Had the opportunity to hike this while staying at Castle Hot Springs. What a beautiful hike, there is a historic flag at the top. The views of Lake Pleasant are beautiful. Only sad thing is this hike is only open to guests staying, so will have to stay here again to hike some of the other trails. But a really well put together trail!

Getting up Salvation Peak from Castle Hot Springs Resort is quite easy, but since the entire hike is on resort property, I'm not sure if there's anywhere to park and access this trail without being a resort guest. I was wanting an early morning hike since breakfast isn't served until 7:30, and this looked like a nice way to get a couple of miles in and maybe catch a good sunrise. The trail starts in the employee parking lot and quickly heads uphill to the east. After a short distance, it flattens out as it heads south while overlooking the resort and road. Just walking to this mesa of sorts offers a nice view for anyone not really wanting to hike.

The trail then turned west-southwest and switchbacked uphill. Kind of steep, but the trail is in very good shape. As the trail turned to the north, it got a little steeper. Once at the saddle, the trail became rockier and almost a light scramble the last little bit to the top. Just below the flagpole, there is a steel cable and pipe ladder bolted into the rocks. After a quick climb up the ladder of maybe 8' or so, you're at the summit, which only has room for a couple of people. Views in all directions are great. After taking a bunch of pictures, I headed back down the ladder, then retraced my steps back downhill. Great little workout hike, and I wish I had taken the time to hike it yesterday morning too.

I saught "Salvation", and it was not what I was expecting, but.....it didn't disappoint. I had tried to do this hike earlier this year, but had forgotten my Garmin ](*,) and couldn't ascertain which peak was Salvation from the vantage of Governor's Peak. This time I brought my Garmin with the downloaded route. :) Got on the trail right around 7am. It amazes me how it is still dark at that time! I didn't bring my headlamp, but it was still a little dim for first 15-20 minutes. Made good time on my way towards Governor's Peak. The trail was in decent shape, but a little overgrown in spots, becoming more so as I entered the Four Tanks area. There are quite a few cairns on the way up to (what I think of as) the first saddle out of Four Tanks. I have a feeling that I was crossing threads (trails) on my way up to this saddle. My route up didn't quite seem like previous hikes. This time I seemed to Hike the dry wash more. Whereas in previous hikes I stayed more on the banks first the northern bank then crossing over to the south side. Reaching the saddle provides the first good views of Castle Hot Springs. The place is looking good. The grass there looks greener than my back yard. Counted about 28 bungalows. Nightstalker (whom I met later on) says the place is open for business for a modest fee of $1500 a night, with a two night minimum :o :o . No wonder the grass looks so green. It's being "seeded" with hundred dollar bills  . From the first saddle made it up to the second saddle, though to me it is more of a shelf. Had a little trouble staying on trail on this section. I knew where I wanted to go, so it was no problem. But the trail didn't seem nearly as clear cut as it had been on previous visits.

Upon reaching the second saddle/shelf I checked my Garmin, just to confirm that I was still on the correct route. Now, on my previous visit, I had picked out a couple of peaks that seemed likely candidates on being Salvation. With that imagery in mind, I had no desire to climb Governors then do all that descending to hit Salvation. So I thought I would be smart (that is usually a recipe for disaster) and swing west around Governor's Peak. This really didn't turn out that bad. The vegetation is sparse enough that I was able to pick my way fairly easily. Plus, I came across a couple of game trails that made for even easier travel. The one thing that made this "rough" was that Salvation was not where I had envisioned it. Salvation was further to the north than I thought, so I ended up circling over half of Governor's Peak to bring it into view. Salvation isn't so much a peak as a terminus/high point on a descending ridgeline. I was lucky this morning as it was windy and the flag was displayed nicely, so I was able to identify met destination. Reached the flag with a minimum amount of down climbing. There is quite a bit of exposure on the west side of Salvation, but the approach from the east/south is very doable. I thought the flag on Tramonto Peak was secure. Well the flag (and ladder) on Salvation aren't going anywhere! The pole has been cemented and bolted into place. It's a good size flag, so these extra steps I'm sure are necessary. From here, I decided to visit Governor's Peak on my way back. As I neared the peak I saw Nightstalker's group summit. Chatted briefly with him. It's always great encountering another HAZ hiker.

The return trip was uneventful. Though I did notice marker just to the south of the trail, while in the Four Tanks area. I'm guessing this is a mining claim marker. Didn't see any wildlife until I got back to the road when I came upon tarantula :) This is only the second one that I've seen on a hike! Weather was perfect. Overcast for most of the morning. Nice meeting another member of the HAZ community.

We met Barrett at a secret rendevous but before he pulled in we were greeted by several men with guns. They asked Denny and I where we were going and if we wanted them to come look for us if my car was there for more than a day. Our ride showed up late(2 minutes) per usual. Then we headed on the highway to hell(see pic 1). The boys up front were nice and comfy and they mocked me every chance they got. The plan was to hike a peak or two and we accomplished our goal.

Before the hike our guide took us all over showing the various landmarks and places where not to start the hike. At 630am, we were at the trailhead that we had previously passed by. The trail welcomes you with a sign in and a sign welcoming you to hell. Denny was todays' sign model and did a bang uo job. You start on a trail for a while and then head off trail towards the summit. The climb was hot and humid but there wasn't too much whining. We decided to have a snack in the shade just off the summit and chilled for a while. Next it was on to Lt. Governors peak which is close by and a little lower.

Finding a route to Salvation took some time and we cliffed out and had to backtrack a few times. We finally broke thru a rock layer and it was smooth travels from there on out. I was expecting to see an Army on Salvation but it was empty. Its a pretty cool peak with a flagpole. I think the flag was from the Coan era. Barrett and I climed the rocks and we discovered a laddder route which we coaxed Denny to take. The views all day were pretty
sweet. The route off Salvation was scary steep and I don't think I'd go that way again. I had one mishap that involved two huge boulders; one of which hit my calf as my life was flashing neon green. As we were hiking back to the truck, Barrett points out a coyote that was really a bobcat :y: . Bobcats are super cool and this one was no exception. We also passed some guys unloading ammo at a poor innocent paper target.

All-in-all, it was a fun day with good company and good snacks.

Bob said I could go hiking with him and Barrett so I was in, not knowing where or what.I thought I was in trouble when we meet where many police cars were :o :? :scared: .Barrett drove and he does things a little different. He drives over to show you where you will start and finish before you start the hike ;) .
we signed in and started the hike which was easy to follow most of the way up.With the humidity it was quite the workout getting to our first summit.I signed us in and joined the boys in a nice shaddy spot Barrett picked out for a break. This break in the shade with a cold Gatorade did the trick and we were off to our next summit.Once there,Bob and Barrett were not sure about the ladder so they let the fat guy go first :? .It all worked out as I got to miss the pole dance :o .The views were great. The route down was steep and thick and it took me longer than going up.From there it was smooth sailing back to the truck.Barrett even showed us a Bobcat(very cool).A little warm but a nice hike in an area I have not spent much time in.Nice to meet another Hazer and hike with him and Bob.Thanks for driving Barrett and Bob and thanks for the cold beverage! :D
