It had been a year since I had done this hike, and with the temperature in the 50's I decided to head up to Payson and do this hike again.

There was very little water in Salt Lick Canyon, so the creek crossings were a non issue.

Water flow in Hellsgate was light to moderate. Normally there is heavy water flow there at this time of year.

The trail seems to get more and more eroded -- there is lots of loose, rubbly, ankle-busting rock to deal with these days.

There is lots of up-and-down on this trail, and it is more up on the way back, which makes for a tough hike. I am glad that it was a cool day!

Four-star hike with a two-star approach drive. No car will make it to Smoky Hollow TH. It doesn't matter if one uses FR133 (longer) or FR1673 (less gates), both are slow grueling rock crawls. Your wheeler might take some punishment via scratches and skid plate scrapes. This southern hike is shorter than its northern counterpart though. Similar in that the first section follows an old two track until crossing lower Smoky Hollow. The rest of the way from there stays above the creek bed and is a bit obscure and overgrown. Creek levels were low, so I crossed Haigler and explored upstream until being stopped by a large pool. I also was able to cross Tonto Creek without getting wet below where the northern route ends at the camp. There was only one guy, and his dog camped at the sunnier southern camp. He also hauled out some trash that I couldn't fit in my pack. Returned via FR133 which was 11.6 miles and 1h 7m total to pavement. Next time in this area, I'll car camp in the area to make it more worthwhile.

I decided to head to the Hellsgate Wilderness today and hike down to Hellsgate -- this was the 5th or 6th time that I have done this hike.

There was more water in Salt Lick Canyon than I have seen in the past -- without waterproof footwear you'll get your socks and feet wet in some of the numerous creek crossings in this canyon.

Not surprisingly, there was lots of water flowing in Hellsgate at the confluence of Tonto Creek and Haigler Creek. It was a nice place to stop for lunch before making the climb back out.

I did not see anyone on the hike today, which wasn't too surprising for a weekday.

This is not an easy out-and-back hike -- about 70% of the elevation gain is on the way back.

I saw some phlox, wiry lotus, and manzanita blooming; but that was about it. It is a bit early for flowers in this area.

Dese and my second trip here, Kriket's first (and likely her last). Our thoughts were that it's a proper hike and essentially comparable to three quarters of a S.Kaibab to BA Campground day hike, sans the stunning GC views. There's some overgrowth and deadfalls in sections and trail washouts, but not too bad when compared to some Supes trails. It was neat to experience the area when the trees were leafless and the creek turbid. Took us less time to hike out. :-k

My original plan was to hike the middle Highline, but the updated forecast mentioned high winds and much cooler air temps than expected. At the last minute, I switched to taking Dese hiking in lieu of the more involved motorcycle shuttle. It turned out well, starting early with cool temps and mostly sunny skies. The route is actually quite similar to the Highline, basically mundane, but with more overgrowth, more elevation change and a bigger payout at the end. Tonto Creek at the terminus reminded me a lot of Bright Angel Creek in GCNP. It's definitely a beautifully peaceful area. On our return, it was maxim Mogollon May, in that it was sunny and sprinkling, overcast and hailing, and windy with four thunder boomers. It seemed to be much more stormy, briefly to the south. We traversed over Apache Ridge on the return just for poos and giggles. This route would be brutal in the summer heat.

I had not done this hike in a couple of years so I decided to check it out today.

There was water in the creek crossings within about 2 miles of the TH. This section was a nice part of the hike.

There was plenty of water flowing at the confluence in Hells Gate.

It was a sunny day but the temperatures were pleasant. I would not want to come back out of Hells Gate on a hot day (about 70% of the elevation gain on this hike is on the way back).

On the way to Hells Gate, not far before El Grande Tank, I bagged the Hells Gate Ridge highpoint, which was only 200-300 feet off of the trail.

I did not see another person on the entire hike. I think that this was the first time that I had Hells Gate all to myself. I could easily have spent the entire day in Hells Gate.

