The strawberry crater loop hike is a short and easy Crater hike. The drive out wasn't too bad, but I don't think I would take a passenger car out there!

We had beautiful weather if a tad bit hot (late start when camping with teens!) , and we had the entire trail to ourselves. We saw no other people or cars other than a ranger doing some maintenance about a half mile from the trail head.

This was a nice, easy 1.9 mile hike. It is not 1 mile as indicated by the trailhead sign. The road in is high clearance when dry. Sign at the trailhead said to watch out for threatened Phacelia serrata (Cinders phacelia) and Penstemon clutei (Sunset Crater penstemon). I didn’t find either. I found a lot of scarlett gilia, which superficially looks like the penstemon. Not a lot of birds. Spotted several Pinyon Jays near the trailhead. As I finished up, I noticed at least two people on the summit that could be seen from the trailhead. They must have traveled off trail from some other direction, as there was no sign of another car at the trailhead.

This hike was hot and dry as it was 85F out. However, there was no other people in the trail, so that was glorious. The sign in register stated only 1 only couple had hiked it that day, Woo hoo! The road in was rough but not horrible. If you have high clearance, you will be fine. I wouldn't take a passenger car, though it would probably be able to make it. The rough sections weren't too long, thankfully, most of the road is easy.

We did this hike with 2 adults and 5 kids aged 5 years to 12 years. They were troopers despite the loose cinders and hot weather. It helped that the hike is not too long.

I really enjoy being able to hike up the cone. Versus just being able to look at sunset crater. Good times! :D

The designated trail says its 1 mile around the crater. I went to the top and back down, I had to back track about 1/2 mile to finish the loop.

It is a nice hike to the top of a volcano. It is not too hard of a hike, I took my children with me who are 4 and 2 and also my pregnant wife made it. The hardest part of the hike was the soft gravel, but besides that it is a great hike. It does not look like very many people get out to see this volcano, it takes some time to drive out to it.

Strawberry Crater is an extinct volcano located 26 miles north of Flagstaff on 89N. Take the first right onto FR546 just past mile marker 434. This road is okay for a car, but has some patches of rocks that a low car might not be able to clear. After about 4 miles, at the junction of FR779, go straight (this becomes 779). Go about 2 miles to the power lines and you will see the parking lot for Strawberry Crater/Strawberry Crater Wilderness. Follow the trail to the base of the volcano. The left fork takes you around the volcano to the east side where the blowout occurred. The right fork winds around to the western rim. The trails are black cinders. There are ruins located on the north rim, but no trail to get to them. Bouldering up the cinder slope is the only way to get to them. There is a crack in the rim in the northeast inside of the crater that will get you there. The ruins are stacked malpais boulders. Getting down can be treacherous with loose cinders and larger rocks that slide with each step. The views are fantastic from the top of the San Francisco Peaks, the lava fields and the Pained Desert to the north.
