A stroll in the woods in which we saw a red-faced warbler (I'm guessing he was pretty embarrassed), Elden Spring with real water in it, Elden Homestead site, a child's grave (little John Elden), tiger swallowtail butterflies, and numerous lichens.

Now as to the child's grave: A sign giving details of the gruesome murder of the child is next to the grave. But as it turns out, that story is a myth, a fabrication, a big fat lie! I will include a link to an article detailing how a historian arrived at that conclusion:

Returned to this “TH” to do some gridding among a myriad of trails. Honestly, repeated a lot of the trails that I did yesterday just filled in some side trails that my wife didn’t feel like doing. Once again mainly stayed east of the TH. Noticed a trail sign near the Elden gravesite that Lower Oldham trail. Also noticed a similar trail sign when I hiked Elden earlier in the day. Surprised to find that this trail is not on HAZ. We’ll have to do something about that. :) Will need to return to do some more gridding.

Short afternoon hike with the wife. Directions to this “TH” are accurate and needed. Lot of twisty streets back there. Parking is very limited and I’m not sure what the home owners think of people parking in front of their house. But there is access to the trail that leads right to the Elden Environmental Study Area. Lot of short trails in the area, some of which are signed. Did most of the trails that were east of the entry point. We checked Elden Spring…a bare trickle, but you could see water moving, the homesite…though there was no evidence to my eye where the home might have been and the gravesite. Followed a solid single track for a short distance and then took a user a track that connected us back to the Pipeline trail. Took the Pipeline trail back to the entry point and our. Nice to get out with the wife. Saw a couple walking their dog, but otherwise had the area to ourself. Weather was awesome…in the 70’s. One gopher snake sighting.

Hey, look, I'm hiking again! Went with my Flagstaff pal. I had just been to the dentist to have two fillings, one on each side of lower jaw. Fun! We always have a lot of catching up to do. She chatted, while I responded with a lot of mumbling, slurring and drooling. She's a nurse. She handed me tissues.

Flagstaff has been having a lot of foggy days lately. It burned off long enough for us to do the hike.

I did okay despite my recent retirement from hiking. I guess I'm not retired after all. My feet didn't hurt (that has been the problem) and that's encouraging.

Just as we got back to her place the cold and the fog started in again. We were just in time!

Such a nice day, I went once around on the loop after doing Elden. Saw what at first I thought was a mule deer, but ended up being a fox. I think it was a fox, it didn't look enough like a coyote.

Once around the loop. No noticeable change in spring flow. Fierce wind, again. Even in late June it feels like the wind just won't die.

Flow is noticeably off from even 9 days ago. Still usable, and there is the tank to filter from. I expect things to decrease further before monsoon season. The small channel that is between the spring and the tank is drying out, and a nasty sludge remains where water once trickled.

My first visit to this area. Nice little trails, big boulders, surprisingly quiet despite being in Flagstaff. Not as crowded as Fatman's Loop, etc.

Twice around. Looks better in this area than on the wind blown Lookout Trail and Fatman's Loop. The oaks are further along and the seem healthier in general. Spotted the fire on Camp Navajo just before I finished up.

Flow was noticeably off from last time. Still flowing well, but not as heavy. It looked to be right around a gallon per minute, maybe a bit more. Water barely got past the trough and the ground is drying down stream.

Out enjoying the nice day. I didn't have the time to do what I really wanted, which was to go to Sedona and do something fun in the 80 degree weather, and I didn't feel well enough to do Elden again, though I feel better than yesterday on Elden, so I did this. As a result, I took my time and enjoyed the warm sun, the more or less warm air, and the scent of pine in the air. Only one loop, and I took my time to soak it in. Buds on the pines are swelling, and even though it will probably be close to 2 months before it gets really nice in Flagstaff, it is spring. I think town has had all the real moisture it will get before monsoon season, so it's gonna be a dry spring. It usually is.

It's such a nice day (for Flagstaff in late March) that I felt like getting out and doing this. I probably would have liked to have done Elden, but didn't want to again so soon. Did the same loop twice, as I did last week with Jake. The birds, and Robins especially, are going crazy on the south face of Elden.

With Jim. Went around twice. Very pleasant area, glad Jim "showed" it to me (I had been there as a kid).
