Our second hike in the Los Angeles area was Mount San Antonio or Mount Baldy as many call it. We choose to do the hike as a loop which is always more fun and started from Mount Baldy Trailhead near Manker Flat at about 630am. This is a very popular hike so recommend doing it on a weekday if you can. It was a Friday for us so pseudo weekday and there were fair number of other hikers.

We started on the road to the notch Ski Area for the first 3 miles or so. Easy hiking for sure and good warm up for the rest of the day. Once past the ski area we continued on ski run trails to the start of the Devils Backbone trail. Devils backbone is very narrow in spots and unfortunately on this day the winds were howling to the point lifting off the mountain was a concern. We discussed a couple of times if we were making the right choice. However, we pressed on and surprisingly the winds were much less on the summit.

The summit is pretty wide and flat so no problem finding a spot to break even with several groups. Had a nice long break to enjoy being over 10,000 feet for the first time. Eventually we hiked back down on the Baldy Bowl Trail which was really steep on the top part with very little in the way of trail construction. A few switch backs thrown in would have been nice.

We reached a saddle at about 8800 and the trail did get better with actual switchbacks. Continuing the descent we reached the San Antonio Sierra Club Ski hut. Water flowing in the creek next to it so a nice location that according to the signage can be reserved by anyone. The last couple of miles was good trail back down to Mount Baldy trailhead. Great loop even if partly on road!

2nd outing of the week, wasn't sure I'd be able to do this one because of the Achilles tendon, but figured I ought to at least give it a shot. Found the parking area, about 200 cars there, so it seems this is one of the most popular mountains in all of California. Even though it was pretty flat, I walked the whole road section up past the falls. Gets a bit steeper on the single track; tendon was loosening up nicely instead of complaining.

About a quarter mile past the hut, maybe ~2.5 miles in, it gets ridiculously steep. Quite the grind. Got to the summit in a little under 2 hours.

Figured I may as well check out West Baldy since it's close. Definitely worth the little ~1 mile round trip, since it gets you more unobstructed views to the west. And it's not a party up there.

After that, figured I may as well take Devil's Backbone back to Baldy Notch, which was a lot of fun. This is a really cool trail, and the side trip allowed me to stop into the cafe for an ice cold $3 can of soda. Beer was also an option...

The run down the road was fairly uneventful, and made much better time. Finished up just in time to go have lunch and get back to PHX at a reasonable hour.

Mount San Antonio, aka Mount Baldy, has been on my peakbagging list for a bit and I decided to drive over to LA and hike this one.

We did a CCW loop by going up the Devil's Backbone and coming down the Baldy Bowl Trail.

The first 3.5 miles or so were on a service road with a fairly modest grade -- this portion of the hike reminded me of hiking up to Mount Ord. The views were great and I did not mind being on the service road.

Hiking on the Devil's Backbone was my favorite part of the hike.

The last part of the ascent was pretty steep -- we gained about 800 feet in elevation over the last 0.6 miles to the summit.

I can see why they call this peak Mount Baldy -- there are no trees at the summit, giving it the look and feel of a hike to a Colorado 14er.

The descent was steep and slippery -- we dropped around 4,000 feet over 4.25 miles. I was glad to have poles.

I liked the ascent route much better than the descent. If I did this hike again I'd consider going up and down the Devil's Backbone.

We did not see anyone else on the ascent, although there were a couple of people at the summit when we got there. On the way down, we met a fair number of people heading up.

I thought that the hike had some nice scenery and it was a good workout. If I lived in the area, I imagine that I would do this one every now and then.

i did the classic loop with some extra goodies. started at the falls road trail head just beyond (bascially at) manker flats.

took the road up to baldy notch, then the world class awesome devils backbone to the summit. didn't see anyone til the top.

decided to spice things up and took the incredibly steep north backbone trail out to the summit of Dawson for amazing views back to baldy. worth it! considered going all the way out to Pine but i also wanted to hit west baldy and i wasn't entirely sure about the brief cloud build up over baldy (turned out to be nothing). 6000 feet of climbing would have to do for the day lol. on the way back up the brutal climb to baldy i saw 3 bighorn come charging full speed down the nearly vertical talus slope of baldy. totally unbelievable!

back on baldy i cruised out to the very nice summit of west baldy - probably my favorite of the day. chilled there for a bit.

came down the painfully steep yet beautiful baldy bowl trail.

this is the hike to come to the san gabriels for folks. absolutely killer!

This was a tough hike for me. I'm not sure what was wrong, but I was off from the beginning. When I made it up to the Baldy Lodge I stopped and ate a sandwich, hoping that would give me the energy that I lacked. Nope.

