These were 2 Christmas Day hikes to 2 AZ range highpoints, both of which are also P1K peaks:
1) South Mountain
2) Sacaton Peak

The front door was locked but the back door was ajar.

Sacaton Peak
The gate to the park was closed so I had to walk about 1/2 mile on a road each way. From there, it was a bit of open desert to a drainage, which I took most of the way up. I came back basically the same way.

Synopsis

SoMo: 0.92 miles with 175 feet of AEG
Sacaton: 4.03 miles with 1,148 feet of AEG

Hit up Sacaton Peak on the way home, good stuff. I parked at the Casa Grande North Mountain Park, crossed under the small barbed wire fence, and started my way up the drainage. Going was pretty decent, I had downloaded the track for this one but did not really need it, the way up is pretty obvious and it is just a matter of finding the path of least resistance. Managed to pick up a cholla bomb in the calf right before I met up with the tower road at the top. Made the short trip over to the summit and towers, and all the security cameras...so I am guessing this peak is on reservation land? The gnats were out in full force today, as bad as I have ever seen in the Tortolitas or McDowells even. I opted to scratch the ridgeline and just went back down the drainage, although I took a different line than the way up. There were a few eagles circling and screeching pretty much the whole time I was hiking, that was certainly at least interesting. I did manage to find a small rattler on my way back down, but he was not too interested in getting riled up. made it back to the van and headed back to town, but my hiking urge was not quite sated after this short off-trail scramble. I stopped by Lookout mountain on my way home for a little extra effort, did most of the circumference, the main summit, and a few other prominent high points complete with numerous social trails. All in all a good day! Thanks again to Chumley for your track and info on this one!

North Mountain Park is really a little gem in Casa Grande. While there, I looked up at Sacaton Peak and decided it would be a fun summit.

I made a quick map plan and thought the ridge would be a good ascent. As I approached, the drainage looked better, and turned out to be perfect. Not overgrown, and a few short scrambles, but otherwise the ideal route.

Nearing the top, two vehicles drove by on the road. I continued my ascent to the peak and then cut back down to the lower area with all the towers and had a brief chat with the utility workers who were doing some maintenance. For the descent, I headed down the road a bit and then traversed a super fun ridge line to the west. This was the highlight of the mountain until the very last section where it dropped quite steeply on a slope replete with cholla. Despite my best efforts, I ended up with a cuddly teddy bear hugging my leg. ](*,)

A few minutes later I was on my way again, back to the truck with no further prickly incidents.

Normally you should get some outstanding views from up here, but yesterday's crazy wind (which didn't really die down much today) made visibility basically nil. I could barely see San Tan Mountain from the summit, 11 miles away. Newman, 25 miles away was fully obscured by dust in the air.

This one has been on the radar for a while. It's just such a prominent little bump in the desert that you see so clearly as you pass on I-10. High point in the Sacaton Mountains: check!

We took the jeep trail to the top. I don't think you can legally do this now. There were no signs in 1995 at least I don't remember any!

After trying the route on Santan we came down to Sacaton to reconnoiter this one. Back in 1992, we actually drove part way up to the summit and started to hike but ended up giving up as it was almost dark.
On the way back we saw lots of Grateful Dead fans and Compton Terrace getting ready for them later!
