Sunday morning low key hike. Got started early with cooler weather. Hazy and cloudy again at the start and then sunny after a bit. Started up the ridge first then started a figure 8. some sections of the trail on the west side are steep and loose, almost lost a footing a few times. Saw quite a few more trails to go back and do one day, but they're very short spurs.

the scenery at the top is better than I expect every time I go, even with the subpar lighting for today. not much traffic on the trails. Very laid back day, wrapped up pretty early and got lunch for the family.

Access was closed due to Salt River flooding. Extended the hike parking on the BUSH HWY. Fun day saw few others. High water level of debris was astonishing.

Chris invited me on this quick Christmas Eve hike along a couple trails at the Lower Salt River.

I've done the Coon Bluff Loop several times, but not the Salt River Trail which is a mostly flat trail that skirts Coon Bluff and then heads across the open desert towards Salt River Recreation.

A little chilly at the start, but once the sun came out, it was very pleasant.

An easy day out in the desert, with a flat out and back and then the up and down you get going on the Coon Bluffs.

On the trail heading back to the TH, we ran into the @cannondalekid who was biking the same trail going the opposite direction. It was a pleasure to meet you!

A nice way to spend Christmas Eve morning, out in the desert, getting a little exercise and breathing in that fresh air. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!

The conditions looked good, so I woke up early and hit the cliffs of Coon Bluff to catch a sunrise. It was a nice mix of pinks and oranges at the start, with a little yellow tossed in the closer it got to the actual sunrise.

I explored a little around the cliffs towards Phon D Sutton and then took the Loop path back to the parking area. My watch showed 3 miles, which is probably generous.

I am a repeat offended at this location, I cannot get enough of the views looking east when the clouds and sun decide to put on a show.

Lot's of little hikes lately, time to do one a little more challenging.

We decided to to a quick hike. We hadn't been to this general area yet, so we decided to give it a try.
Got there pretty close to sunrise, but we could see this area is heavily utilized, were worried about running into other folks on the hike, but it turned out we didn't meet anyone on the trail, although the parking lot had lots of horse trailers when we got back.

For the most part the trail is relatively easy to follow, but I don't think the trail GPS track follows the existing trail at this point in sections. We just decided to follow the marked trail, and we eventually ended up at the parking lot at the east side of the mountain, Pretty much the most western section of the hike, We did see a faint trail heading south, which is the direction we needed to go to loop around the mountain, so we followed that. Lost the trail a couple of times (GPS maps shows there are no trails in this area). The off-trail hiking wasn't for too long, and the desert made for easy hiking. Eventually we came out of a wash and onto a ridge (as we were hiking in the south direction). The ridge had a trail heading East, so we jumped onto this, and although we did manage to get off the trail once(not sure how!) we re-located the trail pretty quickly. The trail becomes more and more prominent as you continue East until you hit another parking lot. From the parking lot the trail even gets bigger, so no missing that! Followed the trail east to the trailhead.

Overall it was an okay hike, but the general area is heavily utilized, and you can see the highway and recreation areas for a good percentage of the hike, so you don't really get the out-and-about feeling on this hike. I think this area may be a good prospect for some night hikes, Not locked gates at night, and it seems many of the trails should be easy to follow.

I'll post the GPS track if you want to follow it, you should be on a trail for about 90% of the time.

With the Lower Salt River being one of the few areas still open, I went out to the cliffs to catch a sunrise. Richard wanted to get out and exercise his injured achilles tendon and I thought this would be a short with a little up way to do that.

Same as always, a short hike up from the base of the cliffs and a big view at the end. The trail is very defined now and starts just to the south of the base and goes up on several different paths. They both end up at a step up at the top. There are several vantage points that offer excellent views of the river and the eastern horizon.

The clouds abided and gave some very nice colors pre-dawn. The sun hide behind them for a while, but eventually made an appearance about 30 minutes past sunrise.

I wandered a little on the other side towards Phon D Sutton. The views to the west on the crest of the bluff provide some nice views of Red Mountain, Fountain Hills and the western horizon.

