West-side loop around the football stadium

15th Ave north - Arizona Canal NW - Skunk Creek/New River south - Grand Canal east from the 101 to 27th Ave - 27th Ave/Indian School back home.

Perfect day for a cruise. Sun went down along New River Trail. As expected, the only sketchy part was crossing I-17 on Indian School - the sidewalk is usually blocked so you gotta ride in traffic.

8:30pm start, west on Indian School to avoid the last section of canal after 19th Ave > south on the 17 Frontage to the canal > west on canal passed football stadium > north on bike path to 83rd Ave/Skunk Creek > SE on canal ‘til 15th Ave - only real sketchy part of the night was passing under I17 IMO, rolled the dice on about half of the other underpasses > 15th Ave south for a while

One day I’ll learn the names of the paths and canals. Decent weather we’re having.

Been sick all week but managed to drag myself out for a Meetup ride out of Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria this morning. Pretty much a reverse route from last week's Harem ride.

After work hike. Parked at 59th and Union Hills and continued north and east along the paved path. For the majority of Skunk Creek there is a paved path on either side of the wash, but for this initial stretch, from Union Hills and 62nd(ish) to about 57th(ish) Ave., there is only a paved path on the south side. Followed the paved path all the way to where it terminated at 51st and then swung over to the north side of the wash and followed it all the way to where the paved path ended (around 57th). Then dropped down into the wash and followed a frisbee golf course path for a duration before climbing the south bank and taking the path back to where I parked. Really not much of a trail (all paved), but it is nice to see it end to end. A few bikers and frisbee golfers but not much else. Did see a road runner again. I think every time I did this trail I saw a road runner. Got to like that! :)

Short after work hike along the Skunk Creek Wash. Started from Bell, (parked in a business parking lot and walked to the path). Walked along the west side up to Union Hills and then crossed to the other side and returned along the east bank. Both sides are paved, except for a short .5 stretch on the west side. Wildlife was decent for being in the middle of the city….4 good sized squirrels, a rabbit and a road runner.

After work “hike”. Parked on Bell and 75th and walked east to pick up the Skunk Creek Paved path. (Posted signs refer to this “trail” as the Skunk Creek Linear Park. By joining the Skunk Creek path at Bell Rd I had to follow it south and west to pick it up where it starts. Walked to the north bank to 75th and then walked south/east side on the way back. I had forgotten where this “trail” began and I was walking back I realized it was only going to be about a mile, so I kept walking the path up to to 69th Ave. Then walked the north/west side to close the loop and get back to car. Funny. The east side looks to be the official side. Composed of concrete. An occasional yellow dividing line. West side is composed asphalt up to 69th and then it looks like it becomes dirt. However, this side has info signs about the foliage along the canal/creek and occasional benches. Not much of a trail, but it was convenient. Weather was awesome. And the occasional peeks of the surrounding snow covered peaks a treat. Encountered a few users and surprising amount of “wildlife”….6 rabbits, 4 squirrels and a number of chatty birds. Still have quite a bit to do north and east, so one more visit is called for.

Just discovered this mild multi-use in my backyard - no joke, trail access is only about a mile from home. It's nice and rare to have off-street paved trails.

Went with a mate from work this morning and wrapped up before we started to cook in the heat. Began at 99th and Camelback, shot up 107th to catch the trailhead at the Glendale recharge ponds, then continued on through Skunk Creek in Peoria. Glad to have found my nearby fresh air.

Part 3, Completion of Trail and Overview. Walked from 69th Av, starting from behind the Home Depot on Bell Rd, to Union Hills Dr. That completes my "attack" on this flat urban trail, done in 3 segments on separate days. I was way off on this middle segment's distance. My estimate of 9/10 mi came in at 1.38 by GPS. I did trundle over to the N side via Union Hills bridge underpass to be sure I have the track to merge three segments into one. Uneventful walk on 8-foot wide concrete path. Points of interest: Skunk Creek Linear Park playground (Shade and Water, a sign says, but no toilets), interpretative signs and another silted-in concrete dam. Light traffic on a Sunday noon hour.

Overview. This 5.76 mi long path is really two separate trails with an odd transition zone along 73rd Av.

The lower SW segment, from 75th Av down to Rio Vista Park and the juncture with New River, is less urban and less busy. A slender channel of water runs through the streambed, carrying the overflow from the Arizona Canal and, in times of flood, torrents from Skunk Creek and elsewhere. The Peoria Sports Complex runs atop the embankment cross-creek on the N with orange groves and some farmland on the S.

The upper segment, on the NE up to the trail's start at 51st Av, is edged by middle-class houses, apartments and condos and seems to primarily serve nearby villagers out for evening strolls, family bike rides and light jogging.