Better judgment would have me not summit today. Since the round trip drive for this hike is over 200 miles, better judgment is out the window. So up I went. It took me almost 4 hours to hike 5.4 miles. I was really sucking wind. Actually, I wasn't. My breathing was off. Nevertheless, I got some good photos up there.

On my way down and really considering buying a list ticket for a ride down to the parking lot. The lift ride would save me 1,500 vertical feet of hiking. It's all downhill on the trail, so I skipped the lift and hiked down.

This was a warm up elevation hike in preparation for my annual autumn leaves trip to Mammoth Lakes in a week and a half. Nice day. Cool and windy early. The wind died down later and it warmed up. Shot lots of photos of the Devil's Backbone that primarily show the exposure on both sides of the trail.

I’ve wanted to get up to Baldy all summer, but just couldn’t fit it in. So Labor Day weekend arrived and I didn’t have much on my radar. My wife wanted to have a date night Saturday, so we agreed that I could head up to Baldy on Sunday.

As I was driving east on I-210 I saw lots of clouds in the direction of Baldy. Was this going to be a washout? When I got to the ski area parking lot it was sunny, but there were lots of dark clouds up top, but they didn’t look very organized. So I figured I’d hike up and if it got dicey, I’d turn around.

I made good time heading up the FS road from the parking lot to the ski lodge. While hiking up a helicopter flew above and head up along the backbone. The summit wasn’t in view, so I couldn’t tell where it was going or what it was doing where I could hear it, but not see it. This happened several times on my way up.

I continued past the ski lodge and headed up the dirt road that takes you to the top of the western chairlift and the beginning of the backbone. I was making very good time.

Shortly after the backbone begins, there is a nasty section of trail that is slippery and loose and has a lot of exposure. I was pleased as I passed through this section that the forest service had done some very good trail maintenance on this section and it seemed like a whole different trail.

I finally rounded Mt. Harwood and there was that helicopter again, sitting on the summit with its rotors spinning. Not long after the helicopter came into view it took off and I never saw it again. What was it doing up there? Was this a medevac mission the involved multiple pick-ups?

I continued to make good time toward the summit. When I made it I saw a couple of larges caches of water and fruit. I recalled reading that there was a Labor Day run to the summit. Glad my hike was a day earlier. I settled down in one of the wind barriers and had lunch.

(See the Baldy Bowl Trail Triplog for the second half of the hike.)

This was a beautiful hike. Doing it on a Monday was a good decision because usually it's pretty crowded. My gps ran out of juice (forgot to put fresh batteries in) somewhere about half way. So the mileage is from most other trip reports and the AEG is a guesstimate (TH at 6,160 and the summit at 10,064 with a net gain of 3,900 - it was pretty much straight up without much ups and downs, so I wouldn't add a lot more on top of the 3,900).

Parked at Manker Flats. Took the road toward San Antonio Falls, which was about 0.6 mile from the TH. The paved road ended there after the hairpin turn and became a dirt road. Shortly after going up on the dirt road, Baldy Bowl trail (with no sign and only a couple of tiny little cairns) veered left and steeper climbing started. I'd read that some people easily missed this trail. As we went up along the east top of the San Antonio Canyon, the Sierra Club Ski Hut came into view every now and then. After about 2.6 miles and 2,000 feet gain, we got to the Ski Hut. It was a nice little resting spot with a few picnic tables. As we were approaching the Ski Hut, the jagged ridge of the bald crown popped into clear view pretty dramatically. We saw the most docile rattle snake ever while eating some food by the Ski Hut as well as a pair of young bighorn sheep. They were very curious and not bothered much by hikers.

From the Ski Hut, we went through a huge boulder field with gentle grade. Then it was some steep climbing through tall pines up onto the ridge. From the ridge, the trail went onto the south face of the Baldy. There were some very steep rocky sections. Don't forget to look back while you're climbing because the views are gorgeous! Vegetation started to thin out and there was no shade. I was grateful that the weather was not too warm. After a couple of false summits, the trail started to level out a bit and led up to the top of the Baldy.

The pano view on the top is gorgeous. We could clearly see San G and San Jacinto out in the distance. We spent a lot of time on the summit soaking in the views and chatting with other hikers. Then we took the Devil's Backbone trail to the east down to the Baldy Notch. The vista views on the backbone itself were grand. The ski lifts were running (stop and go) because some folks were taking them down from the Notch to shave off 1,300 feet and 3.8 miles of road hiking. We talked to some people on the summit who took the lift up to the Notch then hiked up the Devil's Backbone to the summit as well.

I'd definitely want to go back in the winter when the mountain is covered with snow and ice. It will be even a more lovely hike!

