This was a hike to a couple of peaks in the Pategonia Mountains of Southern Arizona:
1) Veterans Peak (elevation of 7,200 feet and prominence of 425 feet)
2) Mount Washington (elevation of 7,221 feet and prominence of 1,709 feet)

Mount Washington is the high point of the range.

I parked along the well graded Duquesne Road.

There was a use trail of sorts most of the way to these heavily forested peaks. It wasn't bushwhacking per se, but there were lots of tree limbs and tree branches that would smack you in the head and face along the way. I was wishing that I had worn one of those masks that hockey goalies wear!

I went up to Veterans Peak first and then Mount Washington. I reversed course on the way back so I summitted Veterans twice.

There were several boulders on Veterans that I tagged in order to be sure to make it to the high point. I am not sure which one of the boulders was higher, but I figure that I got the high point. There was a cairn on Mount Washington marking the obvious high point; the cairn also contained a summit register, which I signed.

Neither summit had much in the way of views -- too many trees. There were some occasional nice views along the hike though.

There was a good bit of trash from illegals along the way, but it did not look very recent. I saw some bear scat in a few places, and it did not look very recent either.

It was an enjoyable day out there, but the going was slow with all the tree branches to deal with. This would not be a good hike for a casual hiker.

This was stop #3 of 3 and roughly the halfway point of my trip. Coming down from Veterans Peak, we lost the trail a few times and found this area to be the hardest part to navigate the entire day. Jim lost interest in going to Washington peak so he decided to wait for me while I bagged it. It was already 2:30 pm by this time and I was hoping to finish the roundtrip hike before dark, which I ended up doing in the end. In the rocky area below Veterans peak, there really wasn't a good trail, but after I got a few hundred feet lower in elevation, continuing down the ridgeline, I did pick up a nice trail which basically kept going all the way to Washington peak. There were times I lost the trail, but I was able to find the trail again within a few minutes by staying on top of the ridgeline or by follow an old barbed wire fence. I was able to continue and make good time. When I got to Washington peak, I saw a rock pile and a registry which I signed. In a little over 2 years, there were only 5 names on the registry including mine. I would have guessed that more would have hiked it. At the peak, there were a lot of oak, pinion and juniper trees. Because of all of the trees, views were not possible from the high point. I hiked South another 500 feet or so and found a clearing where I could look South, see into Mexico, and also see the border wall. I saw the border wall stretching from the West to somewhere down below and then it appeared to end. I also saw a road near the wall that I'm sure was patrolled. The area looked pretty rural and there wasn't much down there. But, I took some great photos, got some great video and I was very glad that I made it to this point. I left the summit around 3:20 PM and made it all the way back to Duquesne road by 5:50 PM, just before dark.

AEG & distance posted for this triplog are based on starting from Veterans peak, which is on the same ridgeline.

Note: My total AEG was 3,310. My GPS route includes going to Peak 7000, Veterans Peak, and Washington Mountain.

Went with my hiking group.... on the premise that it was going to be bushwhack. Not really, thanks to all the previous HAZ'ers that have cleared up much of the route.

The route was not hard to find with all the litter dumped by illegal aliens.

Most enjoyable was the fact that 70% of the hike was in the shade. All the up and down and up and down and up and down would have sucked in full sun exposure. One and done for me. Veterans/Washington double summits, bagged and tagged.