Who would guess, without pre-walk mapping, that you could ever reach the upper segment from the lower? No signage tells you that. From 75th Av, roll the dice. Straight ahead to the Arizona Canal or do the underpass beneath the 75th Av bridge. Never did I see a sign saying "Skunk Creek Trail." Taking the underpass, you arrive with luck on the N side of the streambed, and there you find a sign, "Skunk Creek Linear Park" with a map how to get there, sidewalk-stepping up through tree-lined Cabrillo Point subdivision (the former Las Brisas, I assume) to a small traffic circle and straight north where you pick up the upper segment. Although coyotes and javelina reputedly venture up into Skunk Creek, I saw only desert cottontails and heard Gambel's quail. Flora? Much brittlebush and palo verde with a smattering of "exotics" like Fairy Duster and Santa Rita prickly pear.

By looking down into Skunk Creek's untamed streambed from 15-25 foot embankments, you can imagine what this area looked like before "civilization." Ultimately you do the Skunk for exercise. Or, in my case, rehabbing a sprained ankle. Serious hikers know this is not really hiking. No adventure, no risk. But not boring -- at least on the initial visit. It is not a walk, though, I would like to do again.

Part 2. Rio Vista Park to 67th Av, about 3 mi one way, then doubled back. Part 1, 51 Av to Union Hills Dr was 1.8. So with Skunk Crk Trail being 5.67 mi total, that should leave me about 9/10 of a mile for Part 3 and the completion of the entire trail. I'll try to finish it up Sunday before the Cardinals game in Carolina. As hikes go, this was pretty easy and lacklustre, but I'm rehabbing so it doesn't make much difference.

The boring part was coming along 73 Av through the tidy neighborhood called Las Brisas Point, the point being the peninsula between the junction of the Arizona Canal on the south and Skunk Crk on the north. But it's only a few blocks walk and then you're back out on the Skunk heading NE. The number of bikers increased at this point of the day, 4 o'clock or so.

Spring training for MLB teams begins next month, and players (minor leaguers, perhaps) were working out in the huge Peoria Sports Complex which runs about a mile along the N side of Skunk. I shot some photos of a ball shagger beyond the outfield fence, clambering down into the streambed on occasion to fetch baseballs hit there. In between shagging, the kid did calisthenics or sat in a metal chair. Pretty Bush League if you ask me.

Rio Vista is a nice park with a kids baseball complex. There's even a pickleball court out there somewhere, I was told. The park lays just below where Skunk Crk joins New River on the way to the Agua Fria. Beautiful day for a hike. Didn't regret this one at all.

A rugged afternoon in the urban woods of Skunk Creek Linear Park. Flat path, concrete walkways, ramadas, toilets, benches, lights, interpretative signs, plenty of company. Mr. Urban Hiker, I am. For the present. Ankle sprain still nags. This hike is a perfect example of my trail ethos: Never meet a hike you don't like (well, outside the Desert Classic), and never meet a timetable you can't destroy. The original intent was to hike Skunk all the way to its conclusion, 51 Av to Rio Vista Park, and back. No sweat. Be back long before sunset. But there again, I stopped to take photos (blooms and a skateboard park) and have a sandwich. And then there was the 30-minute chat with an elderly Englishman while his beautiful 8-year-old Bearded Collie patiently listened in. Adding to the foreign flavor, a young Romanian man came by with his dog and excitedly talked soccer with the Englishman. English, I've long known, isn't the international language. It's soccer. And of course I didn't come close to arriving at Rio Vista Park. I turned around at busy Union Hills Dr near 63 Ave. The creek itself was dry, most of the drainage in the area being sealed off with small over-flow dams, creating attractive ponds for the villagers. Next trip on Skunk, I'll start at Rio Vista Park and travel back to Union Hills.

Started from the Peoria complex and took the paved path east. Rereading the trail description I realized I missed the turn for Skunk Creek and continued down the canal. Hit 67th Ave. (3 miles) and turned around. Since the cement really pounds my knees I tried to jog on the adjacent crushed gravel as much as possible. Saw several trail markers indicating East New River Trail. I got the impression if I had gone west from the complex there would have been about 5 miles of trail in that direction. As stated in the write up, this is not much for hiking but an easy way to get some miles in for biking or jogging....if you can handle the pavement. Pretty warm out today. Not many people out there except for a few bikers.

Don't know why but I hoped for more pizzaz at the end of this, the longest canal in the Valley. Walked out from 67th Ave to the terminus where the Skunk Creek channel comes in from the NE and meets up with the canal about .2 mi W of 75th Ave near Bell Rd. That's east of the Peoria Sports Complex. The canal proper actually ends at a large mossy sluice E of 75th Ave, drops down into the shrubby greenbelt to the N and follows a narrow canal westward toward Skunk. There's water in it but not much. At the sluice a smaller canal is directed due W but I did not follow it out. Think it ends or goes underground at 75th. Not much to see until Skunk Creek where traffic picked up with bikers, some high school runners and a few strollers like me. Talked briefly with a biker from Lansing, MI, finishing up an 18-miler. Didn't think to say, "Go Spartans." Before that, 67th to the sluice, the canal bank was all mine except for 6-7 anglers in three groups. One said he caught a striper near bridge at 67th. Very few waterfowl. Four mallards and three coots. Although temps in the 90s, it was pleasant with a slight breeze. Just not a very interesting canal segment.
