we drove back down on Cherry Creek Road the temps dropped into the upper 90's, continuing to baffle us. By time we were back to Mesa it was the usual 103-105. While Tracey wasn't exactly enthused with the high temps when hiking, it seemed hardly noticeable to me.

See my more complete Sierra Ancha Bees generic, but an fyi for anyone going to this site there is new guard of this ancient site. That's right Bees. They have decided to move in an opening underneath the outlying room built into a crack. This is the first room coming from the trail. I let Tonto National Forest know and didn't expect them to do anything other than note it as an advisory, but they had someone call me back who is in charge of that area who requested more specific information and location. Partly, because they had an employee have a similar incident a while back requiring medical attention. They probably will not do anything because the frequency of visits are minimal compared to ie. Pueblo Canyon. FYI they were aggressive and it happened almost immediately after taking a picture. The sound? Vibration? or combination may have set them off.

Seventeen gallons of gas to hike a total of 2 miles for the day and it was worth it! :D

My sincere thanks to our Randal Schulhauser for joining me today and for doing all the research and previous scouting (April-June'07) to allow me to finally visit this ancient (~800 year old) and seldom visited Sierra Ancha Wilderness Salado Cliff Dwelling site. Hope you will consider reading my hike description and viewing my pic set with captions and posted GPS driving and hiking routes for further details on this most interesting site.

Our final five mile (+1670ft) drive-in on high clearance FR203A road is a real treat with scenic, short and long distance views in virtually all directions and just further justifies the driving time/distance to hike in this area.

Randal and I combined this short hike with his close-by HAZ "Coon Creek Ruins" hike to justify a full day out and we ended our day with good Mexican Food in Globe.

To justify the driving time/miles required to access this area from PHX, I do recommend a full day outing in this area to combine what we did above, or consider visiting this Nordhoff-Hope Cliff Dwelling along with a drive .8 miles further up FR203A to the "Bull Pass TH" with some exploring on one of two interesting hiking options going in from this TH:
Coon Spring TR#124.. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1028
Moody Point Ruins via Deer Creek TR#128.. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1901

Back on the trails after a little shut-down period.

Hank and I took the side trip to the Nordhoff-Hope Site V:1:170 off FR203A near the Bull Pass TH (think Hank may be doing a hike description). Hank posted the GPS route => http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?GPS=9025&M=3

Bee sting almost ruined it :( (ha ha!), but thankfully a Benadryl took the edge off.

Next stop, Coon Creek Ruins... :)

Revisited the Nordhoff-Hope Ruins with Mike Mattes on an early morning hike. Combined this with a hike to Workman Creek Falls later in the day.
