Day 4 of planned 7 in Death Valley

Mosaic Canyon
4.4 Miles
1478 AEG

This is one of the more popular hikes in Death Valley. Make sure to hit it early and on a weekday if possible. The first 1/2 mile of the hike is the crown jewel. Geology you won't see anywhere else with the mosaic tile-like walls. We went to the end but sections after the first .5 mile could be strenuous to newbies. There is one detour because of a 30 dry-fall.

Fall Canyon and Titus Canyon
10.3 Miles
1798 AEG

Fall Canyon
This hike has very interesting geology and goes three and a half miles until you get to a 20-foot dead. We attempted to get around it but the rock was kinda crappy to climb on. We were supposed to have the chance of seeing Big Horn Sheep, but we saw none. Otherwise a very interesting hike.

Titus Canyon
Titus Canyon is a one-way road that weaves its way through the canyon with tall vertical walls. As of the date we hiked it, the road is currently closed to motor traffic. We did about a mile and a half of it just to check it out and then turned around. Because of the grade there were more people doing this hike from the trailhead.

After the hike we went back into Stovepipe Wells for an early dinner at the restaurant. We had bailed on a hike earlier, up in the mountains because of snow depth and the forecasted 55 mph winds that were supposed to hit at 1pm. They never hit. At dinner we caught the current forecast that called for steady 50 mph winds with gusts 75-80 mph. It looked ominous over the mountain range to the west. At 7pm, while John and I were visiting with a neighbor, the schmidt hit the fan.

We bailed for our tents. Mine was 50 feet away and I could not see it through the blowing sand. For the first hour I sat up in my tent, trying to keep the walls intact. After that I laid down, concerned something might blow through the tent. Winds gusted 75-80 and the sand piled up to 3" deep in my tent getting in around the rain fly.

3.5 hours in to a 5 hour storm, after it calmed down enough, I bailed on my now collapsed tent with the tattered and ripped rain fly. Out at Johns car, I learned that they rode out the storm in his car, spending only 5-10 minutes in their tents.

Day four of our Death Valley tour.
Mosaic Canyon is very near the campground we stayed at in Stovepipe Wells. The hike is very interesting with unique geology.
We hiked Fall and Titus canyons together from the same trailhead. Lots of huge rock walls line both canyons. Started up a bypass at the end of Fall Canyon, but we saved that for another day.
Got back to camp in time to eat dinner at the local restaurant and get back to camp a little before a crazy sandstorm hit. It lasted for several hours. We ended up all trying to sleep in the car, as the wind didn't subside until morning. Tents were trashed.
Good hikes, unforgettable night. :)

our first hike today was mosaic canyon, which was right across the road from the campground
just a couple of cars in the parking lot and we had the entire canyon to ourselves for quite awhile
there is a beautiful section of narrows in the first quarter mile with polished marble walls
the canyon continues and about halfway there is a bypass around a dryfall
a little bit of scrambling, then another dryfall at the official end of the hike
john found a bypass for that, but we had another hike to do so we didn't try it
we did explore a side canyon that had some climbing
headed back and started seeing more people
this is a popular hike for good reason
my favorite of the trip

we had originally wanted to hike wildrose peak today, but much of the trail was snow covered and the weather forecast wasn't good
plan b: we drove up the open segment of titus canyon road and set out on fall canyon trail
entered the canyon after about a mile, which featured high limestone and dolomite walls
interesting geology
eventually came to a dryfall
we did find the bypass that allowed further exploration, and john climbed up a ways to check it out
supposedly a nice section of narrows beyond the dryfall
retraced our steps and then went up the mile and a half section of titus canyon narrows
nice to do it without traffic as this part of the road is closed
darker rock and high canyon walls, narrower than fall canyon

had cheeseburgers at the stovepipe wells restaurant, then back to camp
as the boys mentioned, just after dark a wind/sandstorm blew in and continued for hours
forecast was sustained 40 to 50 with 75 mph gusts, and i can believe it was that intense
bruce tried to hold out in his tent, but he joined us in john's car when the tent collapsed
my tent held up but was full of sand and john was fortunate that his tent didn't blow away
crazy night - a first for all of us

Drove from Emigrant Campground to Beatty, NV for fuel and a good breakfast at Mel's. I aimed to get through Titus and over to Mesquite Springs Campground before the rain started. This drive is awesome. The Amargosa Mountains are beautiful.
Leadfield was interesting enough for a brief stop. Also stopped to check out the petroglyph site. The boulder was scratched to hell so some of the authentic glyphs were hard to identify. A shame but I'm not at all surprised.

I arrived at Mesquite Spring, got the tent set up, and it started to come down just as I threw on the rain cover. I had a good chuckle at the timing before hunkering down for the next few hours. The storm broke early in the evening, creating a gorgeous sunset.

Drove Titus canyon road. Cool around the pass, some trickling water at the spring, and an interesting slot canyon drive out below that Jazz Baby. Yes, the mine. A mild 108 by the canyon exit.

Tough but fun. The road was in excellent condition, and we were able to coast down in style faster than the vehicles after getting passed by everyone on the way up.
Stopped at Leadfield for a nice picnic lunch and some exploration.
Much to our surprise, we saw one other cyclist. He was riding out and back - a very long day!

Hiked up Titus Canyon to Klare Spring, where we ate and checked out the petroglyphs. The highlight of the hike was definitely the narrows. Titus narrows are impressively narrow, considering there is a road through here, but not as colorful as the Fall Canyon narrows we hiked yesterday.
The remainder of the hike up to the spring was nice since we never had to watch our feet and could make good time. However, I couldn't help but feel we were hiking up a road to get to a hike, instead of actually being on a hike.

At Klare Spring we inspected the much-defaced petroglyphs. They were not pecked into desert varnish, as we are used to seeing them, but into grey rock that was inherently lighter beneath the surface. My husband and I both agreed that we are spoiled by our easy access to large galleries of very intact petroglyphs and pictographs. Seeing all the graffiti here was a serious downer for the day. :(

The return hike took maybe half as long as the hike up had, since it was all down-hill. There were some very interesting up-canyon winds throughout the day, alternating between cold and hot with each left or right turn, especially through the narrows.

Next trip here, we plan to bring our mountain bikes and bike down the one-way Titus Canyon Rd. That will allow an opportunity to explore Titanothere Canyon and the abandoned mining town of Leadfield, more flexibility to pull over and check things out than in a vehicle, and a day of fun.

Between quart and gallon per min. Based on the surrounding soil, the water appears heavily mineralized.
