First sunny day in a week.
I'm still chasing water from this weeks rains.
Today wanted to check out the Spring Canyon area at the end of Frye Mesa Rd and hike along this old, forgotten & no longer maintained trail built many years ago by the Arizona Trailbuilders.
Arrived to see that Spring Canyon Wash was not flowing much and that was very surprising considering all the water coming off the mountain everywhere else :?
Completed the very short loop, then up the old dirt road to the corrals and lastly off-trailing over to Hawk Hollow Tank which was all but dry, again :?
Finished up right at sunset on this late afternoon shorty. I believe that the cattle & myself are the only ones who have hiked this trail in years, I doubt many others even know it exists ..... and that's too bad, it's a nice little nature trail. I'll just keep it for myself :-$

Started with the out-n-back to Sheep Tank.
Very scenic views of the snow-capped eastern Pinalenos the entire way.
fricknaley scaredy cows also the entire way.
Then a short drive further up Frye Mesa Rd for Spring Canyon Wash.
Wonderful short-n-sweet nature trail, but getting more difficult to follow as the years pass on.
Again, very scenic views up the snowy mountain from the base.
I ended with an off-trail hike down to Hawk Hollow tank at sunset.
No wildlife today, but I did spot a desert lawnmower :)
Very pleased with today's choices!

It's been 2 years since my last fishing trip up to the reservoir, today was a perfect day for a revisit hike up to get a line wet!
Made the 3.5 mile hike up & down to this very pretty little lake and before settling in for some fishing, I first hiked around the shoreline getting pics of the dam, lake & awesome waterfall that feeds the reservoir. I then got out the fishing gear and made a little cove my camp for the next 3 hours. Didn't catch a pumpkin thing, but that was alright, I had the whole lake to myself all day just to enjoy being alone with my thoughts and listen to the sounds of small wakes hitting the shore in front of me and the roar of the waterfall behind me .......... It was wonderful!
As it got late in the day I hated to leave, wished I had brought overnight gear, but had to head back down the mountain. Arrived back at my truck with just enough light left to hike the short Spring Canyon nature trail before leaving.

One of my favorite trips of the year!

I had almost forgot about this pretty little trail at the end of Frye Mesa Rd.
Only had a couple of hours to hike before sundown and this fit the bill. I first looped the very short nature trail and then took the high road down to Hawk Hollow tank. On the return trip I decided on another loop around the nature trail and was glad I did, ran into Gila Monster #5 for the year! The previous 4 have all been youngsters, but this one was a real nice adult. A couple of tarantulas on the drive out rounded off the wildlife sightings on this very pleasant late evening desert stroll!

While antiquing in the local trading post, I came across an old 1982 nature trail guide book written by the Arizona Trailbuilders titled "Pinaleno Trails". One of the trails is at the base of Frye Mesa and today I decided to check it out. I quickly completed & enjoyed this nicely built, but very short (.5 m) trail that took me through some classic Sonoran desert habitat. Back at the parking area, I then headed up to the top of the nearby mesa along an old jeep road and took it down to Hawk Hollow tank and back ending a very nice afternoon on a newly discovered trail. I would bet that 999 out of 1000 people that drive up this road have no idea that this nice little trail even exists, I didn't!
