Started at a different spot--the marina boat launch, and then paddled east. My expectations were low, as I didn't think there was much interesting on that far end of the lake. Wrong.

The lake nestles into a nice narrow-ish slot that paddles by some great swimming holes and cliff jumping spots.

I'll do this one again.

Headed to Canyon Lake for an early morning paddle with hopes of exploring up-canyon a bit if boat traffic and winds were favorable.

Arrived at the put in after disturbing a committee of turkey vultures that were congregated in the parking area. The early morning light at the lake was beautiful with clear skies and little to no breeze - and even better, not a motorized boat in sight! Quickly got the gear out and set off across the lake, stopping first to swing into the cove housing Mormon Flat Dam before continuing on up canyon for a bit. As we were heading up canyon, things started warming up quickly with the sun clearing the cliff walls, with the occasional motor boat passing through. After checking out a few alcoves and the section of the lake widening out again, we decided to turn back and head for First Water Cove for a snack break before eventually calling it a day and heading back to our cars. The breeze had picked up a little as we were heading back in, making paddling a little more challenging, though it didn't seem to have any appreciable cooling effect - by the time we got back to the vehicles, temps were over 100F.

It was wonderful to be on the lake with so little traffic and with the surface so calm, though it was a shame that the air quality was so poor. At some point, I'd love to paddle up to Horse Mesa Dam or as close to it as I can get, though that would be a long day indeed - better to attempt in slightly cooler weather while the days are still reasonably long.

Wildlife: It was a great day at the lake with sightings of Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, American Coot, Double Crested Cormorants, a Bald Eagle, and three bighorn sheep! Also saw numerous fish jumping for breakfast, but wasn't able to identify any.

RS seems to think that I kayaked uphill 71 feet. I'll override that stat. Then again, according to the google map layer, less than a quarter mile of this trip occurred on water, so maybe there's something to it.

'Twas a pleasant couple of hours on the water. It's been a while since I put the hardsided ship to sea. It has some advantages over the inflatable board.

Encountered an entire gaggle of herons. A handful of other water users. Mostly empty parking lots and no traffic in the shipping lanes. This one is enjoyable once in a while.

Beautiful day for an afternoon kayak at Canyon Lake. Slightly breezy when we started, but it does down quickly and the lake was smooth as the late afternoon sun descended.

Saw a bobcat along the shoreline. Super cool. Got some video, but the photos aren’t too great.

Yella came up with this plan as an alternative to a meeting up in town somewhere normal. Bloomin' weeds look great on the drive out the 88. We put in at Boulder and went upstream. I knew the water was about 3 feet below normal, so we had a short sand scoot to get back to where boulder hits the lake. It was still flowing nicely. Not bad for mid-April. A hiker could easily wade this stretch at this water level rather than going up and over (showing 1655 with 5 ft. remaining ... though I can't recall it ever being above the 1658/2 ft. remaining level).

From there we paddled past the marina and upstream into Tortilla. Funny cause for some reason I'd never pieced together mentally that it drained into the lake this way and not farther upstream. Something about that big hill you drive over between Canyon and the burger joint. Really pretty narrows actually, and a great destination for paddlers.

No traffic on the lake as midweek April apparently isn't a thing for other people. Sunset was cloudless and boring, and the insects were brutal at dusk. Nonetheless we made it back to the launch without incident.

We rented kayaks and went to Canyon Lake. The Acacia and Palo Verde parking areas were full, so we parked at the Boulder Recreation Site and launched our kayaks there. The sky was overcast, and we fought a fairly brisk wind as we headed north. There were a lot of powerboats, jetskis, and pontoons out, so we stayed close to the shoreline for the most part. Those in our group who had stand-up paddleboards were having some difficulty with the wind and the wakes from all the powerboats. The scenery was amazing, especially with the overcast sky. The water was warm.

We reached Russ Cove, where we got out and stretched our legs. There was some trash at the campsite, so we cleaned it up, then had some snacks and beers. My buddy was walking around just east of the campsite when we all heard a loud rattle. He was wearing flip-flops and had almost stepped on the rattler. He yelled and jumped back, as the rattler started to strike at him, then reversed direction in midair and slithered into the grass. The snake continued to rattle for over a minute afterward. Everyone was a little freaked out after that.

