On our second day we headed to Guadalupe National Park again to hike the Guadalupe Peak Trail, the Texas High Point. We had already been to the Texas low Point which is Houston. Started this hike at 0830 or 0930 depending what time zone (Supposed to be Central Time but I believe they go by Mountain Time. On the drive in my car GPS and radio kept flipping back and forth.) This hike starts out at a pretty steady climb and never gives up for the 4.2 miles to the peak. At almost 3000 feet elevation gain I likened it to Mount Wrightson in Tucson but this trail is relentless on the step ups so it is much more challenging. I did this hike a few years back on my own and I guess I had forgotten what a challenge it was or I just got older and more of a weeny (you may see me in the Sponge Bob weeny bar). Great hike with great views especially south over El Capitan. Quite a few hikers on the trail and even a couple of trail runners. Spent about an hour at the peak before heading back down.

One mishap on this trip, just as I reached the peak and heading around the monument my boot hung up on a rock and I took a tumble. I spared hitting my head but my shoulder took the brunt of it, Luckily Ginny is a nurse and checked me over (take two aspirin and call me in the morning). My range of motion was extremely limited and it really only bothered me if I moved my arm. I was able to hike back down with my arm in a sling and limited mobility. I even managed to hike the next day. It wasn’t until I got back to Lubbock and got an X-ray that I discovered I broke some bone in my shoulder. On the bright side I can still carry my pack but on the downside I am in Lubbock now with nowhere to hike.

First adventure of this year's end of year road trip (to Austin this year). A trip across West Texas seemed like the ideal opportunity to check off Texas' high point, and scope out Guadalupe Mountains Ntl Park. Two hour drive from El P, and it was slightly chilly at the start, but I expected it to warm up a bit on the climb... Had to park at the Visitors Center because the place was already packed by 9am. There was a ranger at the main TH asking if I was planning on hiking the summit, and asking if I had enough supplies. Because it almost certainly would've been apparent that I had much less than their recommended water and nutrition (only had 1L of water)...

The first part of the climb was steady but not too bad; I started warming up near the cliffy section, so I took off my shell... Just to round the corner and get hit by a brisk, very cold wind. Pretty sure the temperature dropped about 20 minutes once gaining the main ridge. Passed about a million people on the way up. I was impressed with the vegetation up high; was not expecting fir trees in Texas.

The last push to the summit got a bit steeper. Fun climb overall; I think I can see why they exaggerate the difficulty of this hike so much, because even though it wouldn't be considered a particularly difficult mountain out west, it's probably significantly harder than anything else in Texas.

I only stayed up top for a few minutes because it was getting pretty cold not moving. Jogged some of the downhill, but didn't really hammer it too hard on the way down.

This is definitely a worthwhile hike that is worth going slightly out of your way for.

Day Two of me in Texas. This was the main event. I've been wanting to hit Guadalupe Prak for a while now. I had this trip all planned out last year, but had to cancel because my dog tore her CCL and needed an operation. So I rescheduled for roughly one year from that date, and here I am. The hike up was not as intense as I anticipated, but still quite a climb. The last half mile was pretty steep and kicked my butt. Super cold and windy at the top, so I'm glad I brought my puffy.

In the area for caving so we decided to knock this off. Decent hike, but hot.

Parked at the overflow lot and walked the extra 0.40 miles over to the trailhead. Started fairly early, but there were already a lot of people on the trail, we passed at least thirty other hikers on the way up. Cool, but not too breezy. The sections through the cliffs were neat. Short break at the top, then headed back down. The top half mile or so is kind of slick in places from thousands of shoes polishing the limestone smooth over the years. Once past that, it was simply a matter of dodging dozens of hikers who were still heading uphill. Saw a surprising number of kids on the trail, which makes me think maybe my kids should try this one next year.

Once below the cliffs, we accidentally blew past the stock trail that makes for a shortcut over to Devil's Hall, so we ended up doing that trail in it's entirely both directions. Oh well. The first mile of Devil's Hall is dull, but the second half more than makes up for it. We enjoyed the boulder hop, staircase, and the hall itself. Far less people on that trail.

I am super proud of myself for finishing this trail solo. I was convinced when I left my car that I wouldn't make it to the top, but I did it! For a lower elevation highpoint, this was definitely challenging!

Great hike out of Pine Springs Campground in Guadalupe Mountains National Park to highest Point in Texas. Little too crowded but rewarding to do this hike again. Last time was over 30 years ago. Little harder this time.

This was my first stop of a twenty-seven stop road trip. I was heading to the East Coast to visit some family and/or check out some fall colors. Guadalupe Peak had been on my radar for some time. I usually have my dogs with me, so I'm not allowed to hike this trail. This trip, the pups had to stay home.
I was fortunate enough to get an early start. There where a lot of people heading up the trail as I was heading down. They where struggling. I couldn't imagine hiking up in 95 degree weather. I did hike out to the campsite on the was down. It was about a mile from the summit. I was planning on doing one of the shorter trails at the bottom of the mountain, but I ran out of time. I ended up stopping and talking to a lot of people on the way down. Over all its a great trail. Just becareful, there isn't any shade!

Guadalupe Peak has been on my radar screen for a while, so I decided to go through miles and miles of Texas to bag this peak, which was my 12th state highpointer.

This was a great hike that exceeded my expectations. The trail was great, which made the hike easier than 8.5 miles with 3,000' of elevation gain would suggest.

The weather was great -- it was in the upper 50's when we started and I imagine was in the low 70's when we finished. It was not very windy, although there was a bit of a breeze on the descent.

We started early and did not see many people on the way up or at the summit. We met a few people on our way down, but not too many.

