We were excited to do a lollipop loop from Kelsey springs TH south to Winter Cabin, then north up hog hill, across Dorsey springs trail, and back up the north-most half of Kelsey springs, but after Babes Hole the trail all but disappears. We kept at it using our gps to trail find, but once hitting the rim of the canyon, the trail became impossible to find, and the scrub oak absolutely unbearable. Frustrated and scratched up, we decided to take a break before turning back, but after our snack reassessed the map and decided to hike “the trail of our soul” rather than the marked trail on the map, and headed a half mile south along the canyon wall to Dorsey springs. This was not hiking and was in fact quite dangerous as it appears there have been some recent rock slides and the terrain was quite steep. We bushwhacked along a faint game trail and eventually made it back into the pines where we located the Dorsey spring. There’s a great campsite there, and the Dorsey springs trail looked to be in much better conditions. We camped for the night and took the Dorsey springs trail east the next morning, turned north on 538e and hiked back along the road to the Subi at Kelsey springs TH.

Definitely not the hike we planned for, as we were hoping to easily make it to the winter cabin. Next time we will head south down Dorsey springs and hog hill trails to attempt to find the cabin, and bring a machete for the scrub. This Kelsey springs trail needs a TON of work/maintenance. We are experienced backpackers and hikers and this was doable but actually quite unreasonable and frustrating.

We did some birding and enjoyed the wildflowers. Babes hole spring is flowing nicely, Kelsey spring is very very low flow, and Dorsey is dry. We carried 19 liters of water (3 ppl) and were glad we brought the extra.

Temps were beautiful in the low 50s at night.

The road:
Forest Road 538 up to FR 538E would have been passable even with my Toyota Corolla. The first part of 538E from 538 to the intersection at 538G did require high clearance but didn’t really require four-wheel-drive. The intersection of 538G and 538E is a good place to stop for this loop. Although I only walked the roads from here to both trailheads, Kelsey and Dorsey, both 538E and 538G were passible with high clearance, and no need for 4x4.

The hike:
I slept in my car overnight in order to get a 5:15 AM start, doing the loop counterclockwise. It took me about a half hour of road walking on 538G to get the Kelsey trailhead. This was practical, since I was walking the complete loop. There is plenty of parking at the trailhead.

It turns out the counterclockwise loop is the way to go. The trail drops pretty steeply from the Kelsey TH, and the climb back up Hog Hill is gentle. There is decent camping in the vicinity of Kelsey Spring. All the springs had warnings to camp at least 200’ away, which was not an onerous requirement.

There was old bear scat in the vicinity of Babe’s Hole Spring, and a lot of mole activity as well.

The Little LO (LO means Lookout, according to the Forest Service Map) trail is pretty steep, but always a good quality trail. From the bottom of the canyon, I turned right up the canyon a bit for some good pictures. There is poison ivy in the vicinity of Geronimo Spring.

The Kelsey Trail is challenging at times. The north-south section from Babe’s Hole Spring through Dorsey Spring , down to where it turns east toward Winter Spring can be very ambiguous. Pay close attention to the blazes on the trees and you will do fine. There is about a mile of trail in the east-west section north of Winter Cabin where the trail is very overgrown with scrub oak. You will want to have long sleeves and long pants when going through this section. I sent a note to the Forest Service. Perhaps they can do something.

It is surprising to find Winter Cabin within the wilderness boundary. I guess it is old enough that it doesn’t disqualify the area for wilderness.

The Hog Hill trail is the remains of an old road, but it feels more like a wide trail than a road.

Fauna:
I encountered two bull elk just after starting out, but not too much interesting after that.
There was lots of elk scat and prints along the Kelsey trail north of Winter Cabin.
I heard woodpeckers on the Little LO trail.
I was insulted repeatedly by a Stellar’s Jay on the Hog Hill section.

Great canyon. I found the boulder field entrance a little longer and more challenge than described. Even though the rappels are relatively short they are still fun great place to practice awkward starts. The rappel section was dry and most anchors were in decent shape. We were trying to beat a storm that was rolling in. With that said if any one goes down there you might want to replace some webbing it's starting to dry out. Lastly I made a rookie error on the first rappel and ending up leaving a rope. :(

A fun and relatively straightforward canyon with a surprisingly pretty narrows section. Started at Kelsey TH with an easy hike down the trail, followed by a short section of rock-hopping that suddenly drops off into a series of decent rappels and down-climbs. Loved the springs on the hike out. A good day to be in a canyon with great friends. :D

There always seems to be a song randomly stuck in my head while in a canyon, this weekend was no exception:

My wife and I are relatively new to canyoneering and this was our first adventure out with just us. We had a great time. There was a fair amount of bushwhacking down the wash before getting to the slot canyon, which was beautiful if a bit short. Rappels were all anchored off trees, that are well described on this site by others.

