It was late in a very dry season and there was no running stream. The pools were still there but just barely. Tiny frogs were the main attraction at the pools. The non-hikers in our group enjoyed it.

My track shows that we didn't get very far up the very beautiful canyon, but it was not our intent to complete the loop described in the official description. This and another short hike were subsitutes for being unable to reach Lava Point (which was snowed in dudring our visit) to do the West Rim. Just as it was getting interesting, in terms of some mild rock scrambling, most of the group opted to turn around. This was another hike included in our hiking club outing to St. George, Utah in April. There are some interesting chipped out foot holds and mild exposure points protected by ropes (use these at your risk), which make this a nice spot for novice rock scramblers to test their skills and have fun. There is parking at the trailhead, which is at the north end of the Red Reef CG. There is a day use fee, which is covered by the federal lands Senior pass. Very impressive canyon with a small stream, but could be busy on weekends causing bottlenecks at the scrambling spots. We had it to ourselves in April. Easy access off I-15.

This was a pretty fun hike, except the hordes of kids at the beginning were a bit much. Seems it was spring break for the schools in the area. After passing the pools and screaming children, though, we saw not a soul for the rest of the day. Hiking through the pools and slot canyon was relaxing and fun. The sound of the water and all the lovely shade from the trees, both things we rarely experience here.
Luckily we happened upon a group of three coming down the way we planned to go up, or we might never have found the side canyon to cut over. The up-climbs were classic slickrock fun - chimney and stemming skills a big plus. Not many footprints and plenty of route finding across slickrock to test my husband. Honestly, much of the end of this hike was somewhat boring, slogging along the sandy bottom of a wash, then switching into a wash with ankle-breaker-sized rocks - I wouldn't bother to hike that part again. It all felt worth it when I spotted an owl on a ledge, though :D
We finished off the loop by hiking along the Prospector bike trail (an old prospector's road) back to the road, then down the road to our vehicle.
