About 1000 feet below the summit of 5024 sits a prominent, south-facing outcropping that I've heard called the "Nub," at the head of Monument Canyon.

I started out the day with the more modest objectives of scrambling up Monument Canyon to check out the mine shaft and the airplane wreckage. The mine is pretty shallow/short, but worth a quick side jaunt. When I got to the turn up spot for continuing the up-and-over plane wreckage hunt, the canyon drainage looked clear and the Nub began calling my name. I answered.

Unfortunately, the clear drainage section (which would be fun to see when some good water is draining through the cascades) peters out and becomes choked again with various poky desert growth, so I popped out on a flank and followed it very steeply up intermittent talus slopes to the base of the Nub, on some semi-defined bighorn trails.

At the Nub, I did a little scrambling and made it most of the way to the top, but the final pitch would require more exposure than I was willing to risk whiled soloing and without ropes. Great views from that area, including the ability to look far down below and see the glint of the wreckage at the impact site and apex of the two drainages it straddles. Evidence that the bighorns enjoy this view relatively regularly.

Hitting the Nub also brings into view the neighboring Canyon West of Hog with the Ridgeline and 5057 on display.

Just north of the nub are a couple of striking spires (the "monuments" of Monument Canyon?), including a strong contender for the best hoo hoo poker hoodoo in the supes  Truly unmistakable.

Anyhoo, after enjoying the views and a break for some lunch, the real work of descending began. Honestly, if there was a better option for just continuing up and descending on a reasonably near legitimate trail, I definitely would have done it.

I made good use of my poles in sections, combined with some downclimb scrambling and butt-scooting some loose talus sections here and there.

Back in the drainage, I made the turn up on the wreckage path up to the impact site. It is truly amazing how spread out this wreckage is over the divide and the two drainages on either side. FWIW, I marked most of the places where wreckage is located.

Once back to the remains of the miner's cabin (aka the fireplace), I was happy to reconnect with an actual trail. Though I think that trail from the Broadway trailhead is one of the rockiest in the
Supes. The beautiful saguaro forest in this area though, along with the nice, broadside view of the ridgeline makes up for it.

Lots of bushwhacking on this route, and the bushes definitely whack back--so don't wear your favorite hiking clothes.

I got an early start today. Avoided the sun for 2.5 miles. The beginning section of this hike has stinknet everywhere! The half mile before the cave has some nice brittlebush. Morning temps were still good. Didn’t necessarily want to get up this early but it was nice once I got out there. Done by 7:30 so I beat the heat for today! 😁👍

Got out early and hit up Broadway Cave with the Turtle. It was a little dark at the start but still doable without a headlamp. Early morning temperature was ok but a little humid. We got practice hiking a rocky trail. We made it up to Broadway Cave but Denny forgot the tickets so we didn't stay for the show. The back was easier. I tried some new inserts and the feet felt good. Thought I had a bruised heel that wasn't healing but turns out I just needed arch support on the left foot. ](*,) Now I can increase the miles once it cools down. Thanks for the hike Denny.

Wally and I hit the trail around 5:20. There was already a van and car in the limited parking. Took it a little easy until our eyes adjusted or it got lighter out. Whichever happen first. Temps were not too bad but it was a little muggy. First mile went good albeit as rocky as ever. Second mile was a sweat fest and wore me down. Cave was clean with a little noise coming from the Bat crack?? We got our second wind and heading back down. Had shade/cloud cover for another mile. Then just another rocky mile to the car. We saw quail here and there and one other hiker in the last mile before the car. The van was gone when we got back but there was a Sherriff truck parked beside and behind the same car that was there. We asked if they were doing a search and rescue and they said they were trying to figure that out. Not sure what info they had. We told them where we went and the one hiker we saw. They asked if he looked fit and ok. Which he did as he was just starting. They thanked us for starting early and not at 2pm or something. Made us wonder if that car was there from yesterday. Hope all turns out well!! Thanks for the hike Wally!! Like HAZ, you rock!!

Desert reacquaintance hike after our great trip to Japan and the first one-off hike of the day with more of a trail than I expected. Still just Meh! :| I seriously doubt I'd ever hike to the cave again. It did have a good profile view of The Cobra though.

Nice day, nice hike. Trail is super easy until it isn't anymore (the grade gets steep in a hurry on the final approach.)

The cave is cool minus the graffiti (seriously-- I know it is not an overly long or strenuous trail but what kind of person throws a can of spray paint in their pack for a hike like this?) I had my headlamps and briefly considered trying to squueze through the small opening at the back but decided it was not worth the risk of getting stuck.