I will have to get in a more rigorous hike this holiday weekend to get in my much needed exercise, but this one is for the views, that is for sure.

Another sunrise hike up to the cliffs of Coon Bluff. I wanted to get out and get in a quick hike this morning and this one seemed to fit the bill.

No cars at the Coon Bluff lot when I arrived and it was just getting light out. The path up to the cliffs is getting very clear now. It used to be an almost bushwhack going up.

I explored the edge of the cliffs for a while and then started taking pictures. The clouds looked promising, but I thought they might be too low. The color show did finally arrive and it turned into a very nice sunrise. I saw a couple bands of horses crossing the river below right at sunrise.

After my picture taking, I hiked up the little hill and made a smaller loop up top before heading back down.

A great way to start the day.

Took the coon bluff loop to check out the sunrise - wish there'd been clouds and drama. Walked around along the river and saw some horses. Beautiful day with family.

Looking for something new and close to home so we opted for this loop. We both really enjoyed this hike. The ground was dry so little to no rain this morning. With the amount of trails in the area we’ll definitely return.

Quick hike with my daughter and 2 dogs. She expressed her hatred of hiking going up the trail but agreed to try it again on the way down. Coon Bluff Loop works magic for the semi-enthusiastic hiker.

Took my group of once a month Sunday hiker buddies on this loop based on the recommendation of @CannondaleKid from a few weeks ago. The guy who complained about the elevation gain from last time didn't show, but it was nice enough anyways.

The views of the Salt River and Red Mountain are great from the top of the bluff. I would come back here and poke around some more by myself on a lazy day. Only saw a couple of horseback riders and their truck/trailers at the parking lot. Started out in the mid 30's at around 7 and warmed up quite a bit with the sun.

Coon Bluff has long been a sunrise favorite of mine, but I have not been out there for a sunset. The ridgeline of the bluff offered a nice view of the western horizon so off I went.

I parked at the horse lot before you get to the campground and started up. The trail is really defined all the way across. In some places you can tell it’s an old Jeep road. Tons of horse hoof prints and horse poop all along show this is a popular trail for horses.

The up and down of this little hike is nice. I know everything looks flat on a map, but the little roller coaster action was a nice. My goal was to hike to the cliffs that overlooked the river and then work my way over to the western most ridge near the road to Phon D Sutton for sunset shot. I was surprised how deep the rift between the two main hills were. There’s a nice little mini-canyon in between.

The time was slipping by, so I decided to head back the same way I came in and find a spot with a clear line to the horizon. The lack of clouds and the relatively clear air made for a very subdued sunset, but I always enjoy watching it from the desert.

This trail is a nice little workout full of surprises. I will be back again and make the entire loop. It looks like the way back is along a wash, so I might have to make my own trail back as I really dislike hiking in the sand.

Mark and I were set to head to the Mazzies to check out a Swingset. An overnight low of 64 degrees made us consider a local hike instead. This little dandy was quite fun.

We started at the Phon D Sutton mid-mountain parking lot along the Bush Highway and proceeded west along the Coon Bluff Loop trail for a short distance. From there, we followed a loop Mark cobbled together from past hikes, which took us up and over most of the hills in the area while following a clockwise route. Not 10 minutes into the hike, I got my usual tumble and fall out of the way, stepping on what looked like a sturdy rock, only to have it work loose, and down I went onto my backside. Thankfully my water bladder was full and cushioned my fall, leaving me just a little embarrassed.

After dropping down into a wash that would connect us to the next hill, we ran into a snake wrangler from North Dakota, maybe down here to escape the cold front moving through that area. He wasn't having any luck. We surmised that the surprisingly cool weather may have had something to do with it.

We then hiked up and over the next hill down to the river, where we saw a couple of wild horses wading in the river before running into a couple of fishermen. Leaving the river and hiking up the next hill, we stopped for a few minutes on the ridge and watched folks on kayaks and paddle boards drifting down the river. As a group of paddle boarders passed by, a small group of wild horses set out across the river from the north. We stood and watched, letting a cool breeze wash over us. I was in no hurry to leave. It was just about perfect.

