Note: we did not reach the true high point, turning around on the upper ridge, but I’m still linking to the guide since we did most of the route.

Second hike of the day. Since we had the jeep, we were able to drive almost to the end of the road. Could have gone a few hundred more feet, but we parked at a flat place to turn around. Definitely high clearance 4wd required to drive the last couple of miles. I’m really not sure I would want to do this hike if I had to park farther back and walk the road.

We walked up the road which turned into a faint trail. Steep. Rocky. Slippery.

Once over the first saddle, we had to sidehill for a short distance. After that, the tracks we had downloaded generally went to the left of the rock formation in front of us. Instead of doing that, we went up and through it. It was doable, but going left would have been easier.

From there, we followed the ridge up, generally staying below and to the right of the ridgeline. Lots of sidehilling. Steep. Loose. Slippery. Up and up. Sidehilling, grabbing anything we could. Hands and legs full of thorns, needles, etc.

Finally made it up to the upper ridgeline. Up top was more bouldery, which was better. We got to what we hoped was the high point, but determined the actual high point was still almost a quarter-mile away. Looked at our current rate of speed, time of day, work involved, etc, and opted to not continue to the high point. We probably could have made it with enough daylight left, but we weren’t certain of that. I’m not particularly fast on rough offtrail, so I told Bruce since he’s a lot faster, he could go solo to the high point, but he declined.

The descent was not as terrible as we’d feared. We stayed more on the ridgeline, which had more boulders, but was “easier” than the loose sidehilling. It wasn’t necessarily much faster, but was less strenuous. Again, saw a section of lots of alcoves on the way down. Pretty thunderheads to the northeast, which actually gave us some rain while we were driving out later.

Tough hike. If I were to do this one again, I’d want to start early morning to get some shade, and would follow our descent route, which was much better than our ascent. Again, grippy shoes are a necessity. Long pants too. Great day of some desert hikes in some lesser visited areas.

This was hike #2 of the day. On the way back, we stopped to climb to the highpoint of the Belmont Mountains. Or so we thought.

For the drive, at the intersection of Aguila and Vulture Mine Road, head south. After the Belmont Pit, the road starts to degrade. To where we parked, you definitely need a capable 4x4 with high clearance. There are other options before this, but it would turn into an obnoxious road walk. I'm not sure I'd drive my Subaru close enough to make me want to do this hike.

We parked just down the hill from where the @Flying_Fliver parked and started our ascent. It's only 3 miles, how hard could it be?

The first part was fun. There were a couple of scrambles around and up the Big Horn condominiums. Linda's RS was reading off 30-minute half-miles, so the going was slow. This is rugged territory. We roughly followed a Fliver route until we didn't. The side hill bypasses around the 4 or so "Bumps" on the way up were slippery.

We made it up to the top of the ridgeline, 0.22 miles from the highpoint with another 100 feet to gain (plus the many ups and downs). Looking at the time, we admitted defeat, decided to call it a day, and retreat.

Going down, we chose a much nicer route, following the bumps on the ridgeline instead of skirting them.

Averaging less than a mile an hour, this was one of the slower hikes in a while.

It was still a fun climb!

I decided to go hike a couple of Arizona mountain range highpoints:
1) Peak 3565, ostensibly the highpoint of the Hieroglyphic Mountains
2) Belmont BM 3137, the highpoint of the Belmont Mountains

Peak 3565
This one is off of Castle Hot Springs Road. I intended to hike up a road that would take me north of the peak; instead I wound up taking a road that took me south of the peak. Once I got below the peak, I had to go off-trail up to a ridgeline; from there I took a trail to the summit block and made my way up to the summit. There were a couple of short, awkward class 3 moves to make.

On the way back I took trails down to the road on the north side. My descent route was better -- it was shorter than the ascent route, and there was no off-trail.

I did not see any flivers at the summit, but did see some height of light wires.

This was a fun little peak to climb, with some nice views at the summit.

Belmont 3137
I drove in on Vulture Mine Road and decided to pull over and park about 1/2 mile before the mining road I intended to take off of Vulture Mine.

This one was tougher and slower than I thought it would be. Once I got off of Vulture Mine Road, there was almost no flat, even ground on the entire hike. Actually, it was more a scramble than a hike. The terrain was rough on a lot of loose rock, and there was enough vegetation to keep you on your toes.

Route finding was a challenge on this one. There is no trail and no cairns, and the route didn't seem very intuitive to me.

I located the benchmarks and both reference marks on top. I found the summit register log, but could not get the jar lid off. I doubt if many people come and hike this one.

Synopsis
Peak 3565 was the most enjoyable of these two hikes.

Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes is below. Stats above are the sum of the 2.

Peak 3565: 4.52 miles with 856 feet of elevation gain
Belmont: 5.16 miles with 1,612 feet of elevation gain

The Belmont Mountain Range is north of Tonopah, and south of Wickenburg.
The high point of the range is designated as Peak 3137, and that's where surveyors set the Belmont benchmark in 1948.
This whole range (and high point) should not to be confused with a small stand-alone 'Belmont Mountain', which is just west of the range.