There were a few wildflowers in the meadow above Hells Gate, but that was about it. With the cooler than normal winter, flowers in this area won't be much until later this month.

My second hike of the day to find another geocache, Hell's Border, hidden just outside the Hell's Gate wilderness boundary.

If you have the right vehicle, you can drive there. I wouldn't want to take my Taco there but maybe the Subaru fans wouldn't mind giving it a go.

Trail 37 is road for most of the way, except for one detour from the road to shorten the distance and alleviate the climbing. Of course, I walked up the road on the way out. It was pretty steep as it descended back to 37. On the return, I took the trail; I was getting tired.

There was water flowing in most all the creeks the trail goes along or crosses. Not a lot, but enough to watch where I stepped along the way. Who wants wet feet?

As it was getting late in the day, and I had done another hike earlier in the day, I turned around at the wilderness boundary instead of continuing down into hell.

Hadn't been down to Hell's Gate in 4 years, and it seemed like good weather for it: warm enough to swim, but not so hot that the hike out is completely miserable. The jeep road section the first few miles is a little tricky to navigate if you don't have a map - would it kill the FS to put in trail signs at the junctions?

There are also a few spots where singletrack diverges from the Jeep road, and these are very easy to miss, but no big deal since they meet back up. Once off the Jeep roads for good, the main challenge was generally chunky terrain and cow paths diverging all over the place... Seems to be more of them than there were 4 years ago.

Explored the confluence area for an hour or more, and decided to swim up to the end of the narrows, where there was a small waterfall. Nothing impressive, but worth it for the nice, refreshing swim.

Hike out was uneventful, and a nice breeze took some of the edge off the warmth.

It had been 6 months that I have hiked in the Payson area, so I decided to change that today.

It turned out to be a nice day for a hike -- it was barely cool enough for me to enjoy this hike.

There was no water in the creek crossings today, so there was no issue to keep my feet dry.

There was a decent amount of water at the Tonto Creek confluence, but not as much water as normal.

There were 2 people fishing at the confluence, but they were the only people that I saw all day long.

This is a fun hike, but it is a tough one -- 70% of the elevation gain is on the way back.

The trail was generally rocky and slippery, so I did not go any faster downhill than I went uphill.

Did the full length of Hell's Gate 37 with a friend in January and have been waiting for the right day to go back and try this loop. Wintery day in mid-March seemed perfect. Started at the Hell's Gate TH at 7:30am and went counterclockwise.

Wanted to save the unfamiliar sections for the end. Easier to slog through country you're seeing for the first time. Many cows on Hell's Gate who have carved lots of alternative trails. Accidentally took one down to Grande Tank. Was down to Hell's Gate in a little over two hours. Hung out for a while and filtered some water before heading up.

It's easy to connect Hell's Gate and Big Ridge. Meadowy ridge with no bushwacking. Made it up to peak 5138 and the next few miles were my favorite of the day. Great weather for it with wintery clouds and a cold breeze blowing through. Fun ridge walk down to Big Ridge trail and along the road. Lots of cows for company. Saw a dozen deer and a coyote. Big Ridge Trail is an OHV track, and I met two hunters who drove to the bottom Salt Canyon in search of coyotes. Gave up the one I saw farther down the trail and carried on. They were the only people I saw on the day. Trail climbs and the views widen until around Horse Mountain where it enters a pine forest.

Down to Bear Flat Trail which I found nicest by the trailhead. OHV road and trail where it crosses through the wilderness area. It's in good shape but I got confused around Upper Bull Canyon Tank and briefly got sidetracked. No water in the canyon, but there's water I would't personally drink in every cattle tank along the way.

Tonto a strong flow by Bear Flat. Road might as well be paved between the trailheads. Beautiful five mile walk through the pines. Little bit of traffic on 405 but not much on 405A apart from the campers.

A friend and I hadn't been to Hell's Gate in a few years, and neither of us had done the South end of the trail. Started at 6:30 and walked for an hour in the dark.

