Knowing full well that there would be hundreds of people on Quandary Peak on a holiday weekend, I decided it would still be about the right amount of activity for the day, and they have a $7 shuttle from Breckenridge to avoid parking nightmares ($55 to park at the TH if you can get a permit). Shuttle to the TH wasn't too bad, only had to wait about 10 minutes.

Lower part of the trail is steep but manageable. After about a mile, the elevation gain wasn't adding up, felt like with just ~3 miles of trail, there wasn't enough gain in the first mile to get us to 14.2k in time. After the treeline, there's a steeper stretch that switchbacks up to gain the ridge. Then, a couple hundred feet of a reprieve, but at this point there was still about 1k of climbing to go in what looked like half a mile.

That last half mile was where I started to feel the ascent, and also where I started to run into hordes of people. It looked like Camelback. Eventually got to the summit, where there were probably at least 50 people hanging out.

I figured I had caught up to the bulk of the morning's hikers, and that if I hurried down I can beat them all to the shuttle. Because of all of the hikers coming up, the descent may have technically been Class 2.

Had to wait about 25 minutes for the shuttle back to town, but overall I'd go that route again (although I'm not sure how long you'd have to wait if you don't beat the masses back down). Only got passed on the trail by one person; I guess an entry-level 14er can be a great reminder that no matter how slow I feel sometimes, I'm still in better shape than most of the general population. As it turns out, Quandary Peak is my 11th CO 14er, and it's also the 11th highest CO 14er.

Got to the trailhead around 0610, but didn’t start hiking until almost 0630. It was just light enough to not need a headlamp. I mentally broke the hike down into three parts, each with roughly the same elevation gain. The first 1100’ of gain was the least steep, but still steep. The trail steadily climbed through the trees. Lots of tree roots and log steps. I shed a layer within the first half mile, only needing two thin wool shirts.

The next 1100’ of gain was tougher. I was mostly above the timber line. Lots of rock steps, which I did not like very much. Easy to follow trail. Rocky. Steep. Nice views. This was the breeziest section of the day. I added gloves, but it still wasn’t all that cold. Lots of pikas.

The final 1200’ of gain (above 13000’) was hiked at a snails pace. Less wind. More talus. Even steeper. The trail got vague in a few short spots, but common sense kept you on the ridge. Less breeze. Still the annoying rock steps. The sections without the steps were nice. All class 1, just steep. The final 100’ to the summit leveled off a bit. Great views. Tiny bits of snow scattered around.

Took a short break at the summit, then headed back down. I wasn’t loving the shoes I was wearing during the descent. They were great uphill, but not as comfortable downhill. Great traction though. The rockiness of the descent got tiring after a while. Warmed up a lot, shed the gloves and one shirt. Almost no breeze. Saw three mountain goats alongside the trail. Noticed one discarded daypack. Still lots of pikas, but no marmots. Some patches of nice fall color.

Day 4 of 5. Favorite hike of the trip. Quandary Peak was delightful. The path to the peak is incredibly scenic, not as steep as Elbert, and wasn't as crowded. Being above the clouds is always nice, and on the way down we saw 9 mountain goats. The goats were very docile and slowly worked their way up the trail. We stood still and let the goats pass by. They didn't seem shy or bothered.

Tracie, my intrepid hiking partner, and I decided to make Quandary Peak our 3rd 14er of the week. We got to the TH right at sunrise, and the parking area near the TH was full, so we parked at a lower parking area, which was about half full.

We had a bright sunny day to hike, which was delightful.

This is a cool hike, and due to the elevation gain it was a bit more difficult than Bierstadt and Sherman, which were the 14ers that we hiked on the previous 2 days.

There was great scenery along the way, and at the summit.

The parking area was just off of a paved road, and is about 8-9 miles south of Breckenridge.

Wow what a nice first 14er in Colorado! This was really a peak of convienence, as I am currently hiking the Colorado Trail and had decided to take a "zero" day in Breckenridge after covering the first 105 miles of the trail from Denver in five days. I had made contact with Joel (MtnBart01) when I arrived in Denver and had given him a flexible set of dates and by luck this morning was good for him.

After backpacking 105 miles into Breckenridge, I felt pretty liberated throwing on the slack pack for a 6.5 mile round trip hike. The views were absolutely tremendous in every direction and the overall experience really had my adrenaline pumping. I rode that adrenaline to the summit and ended up making pretty good time. I was even lucky enough to get a little photo shoot with a pair of mountain goats on the way up. Just a great hike overall and I am very grateful to Joel for making the early morning trip up to Breck to pick me up and drop me off at my hostel. I am officially in love with 14ers and I think I can relate to the enthusiasm BobP shared in the description he wrote for this hike after he had made this his first 14er in Colorado.

Back on the CT tomorrow. I am sure the zeal of the peak will wear off quickly, as I carry my freshly supplied pack up to the 12,800 pass guarding Breck to the southwest. Up next, Elbert.

