St Clair Peak looked kind of interesting, and fit the criteria for a weekday hike with Jill. First 1.30 miles or so followed a dirt road, then at about another half mile on a fainter dirt road. The offtrail up the northwest side of the peak was quite steep. We made short switchbacks up to a rock outcropping. After that, it was a milder ascent up to the summit.

We looked around the summit for a few minutes, then over to the ruins where we stopped for a break. Nice views in all directions. Cool breeze. Saw a javelina when we started our descent. I took a slightly better path downhill below the outcropping. Recent rain made the ground more forgiving as well. Once back on the old road, it was an easy walk back to the jeep. Saw three quail hunters as we were finishing, they didn’t seem to be having much success.

Nice little hike. Probably not one I’d do very often, but good to do something new.

I went for the rock piles, but signed the register since I was there. I ascended and descended from the saddle and used the official route for the approach.

A hunter was sitting at the kiosk gutting a haul of Gambel’s quail when I started, but apart from him, I had the area to myself as one would expect. I started just after noon and finished up a little before 2:30 p.m. A little warm at times during the approach, but some cloud cover and a light breeze made for a downright pleasant stroll back to the car.

Wanted to hike to the top of Saint Clair Peak to see the Native American ruins and find a geocache (GC9NW6B). Parked near a gate to an off-road trail and headed off. The start of the trail makes you crawl over a locked gate, as the first ~1.2 miles used to be an old jeep trail. At ~0.2 miles in I passed a water well. Once I made it to ~1.4 miles in I reached a fork in the road, where the jeep trail continued right, I went left on a very overgrown jeep/foot trail.

Once I reached ~1.8 miles in, the overgrown jeep/foot trail ended. This is where the trail became hard, as I had to climb ~400 ft up the mountain to the ruins. There is also no trail, so you are bushwacking the entire way up. This part took me the longest, looks of catclaw, and it became a challenge to avoid them. I should have worn pants instead of shorts, my legs were scratched to hell once I was done.

Eventually made it to the ruins and continued up to the summit where the geocache was located. Made it to the summit and found the geocache (.30 cal ammo container), which also contains the original summit log. I did not stay long at the summit as there are gnats everywhere. Took a break at the ruins before I started the hike down. I started later than I wanted and off the trail at 10:30, ended up drinking 3.5 liters of water on the hike.

We started the morning at Camp Creek Falls, then drove ~15 minutes to the trailhead for this one. We parked along the east side of Horseshoe Dam Road since the parking area on the west side just to the north was getting a little crowded. We crossed the locked gate and started on FR 1104, which immediately passes a water catchment, then takes a fairly circuitous route toward St. Clair Peak and its lesser neighbor to the northwest. I wasn't expecting to see anyone, but we passed two people with a dog early on.

We decided to hike up to the lower peak first, and I found a few pot sherds at the base before we started the ascent. We made a straight shot up the south side of the lower peak...it was a steady incline but not very brushy or loose. There wasn't anything unusual up there other than a concrete cross with a hole for a flagpole and some nice views toward Horseshoe Reservoir and the Mazatzals.

From there, we dropped down to the saddle and started up the north side of St. Clair Peak. It looked steeper from a distance but wasn't a bad climb. The lower portion, especially, was mostly clear of brush and had minimal loose rock. Higher up, there were more dense, thick branches to avoid, but nothing too sharp or pokey.

Once on top, we headed over to the ruins first. I agree with the assessment in a few of the other triplogs that these are okay, but not spectacular, but it was nice to check them out. There were low stacks of rocks, possibly outlining a few rooms, and two higher walls along the outside that may have seen some modern restacking. There was very limited pottery up there--We only found a few small pieces, though TboneKathy did find one large pot sherd ~4 inches across as we left to go up to the peak.

