The chuckies were active within Hidden Valley and along sections of the Mormon Trail, as well as a large, nonaggressive bee swarm on a ledge at the south side of the tunnel. Because of the extreme heat, completed solo without Dese as an out and back because silly shuttles are for the Fossil Fuels Rule! cult.

Keeping it local we were looking for a 10 mile hike with a little aeg. We don’t visit this trail head too often so getting a start from it was a added bonus.

Took the route idea from a post by Kelly @trekkin_gecko, thanks :)

Nice loop overall, got a little crowded between Hidden Valley and Javelina Canyon but otherwise not too bad.

Nice morning on the SoMo trails.

Morning hike with friends from work. We started on the Holbert trail, adding a half mile to visit Dobbins Lookout before continuing on Holbert. The National Trail with its wonderful views of the Valley is always a treat, as was Hidden Valley. The Mormon trail was busy as we headed down.

It was chilly at the start, but we all had layers to peel away as it warmed up. The sky above was clear blue and beautiful as we cruised along the National Trail. A bit hazy in the distance, but gorgeous in all other respects. It was a great day to be out.

LiLD had not done this route into Hidden Valley. I also wasn't sure if he had hiked National between Holbert and Buena Vista so we decided to do this shuttle hike. We dropped a car at Mormon and drove to Holbert. We started hiking at 5:38. I haven't been on Holbert in awhile and was surprised to see some water damage on two of the wash crossings in the flat section. The rest of the trail was in pretty good shape. LiLD set a good pace  and we were in shade until the first road crossing. We hit Buena Vista in about an hour. I was surprised to see that the runners out numbered the Mtn. bikes today. Some hikers from time to time but not as many as expected for a Pre-Fall day :) . A lady we had seen in Hidden Valley ran passed us when we got on Mormon :STP: : rambo : . Ahh a pace setter. We never ran but LiLD did pick up the pace a little :o . We passed her with a 1/4 mile to go or so. I know it's not a race  . Although it did fell good to get a good sweat on. :D . Thanks, Son!

This is probably the best route to hidden valley I have done so far. A little humid out but it was a great hike with my pops.

Been too long between hikes. Wanted to do something close to home with mileage and this fit the profile. Got to the TH a little after 6am. I was greeted by 2 coyotes before I even got out of the car. They were just standing by the side of the road right where the trail starts. Ironically, as they were eyeing me a rabbit darted off behind them. They took a couple steps in pursuit but quickly gave it up as a lost cause. That was pretty much all the excitement for the entire hike. LOL.

Made decent time on my way up and over. Took the Holbert to the National over to the Mormon and then down to the Mormon TH. On the way back, I basically did the same route though I did throw in Mormon Lookout Point, the Hidden Valley Loop and Dobbins Lookout Point. Not many people out initially, ( I guess 6am is too early for most people), but it started to pick up as the morning wore on. I saw some bikers going up the Guadalupe Ridge Trail from the west end :o . It's a great trail, but not what I would consider bike friendly. Mixed thoughts on this. I'm all for equal access to park trails, however.... The Guadalupe Ridge Trail is great for its rugged beauty and this will be spoiled somewhat by bike use. On the flip side, this trail will be easier to do with the "bike path" being blazed into the terrain. I haven't been up there recently, I will have to see what the trail looks like. The bikers said they do it on a fairly regular basis so it should be noticeable if that is the case.

I didn't see any wildlife except for the coyotes at the beginning of the trail. No Gila monsters, not even a chuckwalla :( . The weather was great! Windy, cool and cloudy but no rain. My left knee really started protesting on my return trip. It didn't want to bend. Very important when walking. It took me almost 3 hours to get back from he Mormon TH. great hike overall, even with the leg acting up.

I had to head out to the west side so I dropped my car off at Mormon trailhead. On the way back Grace was nice enough to drop me off at the Holbert trailhead.Hit the trail around 11:00.It was a lttle windy but nice temps. The sections with boulders and cacti with some clouds thrown in are some of my favorite views! There was one guy that was lost so I turned him around. It gives you a good feeling to be able to help :D .Nice hike! :y:

Did this as a fall back hike without the shuttle. Went in to South Mountain Park not realizing that today was a Silent Sunday, so I changed plans and did the Holbert-Hidden Valley-Mormon Trail. Walked and jogged intermittently throughout. Weather was perfect! Trails were quite crowded throughout.

Met up with Pam at the Mormon Trail TH for my first ever South Mountain hike. We shuttled over to the Central TH and headed up the Holbert Trail. Pretty views and a nice hike. We hooked onto the National Trail and enjoyed easy cruising along the ridgeline. I liked all the little hidden draws along the ridgeline on National - very pretty. We then dropped into Hidden Valley! I was almost too fat for Fatman's Pass, but squeezed through. Of all of South Mountain we did on the hike, Hidden Valley seemed the most familiar to me. Why? It reminded me of Grand Gulch (or White Canyon, or Bridge Canyon, etc.). Lots of wash crossing, negotiating pourovers, scrambling around boulders, and lots of overhanging rocks and some arches. Drop the saguaros, change the rocks to tan and I'd say we were on Cedar Mesa!
We backtracked a little bit on National to get to Mormon. Two huge groups on Mormon Trail, apparently tours. Busier hiking than I'm used to! We made good time down Mormon, and even ran into Denny (tortisehiker) near the bottom! Cool! Back to the truck, then back over to Central so I could drop off Pam. Hit some Phoenix traffic, so I didn't make it home until 4:20, but still - an excellent trip! Looking forward to hiking up at South Mountain again!

Rob decided he wanted to come up into town today and hike something at South Mountain as he has never been there. I've only done one trip there, but I picked a route that was something new for me and something that I thought he would like as well. Rather than an up and back or a loop, I took advantage of the fact that there were two vehicles and did a Shuttle Route. Met Rob at the Mormon TH and we left his car and drove to the Holbert TH. About 10 minutes drive time between TH's so not too bad and parking at both is really good.

Got him started right away in Petroglyph city at the beginning of the Holbert Trail. Pretty cool rock art to get us going. Trail started out nice and level, but then the elevation starts to take over and you're hiking up into a nice little canyon. The views and air quality weren't too bad today, making for some decent pictures. Hit the intersection with National after crossing a couple of roads, (that seems so out of place for me), and headed east towards Hidden Valley.

Right into Hidden Valley we go and I immediately show Rob "Fatman Pass". He's wondering, but I was sure he would be ok and tell him to go for it. No problem! We had fun sliding and scrambling around the rocks and boulders in the valley and came out of the tunnel on the other side and headed for Mormon. I originally took a right on National coming out, but realized my mistake pretty quickly and backtracked to the West, hitting Mormon and starting our descent.

We ran into 2 huge groups of people on Mormon, but after that, very few. About 3/4 of the way down, we see a dude running up the Trail coming towards us. We make a comment about must be some superman dude and as he nears, he kinda looks familiar. As he starts to go by I make a comment about a guy named "Denny" and the dude hits his brakes and says "I'm Denny!" Yep, it was the Turbo Turtle! Introductions all around, a few minutes to chat and we part ways. Get down, Rob gives me a ride to my car and ended a great day. Very cool to meet and hike with Rob and meeting the Tortoise Hiker was a bonus as well... :D

Was amazed at how few people there actually were. Holbert only had a few on it, until you passed the Dobbins Point Parking area and then when you hit Buena Vista, it was pretty crowded. But after about a 1/2 mile past that on National, we pretty much had the trail to ourselves again and I think we were alone in Hidden Valley until the very end. Mormon had the most people but they were in groups mainly and it was later in the day. Enjoyed the solitude of an "Urban Hike".
