Oak Draw was so nice the day before that I went right back out.
This trip I went exploring on the other side of Stockton Pass ... P Ranch Canyon.
Petroglyphs, quartz outcroppings and more scenic views on this day.
:D

Started from Gillespie Well and headed east on 1175.
Fun hike through and around the boulder fields.
A few poppies here and there.
Perfect weather.

2 random miles across Oak Draw :next: Under Stockton Pass through a tunnel :next: 2 random miles across P Ranch Canyon back to the start for the loop.
Spectacular rock formations is what always brings me out there and I saw many new ones on this day.
Dramatic stormy skies and strong winds throughout.
No wildlife spotted, only 1 single poppy seen ... and the find of the day ... one perfect 2 inch arrowhead along a wash! I'm talkin' a top 10 all time arrowhead find for me!
Oak Draw is always good to me!
Quick stop at Dankworth SP for sunset before returning home.

Love this time of the year, open desert hiking at it's finest!
Took the wash to one of the petroglyph sites and on down to a cool ranch site.
Bushwacked my was back across the desert.
Had some sun left so I made a trip up Stockton Pass to a rock collecting site shown to me by a friend.
Porphyry (Chinese writing stone) was what I was after.
I found a couple of choice pieces to take home just as the sun was setting.
Open desert, petroglyphs & crystal rocks ... that's a good afternoon out for me!

A buddy gave me a tip on some wash petroglyphs so an afternooner was in order.
A mile in and I was able to locate them ... and they were worth locating!
Spent the next couple hours just exploring the area finding a cool dam, some stock tanks & 4 peccary.
This area and Oak Draw always delivers every trip out, but ... It's starting to get a bit warm out there in the open desert.
Rewarding trip :D

Ahhh the Draw ..... I love this area!
Freestyled across a portion of the eastern side to new places unseen.
The boulder formations, valleys & washes were outstanding.
I then hit up a favorite boulder section in P Ranch Canyon before leaving.
Total overcast when I started at noon, total clear skies when I finished up at sunset.
This whole area is loaded with prehistory, but I found nothing new on this trip which is rare.
The area is also loaded with fricknaley scaredys, but none encountered today which is also rare.
I did see a bunny!
Fun trip, lots more to explore out there for years to come.

Have passed Baker "hill" 100 times in my travels along Stockton Pass road always thinking "one day".
Today was it, parked along Stockton and within one hour I was on top. Baker is no Everest at only 4268 (173 eg), but it was fun mazing up the southeast slope through the cactus field. On top I found 2 markers, a pile of rocks and excellent 360 views! Took a short cookie & coffee break before climbing down the western slope and continuing on up P Ranch Canyon to the first and quite amazing boulder field. Played under, on top & around the boulders for awhile before returning back to the start. No good wildlife spotted until the drive out where a huge mulie buck ran across the road. Baker Peak ..... Check!

Met up with Pam at Roper Lake SP and together we traveled out to the Oak Draw/P Ranch Canyon area for my 3rd trip out in 5 days. This was Pam's first (hiking) introduction to this wide scenic area along both sides of 266 (Stockton Pass) so I put together a loop starting down P Ranch Wash, then across 266 and ending with Oak Draw back up. We hiked under overcast skies most of the trip, came across several good poppy patches, saw my first snake of the year & gave Pam a tour of a couple of my favorite boulder formations.

After our hike, we then drove up 266 to the Shake Trail area to catch the sunset.
Then is was back down to Roper Lake for conversation & the always entertaining nightly raccoon show (watch your buns Pam :sl: ) Was a good Day!

Day 2 of my 8 Day Trip down South...It was good to Hike with Chad again and see an area that I always thought would be good in the milder Winter/Spring Months...This Area has always intrigued when I've driven it and this was a good time to see it up close and personal....

Grasslands, a few Poppies, multiple, mega Boulder Formations, a very sweet Snake Encounter and an easy grade for most of the Hike made for a pleasant day even though the heavy overcast made the Photography a challenge...It's been awhile since I've done this Mileage with my regular Daypack which I weighted down fairly heavy for Conditioning and I really felt it the last couple of miles. I've needed a decent Hike with weight for awhile and after some Ibuprofen, it was all good... Definitely a very cool area... :)

Finished the Day off with an awesome Sunset and then thieving Raccoons!

Thanks for the Tour Chad, it was a good one! I can see there is a lot more out there that I want to see and do for sure! :D

One of my favorite days of the year is April 15th! Today was finally the day that the FS opens up the Swift Trail on the backside & top of the Pinalenos :y: Only problem was yesterday's morning storm dumped a more than expected amount of new snow on the top half of the mountains. I drove up knowing that is was probably enough to ruin my opening day upper forest hike plans, and it was :( I started hitting snow at Arcadia (6700 ft) and immediately turned around and drove back down the mountain for plan B. Plan B was something along Stockton Pass and after parking at Gillespie Well and having a 10 minute argument with myself over which trail, I just stayed put and hiked along P Ranch Canyon through, around & over the awesome boulder fields. I was bummed to not be hiking on top of the mountain, but P Ranch Canyon is always a very cool & scenic place to explore! I just hope that the new snow on top melts quickly, I have made some recent plans for up there.

Plan A was to hike a new trail in the Greasewood Mnts, arrived at the TH to find about a dozen guys in camo, Crap! I forgot that it was opening day of the Jr hunt. Plan B was the Shake trail, more hunters. Plan C was the Bear Canyon trail, more hunters. I almost gave up and drove back home, but decided on an old hike I use to do many years ago along P Ranch Canyon. Drove back down Stockton Pass and into the canyon on an unnamed jeep road. Hiked up the wash to Gillespie Well then back. The rock formations in this canyon are quite impressive with many balanced rocks and a few small arches. Left the canyon after dark and for the first time this fall I had to turn on the heater for the drive home!
