Weekend chores finished, I drove north from Oro Valley to check out the ghost town site of Pinal, which I had been reading up on. After a brief visit to Boyce Thompson Arboretum to check out their cactus selection, I was searching for the turnoff to Pinal that my topo had indicated. New road work had destroyed my side road. I drove into the quiet construction zone, parked, hopped a barbed wire fence, and then set out cross-country through the rolling desert. Within a short time, the broken 1880's glass fragments I noticed told me I had reached the edge of Pinal, aka Pinal City, aka Picket Post, Camp Picket Post, etc. Aside from scattered broken glass shards, tiny bits of rusted metal, a couple of old, dry wells, and numerous faint foundations, there isn't much to see at Pinal. The desert and scrap collectors have long since reclaimed this once booming town. Still, I enjoyed my visit, being the Arizona history nerd that I am. I hiked back through the hills to my truck after darkness fell, and drove home through Ray, Hayden, and Mammoth. Next time, Pinal cemetery and the Queen Trail... |