There are some other trails in the area, and I wish that I had more time to check them out. In particular, the off-trail ascent of El Capitan looks like a fun climb!

On my way Back from Texas I decided to try again to hike to Guadalupe Peak in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Last Spring when I was here it was so windy and the air so dusty I opted not to do this hike, today it was overcast but weather wise it was perfect. A slight drizzle on the ascent but not enough to get anything wet. This hike is a steady uphill climb but since the trail is in excellent condition I didn't find it difficult. I liken this hike to Mount Wrightson south of Tucson, Steady uphill about 4 to 5 miles one way and good trail conditions. The views from the trail are spectacular with the major peaks of Hunter, Shumard, Bartlett and Bush to the north and El Capitan to the south. To the west is the Salt Basin with it's Alkali flats and to the east the highway between El Paso and Carlsbad New Mexico. There were more people than I'm use to seeing while hiking in Arizona (with the exception of a few areas) probably about 2 dozen. If you are in the area and have some time to kill I recommend this hike.

Another classic national park summit hike. This is a great one for peak-baggers, and anyone that is a fan of the sky islands in Southern Arizona.

After talking to a few people that backpacked into the wilderness and stayed at the Guadalupe Peak campground, it sounds like that would be a great option as well.

Did this as a sunset hike, starting around 5 PM. Lots of people coming down the trail. Made it to the summit in time for an amazing sunset! We were also graced by the presence of a pair of gray foxes. Hiked down in the dark. A long day considering we had explored Lower Cave in Carlsbad Caverns NP in the morning.

drove out to guadalupe mountains national park monday morning and did this hike in the afternoon.

nice conditions for the hike and not very crowded at the park. i took my time on the ascent, taking in the scenery of these surprisingly rugged mountains. nice little assortment of flowers. before long you are dabbling in some pines with dramatic views down into pine springs canyon, then higher up views west and south (including the awesome El Capitan). had the summit all to myself and spent a good while enjoying the scenery and a snack. leisured my way down in pristine late afternoon conditions then headed off to carlsbad.

excellent day and excellent hike to the texas highpoint

I had a work trip out to Las Cruces and El Paso to try and sell some plants, and then I had to make the long driver over to Hobbs, NM to give a talk on native plants last week. As it happens, my travels took me right by the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, so I had to get in a hike. :D The peak trail was fairly well manicured as to be expected for a National Park. Worst part of the day were the brutal winds, I had a consistent 40-50 mph headwind climbing uphill, and a few gusts to 70+. There was one point where I went around a corner and the wind was so strong that it actually stopped me and made me stagger to regain my balance...a little disconcerting to say the least. I did run into a few guys from Fort Worth (the 'cool' side of Dallas, as they said) who were heading up to the backcountry camp for an overnighter, at least I am not the only crazy one. I wished them well and kept on chugging. The switchbacks over the first mile and a half are pretty strenuous, but it levels out a bit from there. Pretty country, lots of conifers, Sotols, and Yuccas everywhere you look. Views up top are incredible, even if it is of fairly blank desert and salt flats. I must have been able to see for 60 or 70 miles at least, and it was a somewhat hazy day too. Definitely the coolest peak marker I have seen to date too. I signed in up top, took in the sights, and powered my way down the trail. Good stuff!

The set of switchbacks in the beginning felt really difficult, all the while clouds began to fill the canyon between the trail and Hunter Peak. By the time I made it over the ridge to see the stunning views of El Capitan, it had already been covered by the dreadful grey. It was worse at the peak which was entirely socked in. The N/NE cleared up on my way back down, leaving just enough cloud to add dramatic shadows on the mountainsides. Awesome.

On the brighter side, El Cap stood clear and mighty on the drive out.

Decided to head over to Texas as I hadn't been there in 14 years. My last time was in November 1998, when I camped at Dog Canyon, also in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The main goal of the trip was to hike up Guadalupe Peak, the state high point at 8749 feet. I camped at Pine Spring Campground, which was almost full when I arrived Wednesday afternoon. There was a large group of folks from Baylor University on a geology field trip, and they snagged the group areas, as well as some of the single units. But I found one, which is good, since camping is limited in the park. My next option would have been to head for some BLM land in New Mexico south of Whites City, and I was very happy I didn't have to do that! (This is one of the reasons I don't like doing trips to well known destinations on weekends anymore).

I thoroughly enjoyed the hike and had great weather. This is a notoriously windy place, but I figured if I waited until a little later in the spring to attempt this it would be less windy. I also selected a time between storms to better my odds. Worked out perfectly.

It's a steady steep hike to the top on good trail. I made it up in about two and a half hours. Very comfortable on top with light wind for my lunch break. On my way back down I visited with the park superintendent, who was making his way up. He said when he transferred to this job a little over a year ago, he told his staff he was going to hike up the peak once a month. So far so good!
Got pretty warm by the time I finished, but I was coasting downhill so it didn't matter.

After the hike I drove down to a motel in Alpine near the Davis Mountains to continue my little Texas adventure. When I lived in Midland/Odessa for 3 plus years in the late 70s, I enjoyed occasional visits to the Davis Mountains and wanted to see them again. :)

Note: based on a recent discussion on the HAZ forum about photo editing, just for fun, my photoset this time is posted as shot, unedited (except for downsizing).

Hiked to the highest point in Texas on a return trip to Az from Ft Hood, Texas. I took the scenic route back in my daughter's car, who just got deployed to Afghanistan. The Guadalupe Mountains are in north Texas near the New Mexico border. It has been very dry this year in this area, and the flora are showing the effects of the drought. Very windy conditions for the hike. It was hard to stand up on the summit, so I didn't stay long. Nice hike with beautiful scenery. The trail is in good shape and easy to follow.