Cows everywhere on the way in. Trail's the same as it's ever been to Hell's Gate. From there the trail was in good shape. A little overgrown and faint in a couple spots but no trouble. Eventually it switchbacks out of Smoky Hollow Canyon to the ridge. Turns into a two track that is steep and slippery but easy to follow to the road.

At the road we met a guy who had driven out to the southern th and was going to descend down to Tonto. Road in is reportedly slow going but not bad with 4x4 and some clearance.

Started toward Winter Camp but decided to save that for another day. Headed back the way we came and saw one backpacker on the way out.

Ventured into Tonto Creek and Hellsgate Wilderness with a few friends. Instead of going in from the Little Green Valley on the Payson side we hit the dirt roads on the Young side for access at Smoky Hollow trailhead. The drive is longer and more tedious than the Payson side but the hike is shorter. Of course, being August it was hot but the water temps more than compensated. We set up camp at the confluence of Tonto and Haigler creeks at the entrance to Hells Gate.

Next day we ventured up Tonto Creek into Hells Gate and basically floated around the pools all day. Very relaxing way to spend the day avoiding the heat. After exploring some and mostly floating we headed back to camp for another warm night. This is the first trip where I did not bring a sleeping bag. I just used a liner that was my sleeping bag and it worked out great.

Next morning, we packed up and headed out. It was hot but really not that bad and we had some early cloud cover from developing storms that kept it cooler. A few rain drops as we reached the vehicles but nothing significant. One side not about this trip is normally I would avoid places like Tonto in the middle of monsoon. The water is usually mucked up and the threat of flash flood. However, the lack of rain/monsoon activity made this more like a June trip. Fun weekend for all!!

I had originally intended to do this hike in March, but it snowed a bit the day before I had planned to go, so I decided to put this one of for a few weeks.

This was a nice hike, although it was a bit warmer than I would have preferred. We left early, and the hike was a good one all the way to Hell's Gate. The water flow was pretty good down there, and the pool there was fine for swimming if you didn't mind the water being a bit cold. If someone wanted to you could have waded up Haigler Creek.

The hike out was a good uphill climb for a bit, which was a good workout on a warm day. On the way back we met a few people on the trail -- people are heading to the forest on the weekends.

Deciding to escape the rising temperatures of the valley we wanted to find a trail that is relatively accessible but less popular (social distancing and all :) ) and in the end we settled on Hell's Gate Trail that we wanted to follow till the wilderness boundary. Well we were wrong on the social distancing part at least on the first mile of the trail - parking lot was more or less full and we met a lot of people returning (we had a late start) but for the rest of the trail we met only two more people. The trail sometimes follows the old road (which is still driven as we met an ATV along the way) and sometimes deviates from it cutting some of the sections of the road. The deviations are mostly well marked as long as you keep an eye out for the cairns/signs. There are quite a few up and downs but we enjoyed the trail, walking by the flowing creek was a highlight with birds singing and butterflies everywhere (buckeyes mostly) and then the great views as we were approaching the boundary. We had a snack near the boundary marker enjoying the views before returning back to the car just as the sun was setting.

It had been about 5 months since I had been to Payson, and I had never hiked to Hellsgate, so I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone and hike from the Hell's Gate TH to Tonto Creek.

There were quite a few creek crossings for the first and last 2.5 miles of the hike. I managed to do enough rock hopping to keep my feet dry.

I thought that this hike was VERY scenic. I didn't see any wildlife, but there were quite a few signs of elk in the area.

The descent over the last 1/4 mile down to Hell's Gate was really steep -- it was much better coming back up than it was going down.

There was lots of water in the confluence of Haigler Creek and Tonto Creek. Here is a video: [ youtube video ]

There were several creek crossings over the first couple of miles of the hike. I managed to keep my feet dry, but had to do a good bit of rock hopping to do so.

This is definitely a hike that I will do again. I imagine that it could be a hot hike in the summertime though.