The recent rains had all the shrubs and brush in full growth mode so I suspect the trail was quite a bit thinner than during the more arid months. I somehow lost the trail not long into the descent and ended up just marching through the brush most of the way down. Glad I decided against wearing shorts or my legs would have picked up quite a few desert pinstripes.

A quick afternoon hike with 00Blackout (aka Jason).

We hiked up the easy part of the hike and decided to go visit Monument Canyon before we started climbing up to the cave. Anyone know the history of the cabin that used to be in there? It's looks modern - 1950's, perhaps?

After that quick visit, we started back down to the cave trail and made it up. Such nice views from the cave. The western horizon is all there. The sun was moving in and out of the clouds. For a while, it looked like we might get a nice sunset, but as soon as it appeared and looked good, it disappeared behind the low clouds on the horizon. No color show at all.

It's always nice to hike this one. Getting in quick hikes during the week is also nice. This is the time do these in Superstitions (and Goldfields). It won't be long until the Arizona Toaster Oven starts up and makes sunset hikes like this a little warmer than yesterday.

Thanks for the invite, Jason!

This was a hike to Broadway Cave via Lost Dutchman State Park. The lot on Broadway is really small and the hike from there is too short for me, so I just decided to hike it from LDSP. That's a shorter drive from my house, also.

Started before dawn and hiked the first mile or so with a headlamp. Looks like the Siphon Draw Trail through the park was rerouted in one section due to added camping facilities (or maybe cabins). That got me turned around a bit in the dark, but I got it figured out pretty quickly. On the way up to the cave I noticed a junction for a trail that heads over into Monument Canyon, might be worth another trip to explore.

Saw a few hikers on the way up to the cave on my way down. Once I got back on the Siphon Draw Trail the traffic was pretty busy.

Last minute invite from Denny to get this short one in that I'd never done before.

Rocky Trail on the way up. We passed all that were in the TH Parking and had the cave to ourselves for 10 minutes. Interesting cave. The views with the morning light was pretty special.
Glad I did it.

Thanks for the invite Denny. Like HAZ you... well you know.

Coyote serenade at the trailhead. This trail is rocky. Lots of cottontail and quail out today. Nice moon. All the vegetation looked pretty green! No flowers in the first mile or so. Once you start climbing, there is a nice splash of brittle bush blooming. The mountain blocked the sunrise from my vantage point. A guy sleeping in the cave said he saw a rattlesnake on the way up yesterday about 2:30. He also said he had to move his sleeping bag last night as the bats were relieving themselves on it. He said the swooshing of the bats flying in and out made it hard to sleep. It was nice to get a hike in this morning!

Hike w/ kiddos and grandpa. Started at 6am, not quite early enough to avoid the sun on the hike up. It's been a few years since I was on this route, was glad to see that the trails are just as rocky and annoying. Kids struggled w/ the humidity. Made it to the cave and they magically had infinite energy and we explored and snacked and talked. Return trip was pretty easy, only one bloody knee to bandage up. Returned to grandparent's house for an hour of swimming before the morning storms hit AJ. Great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Been looking up at that hole for a GREAT many more decades that I care to admit, but have never visited. Thought it was finally time and I'm glad I did. Someone mentioned that sunset was best so I took their advice...

I've got some friends in town from Colorado that came down specifically to find out what the Superstitions are all about. I can only do hikes near town and close to wifi, so I am planning on giving them the Best of the Western Supes. They have their dogs with them as well so I need to find appropriate trails for that.

First up, Broadway Cave. They arrived in the afternoon, so I thought a nice little sunset hike will be a good into.

The trail up is the same as always. The weather was really nice and the air was clear. The sunset did not provide any fireworks and faded quickly. But, I love seeing the sun go down (or up) whilst I am in the desert.

Next up over the next 3 days - Peralta/Cave, Boulder Canyon, Treasure Loop/Praying Hands. I will sneak in a trip into the Goldfields somewhere in there too.

I have not been up to the cave in quite a while. I wanted a nice little workout with a nice view of the sunset. This fit the bill perfectly. Still a little toasty out there for November. Looks like the weather will get nicer soon.

There was an empty parking area when I pulled in. The trail is the same as always. Nice and flat and rocky until you get to the base of the mountain. Then, it turns nice and steep and rocky. A couple of other hikers made it up to the cave as well after I had arrived.

The cave is the same as always. I was hearing way more bats that previous visits and there was a slight guano aroma permeating the cave as well. The clouds looks hopeful for a nice sunset. Mother Nature abided and I was treated to a wonderful sunset. Gotta love these AZ sunsets.

The hike down was dark and uneventful. I have seen rattlers on this hike before, but none today. Not many critters at all, actually. Except of course, the bats that started taking off in small waves at dusk.