Nice hike views were great! Still like it with snow better even if it was less work with piles of rocks. Great to finally meet you Lee thanks for company. Nice to meet DallinW as well after the hike. They don't make hostels like they used to. :)

What can I say perfect day for skinning and riding this mountain. Pikes Peak was even clearly visible. Snow is still in abundance in May and I've gotten fresh tracks two days in a row two thumbs up. Got a late start so the sun would soften the snow. I could feel my legs all the way up from the previous two days of activities. There were more people on the mountain than I would have liked. I passed a group so after having the summit to myself for about 15 min. It became a party including a husky trying to steal my food out of my hand. The bowl had adequate coverage so I finally got to ride it and below the ridgeline was perfect corn. There were skiers hikers and people on snowshoes. The trail is snow covered from the parking lot. I basically went straight up on the board as skis with the skins and I rode it as a board down which is probably why the distance and AEG is less. It also provided more solitude.
Nevertheless, the views are so amazing from the top with snow I'm not sure why someone would do this hike during the late summer on a rocky desolate trail.

14er number 2, woohoo! :y:

This one was considerably easier than Mt Elbert, my first 14er, but it was still a formidable challenge. The grades reminded me a lot of Humphrey's Summit Trail, very gradual (nearly flat) at the bottom, building up to steeper grades towards the peak.

Very cold and windy at the summit. There was frost on everything above treeline, and the aspens in the area are beginning to turn yellow. Fall is right around the corner in the high country.

Coming from the Phoenix area instead of straight off the CT, altitude played a much bigger role on this one. A little bit of nausea on the way up, and a killer headed ache after we got down.

Looking forward to the next one!

This was my first 14er and also my first 14er of this trip. I did this one in 2007/8 but never recorded it on haz  but did post pics . [ photoset ] without descriptions. I hiked with a legend that day. Horton the Quandry Dog was an awesome dog and credited with saving quite a few lost hikers. Google him for more info. RIP Horton. It was awesome hiking with Horton but having someone to talk to was more fun. Frick an I had some interesting convos mostly cool historical dr stuff. By the end, my hiphopatslsmus and amygaglia were very perky.

Talks of relationships between body size and brain size and brain size and cosmos cogs... Cows have bigger brains than most monkeys, but except for the eat more chikin ones most are as dumb as BrunoP.

Behavioral complexity and absolute magnitude, cuticle folding, and neocortex dominated our hike to the boulder field. Gears sifted to gray matter vs. volume of nerve cells and the architecture of brain structures as it relates to modern day Rap music. Questions like: what is intelligence anyway? Is it the dude who shoots the guy playing with fancy swords? or Is it knowing the correct way to peel a banana?.

Neocortex was the subject upon arriving at the ridgeline. Neocortex is related to size of the brain. Basically, size does matter. I tried to trick the Frick but then realized he is taller than me

Neurons were next as we approached the summit and then talks morphed to gaillial cells, intercellularphone space, vascular components, and other alien stuff. I was floored when Frick said " the activity of a neuron may be proportional to the length of its dendritic tree, and thus activity per unit volume of brain is blah...blah to a species' brain size. What does that even mean :-k My only response was the volume of nerve cells is irrelevant in a discussion of intelligence.

I then told him about this trip hikearizona.com/cal ... ___1 to try and really frick him out.

Epic beer was consumed :y:

Side note: You'll know why I started hiking 14ers if you read my MOTHC triplog.
The moral of the story is: Life is an unknown especially with smelly 5 day old hiking pants.

first 14er of the trip and one i was looking forward to. bob and i got to chatting about all kinds of stuff and we were more than halfway up before i realized it, with only the long final ridge ascent to go - which kicked my pumpkin.

wonderful views all along and especially from the top. the Decalibron looms near. it was pumpkin cold up top but we hiked down in short sleeves and it was gorgeous.

awesome encounter with mountain goat momma and her baby.

this would be a great first 14er to do. loved it

Two for Tuesday! Decided to do Quandary and get some turns in the afternoon. Lots of snow. I think the extra work of wading through snow was worth the views at the top, but following any kind of track in the treeline was impossible. Route finding and backtracking in the treeline both going up and down to get out of the postholing accounted for the extra AEG and distance. Postholing in the treeline and pretty slick and slushy up top. Needless to say I only got or wanted 2 hours of skiing after this hike. T-storms waited until I was done skiing and the weather was perfect. The winter hiking set up worked great except a velco strap broke on my right shoe on the way up to hold the liner in place so I rubbed a quater size wound into my shin. Feet were warm and no worse for wear. Oh and I spent quite a bit of time with a curious Mountain Goat who appeared from no where. Great Day!

We setup a vacay at Breckenridge with our timeshare several months ago. The first thing that came to my mind was doing a 14'er; however, I have just been way too busy to research anything. I was bummed that I had nothing planned, but was wise enough to bring along my daypack and boots...just in case.

