Enjoying vacation in Vegas, Val and I decided to wander over to the VOF and check things out. This was our first hike and it was a good one. The petroglyphs were everywhere!!! Got to the watering hole and I was tempted to go down for a few better photos. Val, in her feminine wisdom, convinced it wasn't worth the potential injury, so I chickened out.

Walked to the tank then a little further. The quiet that you experience was amazing. I would go back to just to sit and relax.

A nice hike with petroglyphs and cool rock formations. We missed the end of the trail and kept going a little further into the canyon.

This trip was designed to hit 100,000k on my Xterra..

In Las Vegas for a few days. Took trip out to Valley of Fire State Park to see the arches, petroglyphs, and wierd rock formations, and sweat some booze. Ton of petroglyphs in this wash. Climbed a bit above the tank, for a better view down canyon. Only saw maybe 40% of the park's attractions, and none of the "long" trails (Arches Trail, Pinnacles Loop or Prospect Trail). Gives me something to do next year.

Stop #2 on our picture-taking spin around the valley. It was pretty hot, but there were a lot of people here - a few I thought we might have to help, in spite of the very short hike.

Enjoyed the cruise among the fabulous petroglyph panels - great place. :D

Wonderful little hike that concludes at a canyon bowl with a small tank. Picturesque canyon in a wonderful state park.

My parents paid a visit this weekend, and I have my mother pick out some short hikes to go on. I would not characterize either of my parents as hikers, but what more enjoyable form of exercise can you possibly get? Besides, they had been in Oregon for several months of rain and were pleased to get outside in the sun.

We drove out to Valley of Fire and ate at the picnic tables near the trailhead. Antelope-tail ground squirrels looked on hopefully throughout our lunch, but no snacks from us. We took off down the trail/wash along with swarms of other visitors. One thing you can't expect on this hike is solitude, except maybe in the middle of the day during summer. Once we let a rock-throwing child ahead of us, we were able to enjoy some quality time with the many petroglyphs lining the wash. My husband even found one he decided looked like a giraffe.
Once we reached Mouse's Tank, it was quite full of water. We scrambled up around the tank for views beyond. Other hikers were spread over the rocks like so many leaves blown by the wind.
After sitting at a comfortable overlook while my mom read us the history/legend of "Mouse," we turned back to the car.

Nice weather, relaxed hike. Pretty good trip.
