We hiked in this general area two weeks ago, and today's plan was to hike up to Maverick Butte and check out some of the small Hohokam ruins along the way, then drop down to Deer Flat and, time permitting, go up to the summit of Willow Spring Mountain. The morning started out ~30° as we headed east from Bronco Trailhead along FR 2047 before making our way up a gentle slope to a ridge north of Sycamore Canyon.

There were a series of three small ruins within a few tenths of a mile of each other on the ridge, though they were badly deteriorated and would've been easy to miss if we hadn't been paying attention. They were little more than low, rectangular outlines of a room or two at each site, more noticeable because of the concentration of rocks than the actual shape of a structure. We didn't spend too much time at any of the sites, but we found very little pottery at any of them. It was interesting, though, that these sites weren't built at particularly high points or areas with especially good visibility.

We headed east from there and found one more small ruin, with maybe two rooms, but still not much pottery, then turned north to approach Maverick Butte. We decided not to make the steep descent down to Duberry Spring to save more time for Willow Spring Mountain, so we continued up and over hill 4533, then dropped down to the saddle and approached Maverick from the south/southeast.

It was a steady incline up the rocky/grassy slope, but a straightforward route without much in the way of loose rock or sharp brush and only a little easy scrambling needed just below the summit, where we saw a deer run off. I placed a summit register in the cairn, and we took a snack break and enjoyed the views. There was a nice dusting of snow on the Mazatzal Peaks and along the Mogollon Rim on the distant northeast horizon. The peak has some nice views of Horseshoe Reservoir, Humboldt Mountain, the distant Superstitions, and even downtown Phoenix through the haze.

We dropped down the west side of the summit and then continued north past the second, lower peak and around the east side of hill 4566, where there was a decent game trail, then connected with a muddy FR 1099. We left the road again near the northern Deer Flat tank, and I could tell we probably wouldn't have time to make it over to Willow Spring Mountain and back with the time we had remaining. TBoneKathy waited while I made my way over there, and I made it most of the way up the ridgeline west of the peak but was a little over a half mile away before I needed to turn back...I think I'd done most of the hard part, but something to see next time :).

We hiked back down to FR 1099 and followed that to Seven Springs Road, roughly a mile and a half to the trailhead to complete the loop. There were a few trucks with trailers parked there, but we didn't see any hikers all day, just some distant ATVs on the roads. The ruins weren't anything spectacular, and we probably saw more pottery in random spots along the route than we did at the sites themselves, but it was nice to explore this area a little more and visit a new peak. I'll have return to finish the Willow Spring portion of the route when I'm out this way again sometime. As it turned out, our route unintentionally ended up being sort of a reverse variation of @The_Eagle's Dec. 2020 Deer Flat/Maverick Butte hike, right down to coming up a little short of Willow Spring Mountain.

Started at the crack of noon. At about 12:30, I was on a Mesa and woke up 3 napping deer. I hate being woken up from a nap so I felt bad. They gleefully pranced away with a need for speed. The route to Maverick was pretty direct so I had to lose altitude and then regain it. Hit the summit about 1:30 and decided to take a creek route back which was fun but it kept pulling me further from my car. First time RS glitched on me. Map went blank and had a dancing dot. But I think it still recorded everything. I had this loving feeling in the creek. It was very relaxing. It also enhanced my need for speed. Wish I had a wingman for this one.