From Flagstaff, we went north through Moab (did Delicate Arch) and then onto I70, through Grand Junction then south of Frisco to Breck. (Was my first time in Colorado and it was simply spectacular. I can't wait to return.)

Once we got into our timeshare (Hilton Valdoro) I finally ahd time to Google the nearby area and was happy to find that Quandary Peak was only 6 miles from Breckenridge and very "accessible". (we had a Sentra as rental, so road accessibility was, ahem, less of an issue - hehe :D ) There was snow covering most of the lower-elevation, numbered peaks around Breckenridge Ski and this made me believe Quandary would be totally covered..I was not overly optimistic about climbing a 14'er w/o the proper gear.

After asking around, most locals said it wouldn't be a problem and there should be much less snow there...to find out for sure, we took a short drive out to the trail-head. It was quite obvious, but very odd...Quandary did have much less snow than the surrounding peaks. I suddenly became even more stoked about this opportunity.

I was very ill-prepared for any cold hiking so back in Breck, I purchased baselayer tops/bottoms, a clava, and some lightweight gloves. Turns out I needed every bit of it.

Wifey slept in the next morning, I left our hotel around 5am for a super early start. Got to the trailhead around 5:30 and which was still pretty dark (and only 33 degrees). I waited a few more minutes for dawn, then took off on the well-used, grooved trail. I brought a full 100oz Camelback and a liter of Powerade along. It was a fairly heavy pack since it included more layers of clothes as well, just in case.

Several hundred, rocky feet above treeline, I arrived to the "flatter" middle section of Quandary. The wind started to really pick up and it was BITTER COLD. I dropped my pack and added my shell, gloves and clava and I felt MUCH better with this new gear (especially the clava). Soon after, I noticed dark clouds were brewing near the very top. (I heard no thunder so I marched onward.)

During the final mile, I start to get very anxious about finishing. My mind was convincing me the weather was too bad and to turn around while I could. I pressed on, several minutes later, I was on the roof the peak; the last hundred yards being pretty flat. I had just arrived at my first Colorado 14'er summit, but it the peak was covered in clouds :? . I had very poor visibility in just about every direction. I was really looking forward to seeing miles and miles of endless mountain peaks, but that would have to wait for another day, another climb. I was however, overjoyed with my accomplishment and my decision to fight through wind and weather - I gave myself a huge mental pat-on-the-back. As I went for a drink, I discovered my Camelback had frozen (LOL)...I had no water for the descent which fortunately was VERY easy.

Living in Flagstaff (7k) has it's peak-bagging benefits. I don't remember suffering any altitude problems when I did Whitney, and I didn't have any issues with Quandary - at least while on the mountain. I arrived back to the hotel around 11am, very glad I still had the afternoon to site-see with my wife. When I looked at my Camelback, I noticed I had hardly drank ANY water...maybe 6-8 ounces all through the hike. Needless to say, an hour later, I suffered terribly with a SCREAMING headache which lasted all the way through dinner...:(

Overall this was a great experience...I'm REALLY looking forward to getting up some more 14'ers come next summer/fall...as well as just seeing beautiful Colorado.

Quandary was the last of this year's September Colorado hikes. It capped an annual gathering of a large group from another forum, quite a few of whom joined me (and woke me up very, very early :tt: ) for an "easy" 14er. Its accessibility and relative ease and safety make this an extremely popular trail, and the good weather brought out amazing crowds. The ascent recalled descriptions I've heard of Mt. Fuji, where I'm told hikers form an almost continuous line.

Despite the lack of solitude, it was fun to be with some people enjoying a big mountain for the first time and the views were fantastic. I also saw my first mountain goat in the wild, and at very close range.

My rant for this trip has to do with a few very young children who were part of a large group that eventually broke up and spread way out. They were mostly going along with us and an older guy seemed to be watching them. A girl about eight years old already had blisters less than halfway up, but the guy didn't seem to care and was really pushing her. We saw him and some others on the summit, but not her. He said she was part of his group, but not his responsibility. While he was still up there, we found her and two younger children alone about 500 feet below the summit, without water, food, extra clothes, suffering from not only blisters, thirst, and cold, but also vomiting from altitude. We stopped to take care of them, and about 20 minutes later, the rest of their group caught up from below (including their parents). A few of the parents from our group gave them some firm advice, telling them about 15 times that they had to get her down right away. They were so beat themselves that they were unable to move right away.

We continued on, hoping they would finally comply, which I think they did about half an hour later. I'd still like to have another word with the older guy from that group, who seemed to be running the show. His whole party was short on water and food.

That encounter saddened me, although I was very impressed by the childrens' toughness and good spirits despite the severity of their plight. They would have tried to summit if we hadn't stopped them, no matter how bad they felt.

The night finished with a big meal in camp, stories around the fire, and sad farewells.