It took a minute or two to find the summit register, which was well hidden under a large rock. The original register--a small glass jar placed by Bob Moore in 2020--was inside a plastic box placed last year with a new notebook. The original register consisted of some brittle, water damaged pages that included some familiar HAZ names. We ate a snack and signed the new register notebook, the first entries in ~10 months. The temperature wasn't bad, but the wind chill was cold at the top...my fingers were so numb that my handwriting regressed to kindergarten level.

Next up was Indian Butte, and we went down the east side of the mountain. It was fairly steep at the top, but again nothing too loose or brushy. We circled around east/northeast of St. Clair though an area full of granite boulders reminiscent of the Ballantine area, and I found a few more random pot sherds. We made our way south to hill 3629 and picked up an OHV road that took us east toward Indian Butte, and we passed another hiker and a bow hunter.

We left the road again near Indian Spring and approached the butte on the south side of the spring. There were a series of concrete troughs with pipes near the spring, and though we didn't go down to the spring itself, we could see a little water down in the drainage. TboneKathy waited by the spring while I made a quick trip up to the peak, where I found a register in the summit cairn, once again placed by Bob Moore, who placed this one in 2020, 19 years after he placed the original one on St. Clair Peak.

We retraced our route back to hill 3629, then followed FR 4011 south before leaving the road and cutting back to the northeast to complete a wide circle around St. Clair Peak. A few things of note on the way out: several green gourds of unknown origin in a wash, a random hill with a rusty sign on top that has names scratched into it from 40+ years ago, and another fairly large piece of pottery.

Back near the trailhead, we took a closer look at the water catchment setup before we wrapped up the hike. Between Camp Creek Falls in the morning and these two peaks, it was a good day checking out some new areas for the first time, and as far as off-trail hiking goes, it was pretty tame--I don't think I picked up any serious scratches along the way :).

This seemed like a nice choice for an afternoon hike with my grandson, Michael. The access is off of the Horseshoe Reservoir Rd about 1.8 miles mile from its intersection with the Bartlett Dam Road and before the pavement ends. There is no formal trail but following the official gps track takes you along old 4x4 tracks which eventually degenerate into a single trail leading to the saddle between St Clair Peak and a lesser unnamed peak on its northwest side. From there to the peak it is very steep and close to being a scramble over loose granite gravel and scattered rocks while avoiding the occasional catclaw. This reduced my rate to a crawl while my grandson scampered ahead unimpeded with plenty of time to do some extra exploring while waiting for me.

We proceeded from the saddle more or less traversing around to the northeast side of the peak to find a less steep approach. Although the approach was not quite as steep, getting there required crossing or going around several steep sided ravines. We followed a faint trail on which I was surprised to see a fairly recent dirt bike track in and out of those ravines. I now realize that what appear to be numerous hiking trails in this area when viewed from the peak are most likely dirt bike trails.

Reaching the peak we took time to take in the views and to eat a late lunch. Then a short visit to the ruins The ruins are similar to many hilltop ruins with what may have been a surrounding wall with only two rooms inside. Perhaps a lookout or maybe a site for religious type ceremonies with no one living there. In explaining this to Michael I said maybe the ruin was like a church to the ancients - perhaps it was St Clair's Church. He wasn't buying it. From the ruins we proceeded to search for a shorter and hopefully less hazardous route for the descent partially guided by the official HAZ gps track. I managed to make the descent without resorting to butt sliding. With Michael scampering ahead and doing some route finding for a safe route for his grandpa we were shortly back on the trail at the northwest base of the peak. This took some direction from me because Michael's normal idea of route finding is to pick the most challenging route requiring the most rock climbing.

Started by walking under the fence in a tiny ravine. Walked the road and then thru a little tributary then the Ridgeline. catclaw was annoying at times but not too bad. Nice summit views. Took an express route down then up the sub peak and then a somewhat direct route to vehicle avoiding catclaw at every chance.