Looking for a short hike in the Cave Creek area. I had actually chosen Deer Flat 1009, but when i got home and saw there was actually a place designated for Maverick I opted to do my write up under Maverick Butte. Still went in on the Deer Flat rd. Got there a little after 7am and parked in a “roundabout “ with enough room for 3 trucks with trailers. The road up was rough. It wasn’t steep, but it was constant and very rocky. My ankles were feeling it, especially on the way down. Every time I thought it might start to level out, I found there was more to the hill...and the rocks. :( The trail finally leveled out when I reached the first tank, where I came upon 2 deer with the biggest white tails that I can recall seeing. There was no water in the tank, but it was muddy from the recent rain. Just past the tank, to the left, is the “cemetery” under one of the few trees in the area. There were 3 gravesites that I could see: Buddy, Mercy and Pharoah. All had metal crosses with their names upon them. There was a faded wooden sign on the side of one of the graves, which made me think that the wooden sign was the original marker and that they were “refreshed” with metal crosses at some later time. In my mind this is a good turn around spot for someone wanting to hike Deer Flats Rd. It is the high point of the road, providing views to both the east and west sides. However, the road does continue, swinging to the south. This was perfect for me, since it was taking me toward Maverick Butte, which is the obvious high point to the south. I was only on the road for about .3 miles before leaving it and heading cross country. I imagine this may have been a more challenging and beautiful foray before the recent fire. Today, it was just a ravaged landscape with patches of greenery where the fire had hopped. I was surprised to find (what in my mind is) a type of fountain grass being the first to recover. There were clumps of this hardy grass sprouting up in several spots. There were two high points, the one that was further south was higher and the one I summited. Horseshoe Lake looked to be incredible low. I was seeing as much brown from where the lake use to be as the lake itself. :( On the way back I reconnected with Deer Flats Rd and followed it south for a short time before heading cross country (for the most part, this section was not burned) to meet up with the road again that I hiked in on. This gave me an appreciation of what the hike to the summit might have been like if the fire had not destroyed all the vegetation. Came across a single petroglyph on one of the rocks. Neat! Took the road back to my car. Didn’t see anyone the entire, though as I neared my car I was passed by a truck attempting to drive up the road. Ok hike. The trail being a rocky road and the burnt landscape brought the enjoyment factor down a bit.

I was gently reminded that it would be nice to have the Christmas Lights up before... Christmas. Deer Flat popped up on my Google News feed. It was close and short, so I decided to get this in and have time to get the lights up. I took a peek at it and wanted to tie in a couple of peaks in the area also.

Deer Flat #1009 is a TRAL ORV 2 track. It's rocky and a steady climb. At the 2 mile mark, just past the first tank, evidence of the Sears fire from the fall of this year. The north side of the trail was untouched from this point, the south side was torched. I took this track to the end and went off trail to 4566 and then to Maverick Butte. The burn made the off trail a lot easier. From the top you could see the New River Mountains, the Mazzys, the Superstitions and the McDowells.

I traced my steps back and discovered a faint use trail that went around the east side of 4566. This was much easier than my route the other direction.

My next goal was Willow Spring Mountain. Looking at my watch, I was running low on time and decided to only go part way and check out the route. Calculating the time it would take me to get there and back would have taken be out of favor at home.

On the way down Deer Flat, I passed two hikers that were huffing and puffing saying they had heard about this "Easy Hike" in their news. I also passed a quail hunter scouting deer hunting opportunities.

Comfortably cool all day with long pants and shirt.

Some research told me there was a good size Hohokam ruin west of the Verde that I figured must be seldom visited. The only reference to it I could find in the "Google-verse" was a dot on a map.

I tried to get there a few weeks ago by going over Kentuck Mtn. but had the location wrong - don't trust a low res map. I studied satellite pictures and thought I spotted it near a springs which shared the ruins name (rhymes with Schmooberry). Tried an approach from the Horseshoe side but the going was too rough for me. Finally a foolproof plan: make a better approach from the west (Seven Springs Rd.) and drop down to the location.

I parked near the Bronco Trailhead and headed east up the ridge. Gentle and open it's a pleasant walk and I was happy to pass three small ruins on the way up to the "Horseshoe divide". The first two were just single rooms - the first one had some pottery. The last one, essentially at the saddle point on top, had several rooms, some pottery pieces, and would have been good lookout both east and west.

The drop down the far side was steep and loose and a little worse than expected. I ended up on a nice flattish plain north of the creek and found a fair amount of pottery and a small ruin there. Unfortunately my target on the other side of the creek was a dud - nothing there - so much for foolproof.

I decided to head back to the flat plain and look a bit before climbing back out. I found another ruin area with several rooms - whether these sites combine to represent Schmooberry Springs "Village" I do not know.

The climb out toward Maverick Butte was tough. I continued on to the top but upon reaching the summit I was attacked by bees. Sheesh....I had a good 5min. battle which only ended when I scrambled quite a ways down the scree, all the time swinging my hat at the swarm around my head. I got in a good couple hundred blows (to my head). Anyway no chance to check for a register, no summit pictures, and I donate my old sunglasses to the top of Maverick Butte.

I continued with my plan to head a bit north and come back to Seven Springs Rd. using the next ridge heading west. This one was (much) rockier and more overgrown than the one I went up.

Interesting loop in interesting country (sublime and ridiculous). Disappointed that I didn't find a big seldom seen ruin but I'm crossing this one off the list.

Took the track up to Deer Flat and then off trail up Maverick Butte. Retuned off trail down a couple of ridges.