I headed toward the Point Campground Overlook to see the views. There was a well-defined use trail, and it was a very easy walk the entire way. However, it was VERY slow going due to snake concerns. The use trail was very narrow, was surrounded by very tall grass, and passed by numerous rocks and ravines where snakes could be hiding. I obtained a long stick, which I used to tap all of the rocks and to poke around in the grasses approximately 6-8 feet ahead. This paid off, as I flushed out 2 more rattlers on the way to the outlook. It rained for about 5 minutes as I reached the outlook. The views were excellent, especially with the clouds. I headed back, again very carefully, but didn't run into any snakes on the way back. The rest of the group was ready to call it a day. The wind was much calmer on the way back, but some of the powerboats and jetskis were coming in pretty close. We got back to the launch site, picked up the trash that was floating in the water there, and headed home for barbecue and more beers.

Quick trip to test out the new inflatable kayak with my daughter. Found a nice spot to launch at the Boulder TH and paddled out some of the small tendrils away from the marina. Good time and we stopped in a Tortilla Flat for a drink before heading home. TF was bumping! Live band and the largest crowd I have ever seen at that place.

I met up with Joel and Jon for a fun afternoon on the lake. It was expectedly busy when we arrived but as daylight waned the lake turned placid and we got to enjoy some special corners of the Four Peaks Wilderness. A giant moon rose to the east and the nighttime paddle back to civilization was spectacular. Temps were ideal and I took advantage with a couple of swim breaks.

paddled back to Blue Tank with an attempt to hike up into Hell's Hip pocket. too much water in Blue Tank!! there were chest high wades in the first narrow that we were not prepared for.. we had just a bit of rain two weeks prior, but man that stacked up high when forced into a 4' wide slot. anyway, turned around after the 5 mi paddle to ol' Blue, and stayed the night near the Point. looks like the FS took the metal canopy away, have no idea why they would. so now, there's no longer shade at the Point.

fyi, debris on the water from woodbury fire, lake level is good, but we saw one jet ski/sea doo that ruined the impeller full of bullrush/cattail reeds and he had to be towed out.

After thinking I wouldn't be able to paddle this weekend, Gary and I somewhat spontaneously made it out to Canyon Lake to paddle. It was a beautiful morning and we were able to find relative peace and quiet in some of the tributaries. Good escape after working too much. Next time we'll go up the Salt quite a bit more.

Spent the morning kayaking on Canyon Lake with my daughter. Overcast skies and almost no wind, along with very few boats on the lake made it an excellent day for kayaking. We saw some bighorn sheep, and took our time exploring various caves/alcoves on our way out to the Point Campground. Along the way, we docked and hiked up and over to the CG overlook, which is provides an impressive view of the lake and surrounding area with a 250 ft. sheer cliff. Great place to take a break and enjoy lunch and the veiws. After lunch we hiked back down and then kayaked around to the campground. Ran into Dolly the "steamboat" out with a tour. Campground was a nice spot. I'll be back for a kayak overnighter. Any time I get a chance to spend a day in the great outdoors with my teenage daughter is a great day!

My dad and I went fishing at Canyon Lake on Saturday. The fishing sucked but the bighorn sheep viewing opportunities were amazing. We saw two separate groups, both with large rams. The rams behavior indicated that the rut is coming soon (or ending soon). The first group came right down to the lake. It looked like they were thinking about it. We just hung out for about thirty minutes. It worked out perfect.

Sheep are just so majestic. It's amazing to watch them at such a close distance. Ha.. Where in the country can you fish and watch bighorn sheep at the same time? Very cool.

The original plan was to canoe out to canoe out to Point Campground, with a pitstop and short hike up to the Point Campground Overlook. However, when we got to the lake, the wind was blowing harder than forecast, with small whitecaps across the lake. I was out with the family, and none of us is expert canoers, so we modified the plan and headed down from the dock, along the shoreline by the Acacia day use area, then under the bridge and up the First Water Creek outlet. The water was much calmer in the outlet and the canyon slots up a bit on the south side of the bridge, providing some beautiful scenery from the canoe vantage point. Eventually the shallow water prevented further canoeing, and we found a nice grassy spot to pull over for lunch and a quick off-trail scramble up to the top of a nearby high-point for a panoramic view of the surrounding area. After lunch, we paddled back. Against the wind, the going was a bit slower, but everyone was in good spirits and we counted it a success, even though we didn't reach our original goal. Still made some good family memories together. I'll be back when calmer waters prevail to tackle the original itinerary.