My beloved had the crude so with my faithful hiking dogger Tus we set out toward St. Clair Pk. I had planned to just go through the saddle and check out the boulder outcroppings on the east side. But when I got there I said to myself I have wanted to go to the top of this mountain for over forty years. Why not! Well about mid way up as I clawed my way through the brambles and loose rock, three things occurred to me. A. I have no phone, B. I'm at the awkward stage of my life where I have no health insurance and C. That thing about with age comes wisdom thing is highly over rated. Alas I made it to the top with minor blood loss. I found the summit jar by accident and realized it had been HAZified. Who knew? The ruin was ok and on the way back came upon a nice cultivation site with lots of pottery, broken metate and check dams.

Hippy
Hippy wanted to see some ruins and Devin was willing to drive. Our original plan was to go up the 17 but we decided to do something closer to home. We drove up in the morning and headed up Horseshoe Dam Road where we started following Hansenaz's track from last month. The route starts off following a dirt road. There is a spiderweb of roads and we did a combination of off trail and on trail to reach the first satellite peak. There is nothing of interest besides the flag holder in the shape of a cross. From there we dropped back to the saddle and then headed to the main summit. Once on top we found a small register and we signed HAZ in. There are no ruins on the true summit. The walls sit down below on a mesa. We checked out the area and didn't find anything else besides the walls. We couldn't even find pieces of pottery. From the ruins we bushwhacked back down to the road and returned to the truck. These ruins are just okay.

We had to walk a ways down a winding dirt road to finally reach a hill we all went our own ways up the hill, found a flag holder up top then we regrouped and played follow the Hippy to the saddle and around to what seemed to be the less steep side of St. Clair Peak. Pretty hidden valley on that side.
Then up we went to the peak, explored the top and spotted the ruins which consist of one "hippy sized wall" and some shorter walled rooms. Didn't find any pottery up here but the views were fantastic!!
Scrambled down the steep side and back to the little double track road and to the truck.

Lovely day for some ruin hunting!

I knew three things about St. Clair Peak: the 1998 log from Mazatzal stating "there's a wall up there", the satellite view showing a bit more extensive structure, and while there has been a lot of archaeology work in the Horseshoe Reservoir area, none involved St. Clair Peak.

I also wondered where the name came from since a neighbor (with a well known hilltop ruin) on the other side of the road is called St. Clair Mountain...alas even 5min. on the internet didn't tell me.

There's a locked gate along Horseshoe Rd. roughly due west of the peak and I parked near there and walked the road. Fresh jeep tracks - the road does get used by someone. This one is in pretty good shape but a lot of the other old tracks I'd follow today haven't seen a vehicle for a long time.

I went up the NW satellite peak first. Didn't notice much of interest but there was a concrete cross on top. Nice broad saddle and a steep pull up to the top of St. Clair Pk. No cairn but a glass jar register with a few names from 2013 and 2001 (?). The "ruin" is just down the hill to the south on a level section. A confusing thing with a long wall and some discrete rooms. The higher walls looked like they'd been restacked but the rooms suggest ancient - I only saw 4 or 5 pottery sherds.

Further east is Indian Butte and I decided to head over there. Sort of an attractive route to drop off the north side of St. Clair and pick up some old tracks that stay on the ridge tops for a while. There are interesting rock formations along the way.

I bypassed the Indian Spring thicket on the right following what has to have been a Javalina track (I saw a half-dozen of them parallel across the draw and the track effortlessly went under low hanging branches). Pretty nice trail.

Top of Indian Butte has a large cairn but I didn't see a register. Nice view of the Bartlett Lake area and points east from the top. In spite of the name didn't notice any habitation signs, not even the odd sherd which were more common near St. Clair Pk.

I descended the NW ridge and took the maze of tracks back to the car. Only person I saw all day was a quail hunter and his hounds. Pretty enjoyable day.

Took an off trail route over to St Clair Peak from the Bartlett Rd and then east up to the saddle and south to the summit. One wall up here.