The Belmont Azimuth Mark is in the flat desert, just N of the meandering Beer Bottle Wash, and northwest of Belmont BM. The Azimuth Mark was an easy find. From there, I continued driving Vulture Mine Rd, to my chosen trailhead to get up Peak 3137.

My TH was at a defunct mine, which is on a weak road off Vulture Mine Rd. Weak, meaning high clearance and 4WD. In fact, the Vulture Mine Rd in that area also qualifies for at least a high clearance transport. I accessed a southwest ridge from the defunct mine.

My research showed that many hikers, using this southwest ridge, have a 6 to 8 mile hike distance, due to them not being able to get their vehicle to the actual mine. That extra distance is all 'road hiking'. I was lucky - No road hiking.

This chosen ridge has about nine or ten rock filled boulder bumps, large and medium size. You can traverse to the side, around some of them, and others you can't. Some bumps you must go up, over the top, and then down the other side.

Through my expert skill and cunning, (OH, and knowledge from another hiker's info), I was able to eliminate two of the largest bumps altogether, by descending off the ridge to a wash, then up, through a small saddle, then up to the ridgeline again. After that maneuver, I still had one high bump to go, before the final climb up to the high point and benchmark.

To look at this whole ridge system up close was, at first, intimidating. (jagged, non uniform ridge obstacles, and possible exposure).
However, when you take each part separately, it's very manageable. This ridge is mostly stable rocks and boulders, with minimal scree.
I just took my time, and side-stepped rock bumps when I could. Going up, side-stepping to the right, (mostly) will prevent any exposure.

You can't miss the benchmark disk, as it's right at the high point of Peak 3137. You can't miss the reference mark #1 disk either, as it's only 12 feet away.
However, you'll have to do a search for RM #2. It's over 63 feet away from the BM disk, through a load of boulders. Take a nice walk and you'll locate it.

All in all, a very fine hike - Just a bit tedious at times, with all those 'rock pile' bumps to navigate.

Turned out to be a great day, despite the foreboding forecast. Eric and I parked a couple miles north of Belmont, made our way across the desert, and spied a ridge leading from the desert floor on the north side straight to the summit. It was most certainly steep, but not as bad as it looked from afar. Route-finding was easy, but involved some cliff-dodging (and, occasionally, climbing :) ) Atop the Belmonts, we signed in and enjoyed the view, wanting to extend the day.

We descended via the airy and rugged northwest ridge, which took much longer to descend than our route took to climb, and this deposited us near Beer Bottle Well (great name!) just off the main dirt road. We could have just walked the road back to the CR-V, or....We looked at the time and saw we still had plenty, and went after Peak 2340. She turned out to be a surprise - who knew such a small mountain could pack such a wallop? Jalapeno, at least, on the spice scale. As one of the two people to have signed the summit register said (last signed in 2004), "It was a sporty climb!" Indeed. Recommended if you're in the area!

We dropped off the northeast side of Peak 2340 as a thunderstorm made its way across the valley to the north, but never threatened us.

Started from the east side of the Belmont Mountains, off of Aguila Road around noon. I had my Civic so I only drove a short distance off road. Walked an old road leading up to a high, open mine. I say open mine because I could see the tailing piles and where they blasted away at a wall but no shafts, adits or pits. There's a bunch of copper ore spread around. From there I headed for the ridgeline and followed it, more or less, all the way to the high point. This range is pretty rugged and was more difficult than expected. Quite a few exposed sections on the ridges made me consider turning around. Glad I didn't.

Having set out to get to the top of this peak a month ago and not getting it done left a bad taste in my mouth so it was time to check it off the list. The drive in on the Wickenburg Hassayampa road is pretty gentle and puts you pretty close to the main ridge heading on up to the top. I was able to pull off at an old campsite which meant one thing was certain, it wouldn't be long before I spot a beer can. Having to break in some new shoes I thought this would be the perfect spot to do so, a nice short scramble in my beloved desert.
As I got started I knew this was going to happen, I took about ten steps and the first beer can sighting indeed happened, can you guess what brand it was? I skirted the desert floor to the NW ridge so I could make some what of a loop out of the day coming back down the main ridge that leads right back to the road and where I parked for the morning. Again I found all the loose rocks this mountain has to offer, this range is just crumbly for some reason and I really do not like it. But at least I was as consistent today as when I was on the southern side a month ago thinking I was loosing my hiking swagger.
Once on the ridgeline up top it was drooling time for me as I saw what was ahead, a nice rocky scramble and boulder hop to the top. Some spots offer some good exposure while others offer the loose rock you wish would disappear. The last push to the top was virtually a rocky staircase that lead you right to the summit where on a clear day would offer some fantastic views of the surrounding area. Up top today you could hardly see the White Tanks and the Estrellas were nowhere in sight. But it was nice to be up top and enjoying a brew before 8am for me today, is there something wrong with that? :) It was nice to spend over an hour on top and just soak in the area and summit brew.
The traverse back down went slightly slower as I wanted to avoid any face plants a loose rock would have provided. Got back to the Jeep, picked up the unwanted beer can and enjoyed the drive out. Such a nice area to get out to, cannot wait to come back.

First trip trying to get to the summit of Belmonts. We made it to the final ridge but then turned back due to time.
