Hike 4 on the day.

It was hot and there was 0 shade.

It sounded fun when I put this on the agenda. Standing at the bottom it looked daunting towards the top. A local I talked to said there are 1048 steps.

The spacing on the RR ties was just a bit too far apart for me to take longer strides. As I climbed higher, I was glad.

At the top a welcoming cool breeze. More pillboxes and assorted machinery.

My legs were like rubber climbing down. I passed a guy who I'd seen earlier doing a double like it was nothing. I called him crazy and he gave be that look.

Monday before we flew back to AZ after visiting my daughter who lives in Scofield. Was a warm day, but the cool Hawaiian breeze made it tolerable, albeit humid!!! Lots of steps and a bit of "pucker" when crossing the "bottomless" area. Relatively crowded as well.

This hike is steep climb up to Koko Head Crater over 1200 wooden stairs. From the top you get great views of Diamond Head, Honolulu and Makapu Lighthouse. You are exposed on the trail and it gets hot so start as early as you can. My hike started at 5am, making it to the top just before sunrise. Great exercise.

First day back on Oahu, I joined Jared and a few other guys from his squadron on a hike up Koko Head. This was a pretty cool hike! It didn't look like much at first, but it was pretty rough: the "trail" is an old railway, with the crossbeams forming steps the whole way up. There was one section where the earth had given way under the beams, so you really had to watch your step to avoid slipping through the foot-wide spaces between each step! It was a steep climb, and I was glad I wasn't wearing heavy plate armor like the guys-- they don't mess around! :D
After catching our breath at the top, Jared and I ventured down a ways on part of the ridge forming the crater. We enjoyed some amazing views of Hanauma Bay before climbing back up and then running back down the railway track. :)
