Shake Trail #309

Up Bark Trick half way to the high point overlook.
Then some off-trail down the canyon a bit.
Up just a half mile on the Shake for sunset.
Stormy skies all day, never got wet.
Fun day

My shoulder is healing well and I have been released to (almost) full hiking status.
I am now on a mad scramble to get in a few favorite desert hikes before the heat starts up.
Bark Trick Tank was the choice today ... and a good one!
Just a beautiful walk through the Greasewoods down to the big hidden valley meadow.
Lots of cloud cover and it did get a little warm, but nice breezes to cool back down.
Always love this area and will be back again some day ...

Tuesday special with Addie.
Decided on a trip out to the Pinalenos little brother to the South, the Greasewoods.
First hike back to Bark Trick Tank in 3 years.
Last trip out was a rain soaked disappointed, but today we were met with beautiful blue/partly cloudy skies & 60 degree temps ..... a perfect day to hike!
We first completed the route down to BTT, then continued on down Bar X Canyon a couple more miles. Lunch was had on an impressive rocky quartz outcrop full of little Arizona Rainbow cactus (a great surprise find for this area) with good views down onto the Sulphur Springs Valley & Galiuro mountain range behind. We returned back the way we came with now the Southern Pinalenos as our backdrop. A+ Day outside :D

Plan A was to hike up the Grant Creek Trail #305, but big gloomy purple storm clouds & fog had the whole southwestern Pinalenos socked in with visibility down to almost 0. Had to come up with a plan B on the fly and took off back down Stockton Pass where the storms were not as thick. Chose a hike to Bark Trick Tank in the Greasewoods which I had just discovered a few months earlier and have wanted to see again during the non-hunting season. Took off down the FS road under light on and off rain and made it down to the awesome hidden valley meadow at the trail's end. Spent a short time at the meadow getting my pics as the rain then became a steady pour and never let up the whole hike back, I got soaked! On the drive home I stopped for a bit and hiked through one of the fantastic boulder fields found alongside Stockton Pass road to end this cold & wet, but very fun trip!

After my failed trip a week earlier due to forgetting that it was opening day of the Jr hunt, I headed back out to the Greasewoods to try this one again. At the TH I struck up a nice conversation with a hunter who was camped and getting ready for opening day on Friday and we agreed to meet up at the tank for some glassing. The first 1.5 miles of the trail (unimproved hunting Rd) was a steady climb up the canyon to the hikes high point which had some great views of the southern Pinalenos. The next 1.5 miles dropped down into a hidden valley with a very large & nice meadow surrounding Bark Trick Tank. The hunter I met earlier was at the meadow and I spent the next hour glassing for deer with him. With his $2500 Swarovskis' & my $20 tascos we were able to find 14 deer and a big black bear with her cub high up a mountain side. With the sun starting to go down, I left the hunter to glass as I made my way back up the trail and down to my truck just before dark ending a really nice trip in the Greasewoods!
