| no partners | | Wanted to go back to this one because I like it and it has been a long time since I was there. A group of us met up on the north side of the Tucson area and carpooled up for the hike. I enjoyed being a passenger for a change! Originally there were more signed up for this one, but various things whittled the final group to four. It was nice reminiscing about past hikes with Bob and Jackie, both of whom I hadn't seen in about 8 years, and to meet Demetri. We had a great time!
Hard to believe I hadn't been in the Superstitions since November 2012. I have always liked the drive up toward Rogers Trough, so it was really good to take in that awesome scenery again. We parked across the the road from the old jeep track you hike to get to the cutoff for the peak. I tried to get the track recorded on my new Garmin Oregon 450 gps, but I must have done something wrong as there was no track to save when I got back to the vehicle. But that's okay, since eventually I'll get the hang of it.
The photos that Hank and Brian recently posted fired me up even more to go (thanks for that nice new summit register Hank ). I mentioned to Bob to look for the gate in the fence along the way, but we missed it on the way up and stayed on the left side until the wall, which we climbed over to get to the final push to the top. Either way works, but it was a little nicer hiking on the other side as we found out on the way down (went through the gate).
Those rock walls sections are pretty impressive! While we were taking our lunch break on top Bob and I were checking out the ridgeline from Hackberry over to Peak 4285, and we agreed that it looked reasonable. Bob has done some off trail exploring up Hewitt Ridge, and has gone over to 4285 from Byous Butte utilizing some of Hank's route from Camp Grasshopper. He said he really likes that section of the ridge.
After the hike, we drove up toward Rogers Trough as Bob wanted to check out a little of what he calls Rogers Trough Ridgeline, which sort of parallels Rogers Canyon on the south side. But we decided we were running late in the day and getting a little tired and called off any more exploring. So it was back down the road with those killer views, then a stop for ice cream at McDonald's in Florence, and back to Tucson. |
