This was a hike to a couple of peaks in the Pategonia Mountains of Southern Arizona:
1) Veterans Peak (elevation of 7,200 feet and prominence of 425 feet)
2) Mount Washington (elevation of 7,221 feet and prominence of 1,709 feet)

Mount Washington is the high point of the range.

I parked along the well graded Duquesne Road.

There was a use trail of sorts most of the way to these heavily forested peaks. It wasn't bushwhacking per se, but there were lots of tree limbs and tree branches that would smack you in the head and face along the way. I was wishing that I had worn one of those masks that hockey goalies wear!

I went up to Veterans Peak first and then Mount Washington. I reversed course on the way back so I summitted Veterans twice.

There were several boulders on Veterans that I tagged in order to be sure to make it to the high point. I am not sure which one of the boulders was higher, but I figure that I got the high point. There was a cairn on Mount Washington marking the obvious high point; the cairn also contained a summit register, which I signed.

Neither summit had much in the way of views -- too many trees. There were some occasional nice views along the hike though.

There was a good bit of trash from illegals along the way, but it did not look very recent. I saw some bear scat in a few places, and it did not look very recent either.

It was an enjoyable day out there, but the going was slow with all the tree branches to deal with. This would not be a good hike for a casual hiker.

This was stop #2/3 on the hike from Duquesne road to Washington peak. Stop #1 was Peak 7000. This hike has a lot of up and down but with a steady pace, it wasn't too taxing. Jim and I found some decent trails going most of the way to Veterans peak. We needed to bushwhack a bit going down from Peak 7000 and near the top of Veterans peak. In some places we lost the trail, but were able to find the trail again within minutes by either following the ridgeline or by following an old barbed wire fence.

At the top of the peak, there was a small tower that was about 40 feet tall with some nearby solar panels. We thought this may have been used for communications. We found and signed a registry that was under some rocks at the very top, within 10 feet of the tower.

Others have mentioned this, but I thought I'd also mention that along the trails, we found a lot of debris left by border crossers including jackets, backpacks, shirts, pants, socks, cans, plastic bottles, paper and plastic wrappers, blankets and sleeping bags. We didn't see any people but this appears to be a route that was used and maybe is still in use today.

Note: The entire trip was 3,310 AEG. I'll put all elevation stats on the trip to Washington peak (stop #3 of 3).

Hard to believe I chose this hike as I regretted it almost immediately, and looked longingly at Mt Wrightson wishing I was on that beauty today, enjoying the scenery. I lost interest in Mount Washington after Veterans Peak. Yes, a crude intermittent route some call a trail does exist in sections, but the most important sections seem to lack it. The slope over the TH, being the most prominent.

Went with my hiking group.... on the premise that it was going to be bushwhack. Not really, thanks to all the previous HAZ'ers that have cleared up much of the route.

The route was not hard to find with all the litter dumped by illegal aliens.

Most enjoyable was the fact that 70% of the hike was in the shade. All the up and down and up and down and up and down would have sucked in full sun exposure. One and done for me. Veterans/Washington double summits, bagged and tagged.

Hiked up on a warm morning, checking out the trail I cleared years ago. Trail was quite distinct all the way to Veteran's Peak, which was as far as I had water to go. All was quiet, but there was plenty of trash from UDAs. View was hazy from Veteran's Peak. Saw several groups of BP working the roads on the way back. Next time, I'll go all the way to Washington. The trail seems to go to the border, but that could be risky.

Checked out Veteran's Peak with the Fraleys. Lost the trail at first and ended up blazing a few game trails. Lots of evidence of bobcat activity in the area (that, and migrant).

Superfun hike into the remote Patagonia mountains near the Mexican border with my dad, Jeff MacE and his sister. First time into this range was a charm as we bushwhacked up a nameless peak to pick up an unmarked (but not unused) route leading out to Veteran's Peak, just 10 feet shy of the range highpoint (Mt. Washington).

This part of the range offers spectacular views into Mexico as well as the southern face of Mt. Wrightson and the Santa Ritas. Lot of other cool stuff out here, cool drive in too.

Definitely evidence of border crossing here. We got buzzed by a border patrol chopper halfway in. Our truck was still there when we got back, so that was cool too.