We headed down Coon Bluff towards the Coon Bluff recreation area before circling back and returning to the TH. Along the way we stopped at an old mine just up the hill. Nothing more than a big hole in the ground now.

The weather was about perfect. Nice and cool throughout. Maybe a tad humid, but no complaints here. It was a great day to be out.

Good seeing you again, Mark!

Gotta give props on the triplog Ray... I couldn't have said it better. :app:

When I read I was in no hurry to leave. It was just about perfect in your triplog, I must admit that particular spot was the perfect spot to set a spell, relax and take in the idyllic river scene.

Having visited that spot a dozen or more times over the last 6 months (usually on a workout hike) it didn't occur to me an extended break would have been appropriate... sorry about that Ray!

Still, it was a nice leisurely hike... I enjoyed the weather and the company.
Thanks again Ray!

Another high-noon start and again conditions were prefect, extremely low humidity and plenty of wind.
This time I hiked clockwise, adding a few detours along the way including down to the river. I checked throughly in the area of my previous rattlesnake encounter but no such luck this trip.

A close-to-home well-known trail is all Tracey wanted for today, so we just scanned the parking spots along Bush until we reached Coon Bluff Road intersection. We noted the gate was open, which made sense since Tonto opened up many of the sites as of today. That being the case, we figured there'd be plenty of vehicles farther in so we parked at the intersection.

The trail going toward Coon Bluff was VERY well beaten, a result of the months of folks walking out to the river when the gate was closed. We would pretty much stick to a trail most of the loop.

We were headed for the north end of the new metal fencing, which emanates from the parking area along Bush Highway (across from the Hawes - Saguaro Trail) all the way past Phon D Sutton to Coon Bluff.

Up at the top of the bluff we had a nice view of the river and surprisingly enough there were only three vehicles at the Coon Bluff Rec Site. I suppose just like the folks that it took 2 months for them to realize the Rec Sites were closed, it will take a while before they realize they are open again. I'm sure this weekend will bring them out in the droves. So... if we're going to do another close-to-home hike the next few days we'll have to be out around sunrise.

Anyway, shortly before reaching the metal fence by the Salt River we encountered a young rattlesnake stretched across the trail. I was just fast enough to take a photo as it turned to head for cover. And of course during the a slight delay while deciding to shoot a video I missed the part where it came toward me before heading into the brush.

Coiled up nicely off the trail, there's no longer need to worry is there? Except for Tracey there was. Sheesh! It's now 8 feet away so just walk right on by... like I just did without any further complaint from the rattler. Five minutes later on the return trip it gave sign of recognition of our passing.
Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (0:44 video)

No drama the rest of the hike, no wildlife, no hikers or snakes... to my chagrin and Tracey's delight.

My ankle injury has kept me off the trails for a while, but I needed to get out and hike something to keep my sanity. I decided to hike up to Coon Bluff for a sunrise.

The trail to the cliffs is really defined now. The last time I was up here, it was more of a bushwhack. There's an easy trail up at the base of the cliff to the left. I did not do the entire loop, but mainly stayed at the overlook. I could hear the horses but did not see any.

I arrived pre-dawn and hiked up. The clouds and Mother Nature cooperated and I was treated to a lovely sunrise. Me, Mr Sun, Mother Nature and a few 100 of my new bee friends were all I had up there. Lot's of bicyclists in the parking lot. Getting in their miles before the inferno started, no doubt.

I find out this coming week if it's more rehab or a surgery on the ankle. Either way, not hiking when you are used to hiking every week is an adjustment for sure.

After my appointment with the Ortho-Spine doc on Friday I was told verbally to moderate your activity... while in the same moment I swear I heard a silent admonishment to act your age. :stop:

Either way, that's gonna be a tough one for me. : rambo :
Ok, so today was just a quick loop of moderate activity.
