Peak hike number two. This was my favorite of the two. A nice ridge climb, a wall, a fence, a road and a summit with views. The off trail was easy and not too steep once you got off the ridge. Bob decided to rock and roll on the way down but fortunately walked away with only bruises. Denny was on the fence a few times but finally made it over. We walked by the 4x4 group who said there was an abandoned F150 farther down. I was windy but still a nice day to hike.

Hike 2 we walked a road then the fun started at the turnoff. We climbed over or under the fence a few times to get to the other side. The hike was offtrail but only brushy in a few spots. The walls up top were pretty cool. Views from top were pretty sweet. The hike down I took a tumble. A stupid rook rolled underneath and I landed on my back. Weird though the only thing that hurt was my bicep which is bruised. The boys went elephant hunting while I licked my wounds and napped in the truck. Fun hike . Thanks for driving Wally and thanks for lunch Mr. February.

It's been on my list for a long time so I finally got it done.
Beautiful day, awesome scenery, couldn't have asked for better conditions.
I drove partway up into Millsite Canyon then hiked pretty much straight up to the summit, signed the log, took a few photos and a video and headed down to the south then looped west into Millsite and back along the trail/road.
I saw a Jeep group come through Millsite Canyon and stop for lunch near where I parked while I was on Hackberry. I caught up to them just after the last one closed the fence gate. Since they were going so slow (I mean turtle slow), they eventually moved over one-by-one and let me through. Thanks guys!

Wanted to go back to this one because I like it and it has been a long time since I was there. A group of us met up on the north side of the Tucson area and carpooled up for the hike. I enjoyed being a passenger for a change! Originally there were more signed up for this one, but various things whittled the final group to four. It was nice reminiscing about past hikes with Bob and Jackie, both of whom I hadn't seen in about 8 years, and to meet Demetri. We had a great time! :D

Hard to believe I hadn't been in the Superstitions since November 2012. I have always liked the drive up toward Rogers Trough, so it was really good to take in that awesome scenery again. We parked across the the road from the old jeep track you hike to get to the cutoff for the peak. I tried to get the track recorded on my new Garmin Oregon 450 gps, but I must have done something wrong as there was no track to save when I got back to the vehicle. But that's okay, since eventually I'll get the hang of it.

The photos that Hank and Brian recently posted fired me up even more to go (thanks for that nice new summit register Hank :)). I mentioned to Bob to look for the gate in the fence along the way, but we missed it on the way up and stayed on the left side until the wall, which we climbed over to get to the final push to the top. Either way works, but it was a little nicer hiking on the other side as we found out on the way down (went through the gate).

Those rock walls sections are pretty impressive! While we were taking our lunch break on top Bob and I were checking out the ridgeline from Hackberry over to Peak 4285, and we agreed that it looked reasonable. Bob has done some off trail exploring up Hewitt Ridge, and has gone over to 4285 from Byous Butte utilizing some of Hank's route from Camp Grasshopper. He said he really likes that section of the ridge.

After the hike, we drove up toward Rogers Trough as Bob wanted to check out a little of what he calls Rogers Trough Ridgeline, which sort of parallels Rogers Canyon on the south side. But we decided we were running late in the day and getting a little tired and called off any more exploring. So it was back down the road with those killer views, then a stop for ice cream at McDonald's in Florence, and back to Tucson.

.. CHRISTMAS EVE - 12/24/13 ..

For most Christmas and/or New Year holiday weeks between years 2005-2009 I much enjoyed camping and hiking within this FR172-Hewitt Canyon area at my "Camp Grasshopper" location under mighty Byous Butte- :next: http://hikearizona.com/photo=117282 . Since year 2010 to date and now a few years older with my seemingly thinning blood and less tolerance to winter cold, I've tried to keep a holiday tradition alive by at least enjoying one selected Christmas Eve Scenic Drive or Day Hike in this same general area.

This beautiful Christmas Eve Day with first a short drive in & around to pay my respects at my memorable FR172 "Camp Grasshopper" - Byous Butte location, Brian and I next chose this short and moderate off-trail hike to most enjoyable Hackberry Butte Summit at 4230ft. Not a Benchmark Peak, but one of the higher peaks in this area adjacent to Millsite Canyon, below the Woodbury and Rogers Trough THs with wonderful 360 degree summit near and distant views.

On our hike up the mostly easy to navigate ridge line we roused a large and very healthy pack of Javelina with tiny, little ones in tow :) We mostly missed the photo ops for this large family group, but the surprise viewing was very memorable.