Every time I’ve hiked the Devil’s Backbone I’ve purchased a lift ticket and ridden up the chairlift to the restaurant at the base of the main ski area. The chairlift gets you to the restaurant in about 15 minutes and saves you 2.1 miles and about 1,300 feet of climbing. I’ve been hiking a lot this year and decided to hike up from the parking lot rather than take the chairlift.

The initial climb out of the parking lot is very steep. I’ve come down this way a few times and it’s tough going down because it’s is so slippery. I climbed at a good pace. In hindsight, it was too fast a pace. I paid dearly later in the hike for my initial burst of energy at the beginning of this hike.

About 400 vertical feet up the access trail meets the trail to the restaurant. The slope on this section is fairly steady and not too steep. I continued up this section at a brisk pace. The trail passes under the restaurant and then it’s a straight shot to the Devil’s Backbone trail.

I continued on up the Backbone at a pretty good pace until I started hitting a wall on the climb up the side of Mt. Harwood. The pace slowed to a crawl. The combination of too fast a pace, strong winds and maybe the 6 mile hike I did the night before were are working against me.

The trail flattens out for a long stretch along the side of Mt. Harwood. My pace picked up again on this section. The wind was howling and it was getting pretty cold. I was entertaining thoughts of calling it quits and turning around. I was too close at this point though, so I trudged on.

The final climb up to Mount San Antonio was brutal. The wind was knocking me off balance at every turn. I was not only tired from the climb, but now I was using a lot of energy trying to keep my balance. After a painfully slow ascent I finally reach the summit. Today was a perfect example of why so many wind shelters have been built up on the summit out of rocks.

I found a nice wind shelter to settle down at and eat lunch. I estimate that the temperature was in the 40’s. Not good whether for shorts and a t-shirt. I put on a sweater that I had in my pack, but I was definitely not prepared for how cold and windy it was.

While eating I was fascinated by all of the clouds that were forming out of nowhere. Looking down in the canyon, a small cloud would form out of nothing and build within a minute or two to a large cloud and then rise up above the summit.

On the way down the wind was so strong and it was so cold that I altered my course to a section that I thought was better protected from the wind. I was wrong. I could have really used a pair of gloves. Fortunately, once I was on the side of Mt. Harwood, the wind and the temperature were more tolerable.

About half way down I ran into a couple girls that were clearly on the mountain for the first time. They showed me the map that they picked up from the ski area and wanted to know how they could get to the Baldy Bowl Trail. It was after 4 PM, so there was less than 3 hours of daylight left. I tried to convince them that they didn’t have enough daylight to hike down the Baldy Bowl Trail. One of the girls said that she didn’t want to go back down the section of trail that they had just climbed. She was afraid of the exposure. I get a little scared on that section too. I tried to tell them that it’s a tall steep mountain and there are other sections that they may not like ahead and that they should go back down the Backbone. They chose to go to the Baldy Bowl Trail. I hope they are OK.

I was so tired when I reached the restaurant that I bought a lift ticked down to the parking lot rather than hike an extra 2.1 miles down with the punishing 400 vertical foot final descent. The hike was definitely not one my better hikes up this mountain, but I made it and had a smile on my face when I looked up the mountain as I rode the lift down.

It’s been 4 years since I last climbed Mt. San Antonio. I’ve been hiking a lot lately and am in pretty good shape. I wasn’t in nearly as good of shape for all of my previous climbs. So I was ready to see how I would handle the climb this time around. My 19 year old son agreed to join me. He vetoed my plans to make the hike a loop with a descent down the Baldy Bowl Trail. He’s not a shape, so it was for the better.

Just how out of shape my son is became evident very early. I would pace myself up the mountain for a half mile or so and stop and wait, sometimes as much as 10 minutes, for him to catch up. Early on I wasn’t sure if we would make the summit. My son’s calf muscles were very tight. He got them loosened up and we proceeded.

When we reached the saddle between Mt. Harwood and Mt. San Antonio, I told my son that I would see him at the top. This final 700+ vertical foot climb had always been hard on me in the past. Not this time. I felt great.

I sat in one of the makeshift wind shelters on the summit and ate my lunch. It was close to a half hour later when my son made it to the summit. He was doing OK, but was clearly wiped out. He had his lunch while I roamed around the summit taking photos. At one point a small plane buzzed West Baldy before circling Mt. San Antonio.

The descent was relatively uneventful. As we got closer to the bottom it started to get pretty hot. It turned out that southern California was much warmer than the forecast had called for. Glad it wasn’t as warm during our ascent.

I've skied at Mt Baldy Ski Area, but this was my first climb to the top of Mt Baldy (San Antonio). We were heading to Mt Waterman, but discovered that the road to Waterman was still closed as a result of the forest fire that occured the previous autumn. Today we climbed the Devil's Backbone and descended the Baldy Bowl Trail.
