With a 10 mile predawn track already under my soles, I decided a quick bag of 9L for the first time in a couple of years was an appropriate cherry on my Sundae morning. It still doesn't have a real name, but at least it seems that the Spook error has been corrected from most sources. It's nice that the property owner continues to allow access as I know it's a favorite workout track for neighborhood folks.

Met up with some friends from out of town for lunch in Apache Junction. On the way there, I went by this very familiar bump next to the road and thought, hmmm. Might be a good one to test the knee on a little more downhill. So after lunch, on the way home, I decided to go for it, even though I was just in tennis shoes. Haven't really done much uphill in the last year either and even with all the PT I'd been doing, I could feel it. The downhill was a pleasant surprise. While I could feel it, there was no pain and very little discomfort. I certainly wasn't going all out on the downhill, but my knee seemed to loosen up as I went, and my confidence built up a little bit, so I was moving faster than I thought I would. Even though I'm not quite done with PT yet, and my knee is probably only about 85% or so, it's the confidence that will ultimately be the biggest troublemaker. Will be looking to do at least a couple more hikes this next week, including a real peak and then make the ultimate decision about the New Year's Day Hike. Stay tuned.

Quite a bit of evidence of the heavy rains recently. Mostly posting this because there was a paraglider. I didn't know anyone did that from this little mountain, there was a pretty good wind too. He landed in a park in the nearby area.

Workout. 5x up and down on the upper section. Then I went and a lovely bottle of Santa Rita Hills pinot noir, thus negating any gains. C'est la vie.

Hot day and I had the hill to myself for once. I tried just doing the upper section 3x, since it was in the shade. Overall I just felt blah - sore legs, sore shoulders, probably a little dehydrated.

I was inspired by a triplog by a member done on 3/20 :worthy: Thought today would be an appropriate day for a similar type trip , decided the destination was Brown Road Butte ,known locally as East Mesa’s Sky Island, makes it sound like a winner. Due to the length of this hike I left a cache of food and water near the summit the day before, that way I could take a break there or at my vehicle on each lap. Parking lot is spread out along Brown road so there was room for more vehicles when I arrived. It took me nine minutes for the first ascent , surprised to see no snow remains at the summit , I saved that route on route scout and then a cumulative route for the other 3 trips none of which I should post, if you get lost here give up hiking! The views are outstanding however , no not the view of Pass Mountain, but a tip to the single guys there’s a lovely bunch of ladies using this trail everyday! By the Second pass I was getting bored and started cleverly naming the larger boulders along the rutted road, names like Rocky 1, Rocky 2, etc. you get the drift. Didn’t help much as they were way too quiet for a Rock Band  I explored a flat area to the right of where the rutted road ,hereafter RR, turned left towards the summit it looked like another road might crest here from the east but I never saw it. After getting back to the parking area I went East to further explore to see if one of the apartment complexes had their own route up. They didn’t but I didn’t feel like walking around to the RR so I went straight up the south side of the butte , the steep loose rock slope was about as good as the RR. Up top noted the prior microwave tower pads would make good helipads in case I needed one! Walked down the the lower “viewing platform “ on the south end of the flattened top a couple of times . After a while some of the crowd looked like old hands at it , noticed some of the slackers would only go down to the first flat area before turning back, some slightly stronger ones turned around at the gate at the bottom while I would return all the way to the parking lot. I’m sure that should be the official turn around point if trying to beat the Guinness book of records for this endeavor, for a presumably sane person that is. I’m sure others could get more creative with this with other varying ascents, shirtless, barefoot, backwards,on a bike, juggling etc. Surprised how much mileage and AEG you can gain here, note if you made only 26 or is it 36 trips a bunch anyway, just let some math wizard figure it out for you , you could get Cactus to Clouds elevation! I’ll save that agenda for later next week!

3 times the fun. OK, I am now officially out of shape and overweight. Walking this hill was a bit of penance. As the homepage for this hike states, this is not Spook Hill, and I have updated OpenStreetMap to reflect that. We here call this Brown Road Butte, so that's what I added to OpenStreetMap, even though that is completely unofficial. If anything, I would rename this Spock Hill.

Stop on the way home after leaving Pass Mountain, deeply rutted road not very spooky, will post route for this complex hike. Worthwhile if you want a bit different view of the area, surprising no mansion has appeared on top.

Couldn't ride my bike because of the rain so I went for a quick neighborhood hike. Thing that made this day different was the fog. Made for some nice views. Also, when its raining there are less people on the trail. :)

This is becoming my 2nd go to, sort of close to home, quick hike. I do like this like mountain, I wish the City would purchase the land and make it a legit park.
I also posted in the past some pictures from this area from 20 years ago and I went ahead and got the capture from the VHS tape and did a comparison video from then vs now.