This 4230ft butte summit also provided Brian another opportunity to snag some club points for his hobby and club membership in the worldwide SOTA (Summits On The Air) Ham Radio Organization. It was kind-of cool watching him unfold from his daypack, a major antenna :o and Ham Radio battery setup which also included his Morse Code (CW) equipment. Like a kid in a candy store he was as I watched him score contacts all over the USA (20+ in total) but Brian will share that detail in his triplog. I did get some cool pics of him in action on the summit :)

I also carried-up for those after, a new, larger summit log container with a new pen and extra summit sign-in paper. My Christmas Gift for Hackberry Butte 4230ft.

: rein : a relaxing and most enjoyable way for me to spend Christmas Eve Day 2013 : rein :

Hank asked me to do this trip with him after some cancelations and a no response. Hank has been a mountain goat lately and I have been fortunate enough to have been invited along. This trip was a great way to start out Christmas Eve. Hank and I got a reasonable start to the day no O Dark Thirty since we were close to town.

I got a nice tour of the area on our way in to the trailhead. I learned a bunch and enjoyed the company.

One additional exciting part of the trip for me is that this peak is listed on SOTA W7A/PN-048 http://www.sota.org.uk/ and has not been activated by a ham radio operator yet. I packed my HF gear up the hill set up my equipment while Hank did some exploring and on low power using batteries managed to talk to 26 different people from as close as Phoenix all the way to NC, MD, FL, VA, NJ, SD, IA, IN, KS, OR, and WA,. We were on 24 MHz 14 Mhz and 144 MHZ. Using Phone and CW (Morse code). I collected 26 points gave out 4 points to each contact for the peak and had a blast.

Hank is a great friend and hiking partner!

My son decided to join me on this one. We started at the recommended parking location and began our hike up the mountain. My son was loving it, it was great to be out on the trail with the cool morning breeze. We saw two deer and a Red Tailed hawk. My son was hoping to spot a Javalina but we didn't see any this time. As we started the final ascend, we saw the "Rock Wall" and my son decided that the last part of the climb (500 ft from summit)was probably too tough for him. I assured him that if he wasn't feeling good about it that it's no problem and we'll stop here and have lunch before heading back and that's what we did. I'm glad my son joined me on this hike as he usually prefers to stay home. A great day it was, besides my wife leaving work early feeling sick as a dog... Sorry baby.

Third time's the charm: 1st time- Christmas week'09 I was camping under Byous Butte. Nonot and I had planned for Christmas Day, a variation of my loop hike "Byous Butte Loop w/Hewitt Ridge Cyn Hike" with a side trip along the way to summit Hackberry Butte if time permitted, but time did not permit. 2nd time- On 4/15/10 I was again camping under Byous Butte this week. Johnr1 and I had a plan#1 for a remote off trail day hike back in from Byous Butte Saddle#1 to try and gain the summit of Hewitt Ridge. We had a plan#2 to summit Hackberry Butte. After further assessing the risks for me to proceed with a summit of Hewitt Ridge based on my previous planned approach.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=133102 , I chickened-out and we proceeded with plan#2. By the time we reached what I thought was Hackberry Butte and its ridge line approach, it was just too daunting a ridge hike for that late in the day.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=133108 (only after discussing my interest in another summit attempt with ssk44 did I realize that this previous ridge line and summit was really not Hackberry Butte at all, but rather a ridge and summit a distance south.. ). 3rd time- I turned the trip planning over to ssk44 and he easily found the best off trail hike approach for my allusive Hackberry Butte Summit 4230 and I was off again to give it a go and this time successfully :D

This moderate two mile one way hike with a relatively easy to navigate off trail segment was a real winner and worth the wait. I enjoyed it enough to issue a new HAZ hike description with posted GPS Hiking and Driving Tracks, and my pic set to further document with captions the fun, scenic, and historic interest of it all. I do hope that others with consider giving it a try.

Three newly added peaks on the club list in one day: Iron Mountain, Montana Mountain, and Hackberry Butte. Moved the vehicles for each summit. First was Iron Mountain which we accessed by heading out from Rogers Trough a short distance on Reavis Ranch and West Pinto Trails, before cutting left up an old ridge route to the peak. Next we drove over on FR650 and parked for a short easy walk to Montana Mountain (about 1/4 mile/150 feet). Finally, we drove back down to the junction of FR172 and 172A and parked. After a short walk up the road, we cut left on an old steep 4x4 road (192B) until we reached a ridgeline by a fence and headed left and followed this ridge to the summit. Along the way we encountered some low rock walls I have occasionally seen while hiking (like the ones on Table Top). The distance and AEG numbers are the total for all three hikes that day.
