Loop around and through the boulders before the heat starts to come in.

Hiking, boulder hopping and scenic viewing.
Such a great place to explore this time of the year.
Found 2 native grinding holes.

This area always amazes me with it's rich native history!
Was first given the specific location I hiked to last year and returned this trip to explore more.
Hiked through some amazing boulder formations before reaching the chosen site.
Found an incredible old native kitchen with 8 grinding holes and approx 8 more in the surrounding area.
Also found was a broken axe head, piece of worked shell & one beautiful intact arrowhead!
Free styling across the Arizona desert in November temps finding history,
it just doesn't get any better for me than this!

2 random miles across Oak Draw :next: Under Stockton Pass through a tunnel :next: 2 random miles across P Ranch Canyon back to the start for the loop.
Spectacular rock formations is what always brings me out there and I saw many new ones on this day.
Dramatic stormy skies and strong winds throughout.
No wildlife spotted, only 1 single poppy seen ... and the find of the day ... one perfect 2 inch arrowhead along a wash! I'm talkin' a top 10 all time arrowhead find for me!
Oak Draw is always good to me!
Quick stop at Dankworth SP for sunset before returning home.

Picked up my buddy at noon and out to Oak Draw we went.
Headed out to a location on a tip from a friend.
Tip came through ... Awesome native site were we found a total of 15 grinding holes in a very scenic boulder area. Only had a few hours to explore, will have to come back out for a day as I'm sure there is a lot more to discover.
Beautiful out there in the overcast sky desert.
Not many wildflowers yet, but plenty of cattle to moo at.
Gotta love friends who give up there secret locations :y:

Hiked a new area for me in the southern east portion of the draw.
Cool area with lots of impressive rock formations.
Got a little warm on this one for the first time this year.
Will return, lots to see in this area.

Back out to Oak Draw.
Hiked out to and around some of my favorite rock formations.
Then out to Bear Canyon.
Wanted to hike up to more rock formations, but big monsoon storms hit and hit hard.
Turned around after only .5 mile and got slammed by rain the whole way back.
Rained on me most of the way back home, Safford got some of it as I found my yard half flooded when I got home.
Wanted more, but a good afternoon spent again in the Draw!

Hiked the western side of the Draw, Gillespie Wash & Hog Canyon.
Just amazingly green across the desert now.
Monsoon skies above all afternoon.
Found some really nice grinding holes in the stream bed up a side canyon.
An afternoon well spent, will be back for a whole day soon.

Explored an area not seen before on the eastern side.
Had a nice hour coffee break along a wash.

2nd attempt following trail #647 to South Tank.
Found most of the trail on this day ... I think?
South Tank was dry, but a lot of fun to hike to!
Desert looked beautiful on this overcast day.
Lots of wildflowers/cactus blooms with a lot more to come in the future.
Crossed under the Hwy tunnel and poked around the boulder formations before leaving.
Good trip, nice May temps.

Trying out the new #647 trail built in 2017 for the first time.
Somehow I missed it and looped the entire mountains it is supposed to run through?
Should have took me to South Tank, but instead I found East Side Tank ... and that's OK
Lots of desert poppies along my route and I ran into my first Gila Monster of the season.
Oak Draw always delivers wonderful scenery no matter where you hike it!
Will try again soon.
:)

Weather Channel promised cloud cover and a high of only 93 so I decided to head out at sunrise and hike this open desert area. I chose a route I have taken before that laps a couple of amazing boulder fields that I never get tired of seeing. The boulders/balanced rocks/arches were awesome as always, but the green blanket of vegetation and wildflowers were the main show. Most variety and best looking wildflowers I've seen all year! And the butterflies were plentiful too. Lots of moisture and standing water made for a very humid morning and by 10am I was done.
Great morning hike in a most favorite place seldom explored in summer ..... Cool Beans!

Warming up, gotta get those favorite desert wanders in.
Drove out at sunrise.
No set route, just freestyling across the desert today.
Hopped in, around & on the cool boulder formations most of the hike.
Found my first poppies in the flats along with many more colors.
Was a bit windy this morning and that kept the temps very cool, it also kept the wildflowers moving making flower photography as frustrating as butterfly photography.
Spotted many good poppy patches along Stockton Pass & Hwy 191 on the drive back home
Enjoyable morning out at the Draw!

Ahhh the Draw ..... I love this area!
Freestyled across a portion of the eastern side to new places unseen.
The boulder formations, valleys & washes were outstanding.
I then hit up a favorite boulder section in P Ranch Canyon before leaving.
Total overcast when I started at noon, total clear skies when I finished up at sunset.
This whole area is loaded with prehistory, but I found nothing new on this trip which is rare.
The area is also loaded with fricknaley scaredys, but none encountered today which is also rare.
I did see a bunny!
Fun trip, lots more to explore out there for years to come.

Day 2 of my 8 Day Trip down South...It was good to Hike with Chad again and see an area that I always thought would be good in the milder Winter/Spring Months...This Area has always intrigued when I've driven it and this was a good time to see it up close and personal....

Grasslands, a few Poppies, multiple, mega Boulder Formations, a very sweet Snake Encounter and an easy grade for most of the Hike made for a pleasant day even though the heavy overcast made the Photography a challenge...It's been awhile since I've done this Mileage with my regular Daypack which I weighted down fairly heavy for Conditioning and I really felt it the last couple of miles. I've needed a decent Hike with weight for awhile and after some Ibuprofen, it was all good... Definitely a very cool area... :)

Finished the Day off with an awesome Sunset and then thieving Raccoons!

Thanks for the Tour Chad, it was a good one! I can see there is a lot more out there that I want to see and do for sure! :D

Met up with Pam at Roper Lake SP and together we traveled out to the Oak Draw/P Ranch Canyon area for my 3rd trip out in 5 days. This was Pam's first (hiking) introduction to this wide scenic area along both sides of 266 (Stockton Pass) so I put together a loop starting down P Ranch Wash, then across 266 and ending with Oak Draw back up. We hiked under overcast skies most of the trip, came across several good poppy patches, saw my first snake of the year & gave Pam a tour of a couple of my favorite boulder formations.

After our hike, we then drove up 266 to the Shake Trail area to catch the sunset.
Then is was back down to Roper Lake for conversation & the always entertaining nightly raccoon show (watch your buns Pam :sl: ) Was a good Day!

Oak Draw ROCKS!
This area along Stockton Pass to the south has no established trails (and never will), just Forest Service roads to wander, so I doubt very many hike back into or even know about the amazing boulder formations within ..... and that's too bad! This afternoon I got a couple of more unexplored miles in and it quickly became one of those hikes that I did not want to see the sun go down. I've really only scratched the surface of this large area on this my 4th trip, but the good news is that I've got the rest of my life to see it all!

I should be up high on my island this time of the year enjoying the much cooler temps, but I woke up today with a strong desire to get a few more miles explored through the Oak Draw desert. I was hoping to find some new prehistoric sites this afternoon, but after a figure 8 across the Draw I found none. That was OK because the other reason I love off-trailing across this area is to wander through & around the amazing boulder formations! I started at 2pm with 100+ deg temps, but the heat was never really a factor today ..... still, I think it's time now for me to get up higher and start enjoying the mountain creeks & pines!

Got out to the Draw a little later this afternoon than I wanted to, so I just stuck to walking the forest service roads. First visited my favorite boulder formations to the east and then headed south for a couple of miles. Found some great new boulder formations & balanced rocks along the way before returning back to the start a little after sunset. Great trip and I think I'll wait till after summer before exploring more of this very scenic area, I need a full day and less heat to properly do this one!