Went down Hellsgate via the Young side. The roads to the trailhead are not great, but also aren't the worst I've ever driven. Definitely 4wd though.

Surprisingly despite what I imagine is almost no visitation, this side of the trail is in pristine shape the first 2 miles, likely due to well thought out construction. The last half mile to the creek suffers from erosion and overgrown bushes. Also, the trail stays high on ledges, where HAZbot suggests it goes down the main drainage. This was much easier than anticipated and I was happy with the way my trip had started.

I was surprised to find 15 cows grazing in Haigler creek around the Tonto intersection. I thought grazing was illegal in a wilderness area in the protected riparian areas. They sure made a mess of things as all the campsites have been filled with cowpies. They were very annoying and one might have a leg injury but it was hard to tell.

The next day I headed up Haigler, I made maybe 2ish miles in 6 hours. It sure is beautiful but all the swimming and head-high poison ivy on the brief respites from swimming really slowed me down. Worried about making my planned exit spot I scoped out a doable exit route and cut short my day, deciding to leave the rest of my trip for another time. I discovered my drybag leaked which left me in a sticky situation with a soaked sleeping bag. Luckily it doesn't get that cold down there and I had enough other stuff that was able to dry out before nightfall to get through the night relatively comfortably.

Last day I climbed and bushwhacked my way back to the road. Smartest decision I made the whole trip was to start the bushwhack climbing before sunrise to take advantage of the shade. Not a route I would recommend but it did get me back.

I didn't see any water in this area of the drainage, but the map suggests this is way up the side of the canyon. I didn't leave the trail to investigate.

I've knocked out more than a few miles in the Hellsgate Wilderness with Joel. Most have involved slow, but spectacularly scenic miles in Haigler Creek, negotiating pools, waterfalls, cascades, bypasses, and most everything an Arizona wilderness area can serve up.

When he suggested this one recently, I was quickly on board. Having never hiked the actual #37 trail, I was happy to try it out on this day/night schedule. The hike in was pleasant, the temperature warm and the cool spring water refreshing to get into at the bottom. We ventured separate ways at the confluence, where I headed up Haigler to finish off the only mile of the creek I hadn't previously covered. This section provided surprisingly nice scenery, and unanticipated slow going, including 5 deep swimmers that I didn't expect.

With time a concern, I didn't want to retrace my steps and then fight the upstream current going up Tonto to where I'd expect to find Joel, so I took the cross-country route, climbing ~600 feet to cross the peninsula between the two creeks and then headed down Tonto toward Hellsgate.

I've been impressed with Haigler since my early introduction in the 90s. Tonto down near Hellsgate is even more impressive. The Hellsgate to Gisela trip remains on my to-do list, and now I'm certain that I'd like to do the whole Tonto from Bear Flat too. It looks like it could have some special places.

Eventually, I got far enough downstream that I found Joel. I kept going to the confluence and changed into dry clothes. Joel returned a while later and after a short fire to dry out and warm up, we headed out at 8pm for the 7+ miles back to the trailhead. The temperature was cool and there was occasionally a nice breeze that made for a perfect startlit evening for this hike. We hadn't been talking much on the steep climb, so as we passed El Grande Tank, I decided to talk loudly, knowing that this would be a prime spot for a predator to keep watch. As Joel remarked that it was almost certain a cat was keeping an eye on the tank, he panned his headlamp up the slope and caught the eyes of a lion that just sat and observed us as we hiked by. Sometimes it's nice to be hiking with two people!

A bit later I caught glimpse of what might have been another lion, but seemed smaller so I'm going to say it was a bobcat, and I also got to within a couple of feet of an owl in the trail that waited until the last second to fly away and absolutely scared the poop out of me. My headlamp made it clear that I had scared the poop out of it too. Literally.

A couple of cats down, and a crazy-close owl experience had us on alert, but the remaining glowing eyes belonged to cows. Still those future burgers managed to grab our attention for a split second too!

Good times in the wilderness. It was a long day, and I was happy to crawl into bed after 0100.