We nearly decided to drive home on Monday without doing a canyon, then a friend from Flagstaff showed up in camp and we had to commit. Our friend had been sick and we had just done a long day in Voodoo somBabe's Hole seemed like a great plan - and it was! Joel and I had done this canyon the year before so we knew it was straight forward, however I forgot how fun this short gem can be! We took some time showing our friend some of our techniques: releasable rigging and lowering in case rope fed out is not enough or someone runs into problems, and bag stuffing. I was surprised by the difficulty of the downclimbs and also surprised that I didn't need help in some of the spots! Nice, easy day!

After doing Bill Williams Mt. I decided to drive on over to the Kelsey Springs TH to see if the spot was open to camp for the night and get ready to do my first solo technical canyon the next day. The drive in on FR 538 was great as I spotted two deer on up a hill who stayed put long enough for me to get a couple pictures of them. Then the turn towards the actual TH proved to be a fun rudded road with a few mud holes for the Jeep to play in. I got to the TH before 4pm with nobody around and a nice fire pit already there so I found my campspot for the night. The view from up here of Sycamore Canyon was fantastic and to the NW you could see Bill Williams Mt. where I had just come from, perfect.

As the cold morning came I gathered everything up and headed on down the Kelsey Spring trail to get to the entry point of Babes Hole Spring Canyon. On the way down to Kelsey Spring I passed a few great campspots that I will keep in mind for future outings that would require a short 10 minute hike to get to. Got to the canyon drop in point in 20 minutes or so and started rock hopping with the nice spring water flowing in 2 spots. It was an interesting start as you rock hop you just wouldn't expect the canyon to open up and drop off the way it does. Once I got to the technical drop in I was amazed by the views from up here.

I set up the first rappel to drop right into the narrows which was a nice bowl shaped descent into a small pool big enough to just get your feet wet. The second rappel is at the base of this and was one of the sweetest parts of the canyon as you go through a narrow channel in the rock and then drop 40ft or so. I stopped several times to enjoy the views behind me while on rope. The canyon is pretty solid and drops off several times which makes it a solid contender in my mind for those wanting to do a shorter canyon that doesn't involve route finding or too much effort to get to other than the drive in.

I managed to only get my feet wet until the exit where you go under a large boulder and into a knee high pool. But even being cold, it was nice that it was crystal clear water and had no funky smell to it at all. The sunlight was waiting for me at the intersect of Little Lo Spring Canyon where I checked out the bottom portion and enjoyed the still clear pool leading you off into the narrows.

Didn't spend too much time in the bottom of Little Lo as I figured I would just see it when I finally do that canyon one day. Turned around and went to the exit and into Sycamore Canyon. The trail is right there and very steep at the bottom which will get your legs burning and up to the halfway point in no time. The light breeze on the way back up was perfect and again I couldn't have asked for a better day and trek to do. I ended up doing 5 rappels as the one spot I could have downclimbed was a little wet and I didn't want to risk anything. Nice solid natural anchor points at every spot you would need to rappel. I really enjoyed this canyon and think it is a nice little gem and a gem of an area for sure overall.

There were four of us, all somewhat experienced in canyoneering, on this trip. I am noting that so that others may be able to judge the amount of time needed for this canyon adventure.

This is a good intro canyon for the area. The technical part is fairly short and easy. The narrows were pretty.

When we hit Little LO Canyon it started to rain. I couldn't be bothered to put on my rain jacket.

Before heading up the trail, we explored the area around Sycamore Canyon. We found an apple tree near Geronimo Spring and a few of us had a snack.

On the way up, Josh and I foraged for mushrooms. We settled on a good collection of Puff Balls to have with dinner. No one else would join us, which I suppose was sensible since neither of us had foraged before. I guess all worked out fine as we're still alive :sl:

We camped near Voodoo and Sunburst. It rained almost all night, keeping me up...

The drive to the Kelsey Springs TH is pretty straight forward, takes about 40-50 min of dirt roading w one short and slow section not suited for cars.

The hike down is quick and easy until you hit the right hand turn into the boulder filled drainage ... all volcanic rock hopping which becomes LONG, SLOW and TEDIOUS. Plan on a full hour of rock hopping before you hit the sandstone goodies.

