Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout | Pop | Map | Popup | MapDEX
For the record (and to refresh Matt’s memory), Matt texted me on Dec 22nd saying he wanted to hike Pusch before the end of the year. I said if he could wait til after Christmas, I could join him.

We got started around 0745. While it was windy when I left Phoenix this morning, there was no breeze in Oro Valley when we started, so it felt fairly warm. We turned off towards the flatiron, then Matt informed me the route he wanted to take up the ridge to reconnect with the main trail had some brush. Oh yes it did. Brushy, thorny, steep, loose offtrail. We did survive, and getting back to the main trail was a relief. Losing some elevation was a fun little treat too.

Once back on the main trail, we took our time for the final 1300’ climb to the summit. It was still so much easier than what we had done on the offtrail. Nice breeze at the summit, but the views were hazy from dust. Still good though.

The descent was straightforward, and mostly a matter of not falling. Lots of chatty hikers on the way down.

I’ve worn the Aku Rockets on a few hikes now, and have been overall quite impressed. Grip is incredible, I did not slide at all today, no matter the terrain. 10/10 for sure. I still have not worn them on wet surfaces, but dry surfaces are amazing. They are a stiffer shoe than my Solomons, but seemed a little more flexible today vs my first couple of hikes in them. For short, steep hikes, I’d rate the comfort an 8/10. The one longer hike I did in them was less comfortable, but I may try them again on a longer hike now that they feel a little more broken in. I do wear moleskin on the back of my heels since it seems like they might want to create a hotspot while hiking uphill. As long as I remember to cover my heels, it’s fine. I will probably get a pair to leave in Idaho for the steeper hikes up there. I still doubt they’d become my default for higher mileage hikes though.

Good to see Matt again, and a fun morning!

A few weeks back, Linda suggested we do this hike. I don't know why, I mean it just sounded crazy to me. Anyway, I agreed to consider it, and after reviewing the track, I mentioned to her that this looked like one of those hikes where someone could really get hurt, but she told me to "toughen up...", so here we are.

We hit the trail at 0741 & about 55 deg. Within a half hour of that, I was officialy sweating as the climbing began. Soon enough, we decided to bypass the steep main trail for the much steeper off-trail route, via the Flatiron. For the ascent, we would follow a track that was based on a mule route of many years ago. A large part of this old section is either bushwhack or bushcrash, marked with a couple of short, but uncomfortable climbs. Before we knew it, that tough part of our outing was in the mirror, and we could now focus on dropping 135 ft to the canyon bottom, just to regain it on the other side  . On the upside, that left us with only 1,250 more ft of AEG to reach the peak, and a whole mile in which to do it :rollH: .

After a 15-ish minute break at the peak, we started back. I know you're all thinking "it's all downhill from here", and while you'd be correct, I must tell you that it's a tideous go. The return went by with a lot less huffing & puffing, but not any faster than the ascent. We did see and talk to quite a few people on the descent, which may have slowed us down a bit, but overall, it's just a slow go.

Eventually, we got back to the TH, and hadn't needed to get out the 'Bleed Stop', so we did pretty good. Thanks Linda for driving down to drag me across the open desert, and up and down the rocky canyons again. Until next time...

I did this hike with Angie. It was her first time hiking this trail and to this popular lookout.

We arrived at 10 am on a Friday (non-weekend). The parking lot at the Linda Vista trailhead was 100% full and so was the overflow lot. This is one of the areas which are in desperate need of an expanded parking lot!

There were many other hikers including a few older guys who were planning on hiking all the way to Pusch peak. We also met 2 hikers from Alberta, Canada, and 2 others from Minnesota. Great to be living in a place where walking outside is not like walking into a freezer! The high temp was reported to be 65 but it felt over 70 when we were in the sun. It was comfortable to hike in jeans and a short sleeve T-shirt.

Stats:
-----------
3.88 miles round trip
1,125 feet AEG
Strava moving time: 1 hr 52 mins
Strava elapsed time: 3 hrs 56 mins

I'm at the point of my life where my adult children are bringing home potential suitors for the holidays. No better way to get to know someone than taking them out for a hike to see what they are made of. Did a leisurely stroll up to the Flatiron for someone who has never been to Arizona before. Made it up and down in about 90 minutes and then drove 5 minutes home so that everyone could get lunch with the family.

Did bump into Roy Carter on the way down. Still looking pretty spry and bemoans that all of his climbing partners have hung up their climbing shoes for the last time. He's itching to get in some time on the crags.

Quick zip up before work. Made it to the Flatiron in 31 minutes and tip toed down, trail is fairly loose in spots.

Saw recent evidence of the bear that's been seen wandering around Oro Valley. They were digging up around a tree stump on the side trail going out to the Flatiron.

It's a weekend of family functions and get togethers, only had time to sneak out for a quick local hike. While not quite to Piestewa or Camelback crowds, this is starting to get busier every year. Got to the trailhead about 7AM and every spot in both lots and on the street were already full. Folks were starting to park down the road at the retail complex.

Fairly uneventful, took my time getting up and down. Highlight of the trip was seeing a Gila Monster.

First person to officially christen the trail for the 2025 Pusch Peak season. Went up at a leisurely pace in the dark with my headlamp in about 33 minutes. Trail is in decent shape and lots of evidence of bighorn sheep in the area. Probably head back on Saturday to do the whole climb up to the peak.

Leasurely push up Pusch. Hot and humid and my legs are dead from doing a lot of squats earlier this week.

Bees seemed to have disappeared this week, so that's good. They were pretty aggressive the last time I was up here and two weeks ago the bees killed a landscaper at the golf course located near the base of the overall peak.

Quick zip up before work. It's Phoenix hot today, at daybreak it was almost 90 degrees already. Appears that the bighorn sheep are coming down in search of pool water, saw a bunch of scat pretty close to the parking lot.

Did a quick hike before work. Out the door by 4:30 AM and still (barely) made it to work by 7:30 AM.

The bees appear to be back this year. At their usual location just below that third class climb near the two boulders on the left side of the trail that make a small little cave. But an added bonus is that they are now on the tip of the Flatiron. Got up there and immediately had bees bouncing off my head and shoulders. Needless to say, I was 7 minutes faster going down this trip as opposed to last weekend.