It would have been a better day for hiking. But I really wanted to try out my new (used) kayak & carbon fiber wing paddle. Gloomy day for sure with a chance of rain late afternoon / evening. Sure enough, on my way back across the 'big' section of the lake, it began to rain with thunder booming off to the west. Time to get out of the water!! Any day out in nature & not stuck at work or home is a good day.

Got in a great kayak trip to Canyon Lake last Saturday. My first time on this lake, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. A group of 6 of us made the drive out and we put in at Acacia beach a bit before 9, just a few people out there. We were waiting on two in our group, so the rest of us paddled over past the marina to the Boulder Rec area just for fun. Once we made it back we met up with our two latecomers and headed up north. We paddled past a cool cave/ grotto on the north side of the lake and checked that out, fun stuff. We eventually made it to the Point Campground to stop for lunch and a break. We headed about another half mile up the lake, and then we made the turnaround to head back. About 1 or so the wind kicked up, and we had to paddle the last 2-3 miles into a pretty strong headwind. This took a pretty good effort, and we were all pooped by the time we pulled out boats out. Traffic definitely picked up in the afternoon, the beach was packed and there were no open parking spots left. Next time I would like to get out here even earlier. This has to be one of the most scenic lakes around town, and still less than an hour and a half drive from the house. Good times!

1st and last time I was in a Kayak was 19 years ago. It was a cold, foggy day on Lake Superior and you really didn't want to go swimming, seriously! :o

Brian has a spare and told me months ago that we should do this, this summer. Today seemed like the perfect day. And it was. Got on the Water about 10:00 from Acacia, and paddled across to the Channel. I figured out by this time, that the last person to use this Kayak was waaayyy taller than I was, so once we got across the Main body of the Lake, we pulled over to some rocks so I could get out and adjust the foot pegs. Of course, graceful me was having a hard time getting out there and just as I finally managed it, a boat wake hit and I ended up swamping the whole boat.... Sooo, starting off the trip really well with a T-Rescue manuever to empty the 100 gallons of water..... :sl:

Finally back in, foot pegs adjusted and away we went again. Beautiful way to see Canyon Lake. Very little wind and not alot of Boat Traffic today. We took a small break under a very nice, shaded alcove on the Water and then continued on. Paddled all the way back in a small inlet hoping to see some Wildlife and enjoyed the little side trip immensely. Tons of Dragonflies and saw quite a few Bluegill at the very back. Lots of birds in the area as well.

Took about an hour break in there, with some swimming time and then headed back out and down the Lake some more. Saw this really cool Cave and Brian and I were both commenting on possibly exploring it some day. We were almost past it and I was still checking it out, when I saw something white just to the left of it. Woo Hoo! Bald Eagle! Sitting on a Rock Ledge not more than 20 feet from the Cave Entrance, about 150 feet up from the Water. Amazingly, that bird never moved anything more than it's head, considering how much farting around I was doing below him, trying to get the camera out of the Dry Bag, turning on the Digital Zoom, trying to pull the boat over so I wasn't quite in so much motion.... I told Brian that if for some reason the Bird was still there on the way back, I was gonna get out and try a couple of more shots. Poor Brian, even in a Boat he had to stop and wait for me to get pictures!!! :sl:

We continued paddling and arrived at the Point Campground and took a small break for swimming, more pictures, and a snack. The wind started coming up a bit and we knew that the paddle back would be a little tougher, so after we rested and cooled off, we took off, back the way we came.

That Eagle had never moved!!! Another, slightly more graceful exit out of the Kayak and up the slippery rock to try for a better shot. I have a feeling that there was a nest up there, but I don't think the bird was on it. I could see something to it's right that looked like it could be, but it was too high to know for sure. It was a nice sized ledge. After a fairly graceful entry (I was slowly learning), back into the Boat, it was back to paddling. The Breeze stiffened up at times, but it wasn't too bad. Took another breather in the shaded alcove and then paddled back out and across to the car.

Great Trip, Brian! Nice upper body workout that I'm sure I'll really feel tomorrow.... Never got hot, water temp was Perfect!!! Not too windy, not fighting too many boat wakes, good company, and a Bald Eagle....What more could you possibly ask for on a Tuesday??? :y: Well, maybe a Bighorn, but they must have been feeling unsocial today. Gotta save something cool for next time anyway!!! Thanks for driving and loaning me the Boat, Brian. Definitely will do this again... :D

Beautiful, but BUSY, day on the lake. We spotted about a dozen big horn sheep which made it all worth the craziness. Loved the little beach we found, but no luck fishing! Canyon is by far our favorite lake, we'll be back!