You can skip the keeper pot by using a small pine tree (locate a strap web and ring). There were no keeper pot hole issues by doing this.

We did have some rattlesnakes to wrestle with on our way down the first rap, very entertaining. We could not get them to move. They sat coiled below our rope uncomfortably close. We refused to throw rocks at them out of respect, beautiful wildlife encounter. We dropped a few coils of rope directly on top of the large Black Tail. It did not move or rattle ... hmmm ... Now What?? We spent some time looking for an alternate entry, no luck. Ledgy and edgy with no anchor options. Going back to the small Pinion Pine tree, we find a second Black Tail sitting directly on our rap landing point. This one much more interested in sending out his warning rattle. Dropping a few coils of rope onto these snakes for about 10-15 minutes, they finally move over, by a whopping 10ft. Uncomfortably CLOSE and out of options we nearly decide that these snakes are gong to send us back up the boulder field to our car ... we decide to make the rappel while being scolded loudly by rattler #2. Scary.

If you go during the hot summer months, keep an eye out. I believe that these snakes have no way out of this short section of canyon. Snake Pit!!

Great little canyon ... another great Fall canyon as there is little or no water to deal with.

So apparently I didn't learn my lesson from the previous day's experience and I opted out of a bail out to roll back to Phoenix early with the girls. I stayed with the boys and did another canyon. They promised me this one would be easy and nothing like the prior day. Well, it was definitely not like the previous day, and the most of the rappels were easy with the exception of one. It was a 'nuisance rappel', and boy was it a nuisance!! I ended up whacking the pumpkin out of the SAME damn knee that I hit so hard the day before on another boulder. How I didn't break my knee cap is beyond me!

There was one part where we were trying to avoid the water too, and Scott climbed up this scary wall. He tells me "just grab here and walk across" - makes it look like a piece of cake. Well, I totally freaked!!! My shoes were slipping and it was pretty much a 90 degree slope about 15-20 feet down into the water or into the canyon wall, depending on how hard you fell. :o I panicked and froze and John had to come to my rescue. :scared: Yes, I was the damsel in distress! BIG TIME!!!! : queen : He talked me down and I rolled up my pants and walked through the water anyway. It came up to my butt and it was FREEZING cold, but it was WAY better than what they were trying to get me to attempt to do!!!!!

The hike out was my favorite part of the whole day! :) The trail was beautiful and it was a kick-ass workout! I think I will probably stick to hiking most of the time. Canyoneering will definitely be a good option to have as an alternative in the summer time, but I think I prefer my boring old hikes for now. :D

Cool canyon. Would be more scenic with flowing water, but dry makes for good chance to work on some low water techniques. Geronimo and Babes Hole Springs on the hike out are sooooo sweet.

Part 2 of the daily double.

All the action is in the last 500 ft from the junction of Little LO. Surprising how many rappels they fit in there, one after another.

After having an amazing time playing in the water slides of Little LO, we made the steep climb up the trail to Babe's Hole Spring (hmm, sounds naughty ;) ) and dropped back down that dry canyon on the other side of the ridge of the springs. The canyon starts off rather thick with loads of boulders, bushes, and tree fall to make for a rather slow going and uninteresting descent of the upper section. A side canyon from the springs comes in and the canyon is to flow off & on for a bit. After dropping more than half of the way back down to Little LO canyon the canyon finally narrowed up and got interesting. :GB: The canyon starts off with a mossy 20ft drop down to a bouldery ledge/chamber with a V-notch above another mossy & slick 35ft rappel which puts you down into some sweet narrows. :) That was followed quickly by another 20ft chute that was wet and best to just rappel followed by a slightly tricky short down climb. Just when we thought the canyon was almost done, we hit another 25ft drop from a tree quickly followed by another 35ft drop down another dry chute. Todd recommends a 150ft rope for this drop so I brought my 200ft rope since I didn't fully read Jaclyn's post recommending only a 100ft rope since the anchor on that drop has been extended out 20ft to reach just above the rappel. That final rappel was followed by a tricky 10ft down climb and then squeezing thru the Babe's Hole formed by a few large chockstone boulders before reaching the confluence with Little LO Canyon and once again making the steep sweaty climb back up the Little LO trail.

Time & mileage logged is just of our sidetrip from the springs down to the confluence and back up to the springs again... Hmm, I was having so much fun in the narrows of Babe's Hole that I forgot her name already. :sl:
